Possibly one of my favourite players to ever pull on a North guernsey, but my memories of him at Freo are relatively hazy. I didn't see too much of him during his time at the Dockers and was amazed by the raw talent of the man when he came to us in 1998.

Obviously his mark of the year and premiership in 1999 are the career stand-outs.

What are your memories of Winnie at Freo?

Was it a game against Melbourne at the WACA where he kicked a bag of 4 or 5, including one of the marks of the year in the goalsquare and one of the goals of the year where he somehow gathered the ball around his back like a basketball trick and then kicked a goal from 50 on the run? I remember watching it in my boarding house at school.

That was the best game he ever played for us (though my memory might be lumping those two highlights together when they were actually from separate games).

He was one of my favourites players along with Scotty Chisholm back then.

Yep
I was at that game.

In one play he hit a bouncing ball coming into the forward line.
The ball spilled over his back, he grabbed it on his back on the way down, still at full tilt, wheeled around on the fifty, brought the ball around from his back while turning and slotted the goal.
RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME

Still the best thing I've seen on footy field.

Kid was a freak

He was watching training the other day.

I remember against Footscray in Melbourne at Princes Park in the mud and torrential rain where he kicked a goal from about 55 m on the run into the wind in the dying seconds of the game to win it. Was watching the game with a diehard dogs supporter who was just shattered couldn't believe someone could do that given the mud and waterlogged ball. Checking back it was R1 1997 and we won 80 to 76, was Winnies only goal for the game but it was the one that counted and was important because it was about our first win in Victoria in wet conditions (or at all).

That Melbourne game above was at the WACA Rd5 1996.

6 against Sydney at the WACA in rd 6 95, Johnny Hutton kicked 8, but my recollection is Sandy Roberts commentating "oh I love watching Winston" when he slammed one home on the run after selling some candy.

Incredibly lazy player in the true sense of the word. Unbelievable.

When he went to the Roos, Pagan assigned him a minder who had the keys to his gaff and who would go around at 6 am to kick him out of bed and take him to training.

But on the field?

Lordy, that hang he took seared itself upon my retina so thoroughly each time I close my eyes in orgasm I see Winnie floating above the pack and turning while he was up there.

I can't remember when, but there was a mark that Winston took for us that was so improbable that the Umpire didn't pay it. There was a pack between the point and goal posts, and Winston soared above them and grabbed the ball while horizontal above the pack. He was the first to touch the ball, and came down with the ball, so it should have been a mark. But there is no way a human being should have been that high and lying down on top of four people, so the umpire called play on. It should have been mark of the year.
I've forgotten who we were playing, and I can't remember if I was watching from the outer at Subiaco or the WACA, but I can picture that unpaid mark.

I've heard from someone that despite the greater success he had at his second club, he sees himself more as a Freo person. Hope that's true.

That was the mark at the WACA vs Melb I think where he kicked 4 goals also. It was paid as a mark and he kicked a goal. I was at that game. He kicked a few awesome goals. Farmer played also and kicked a few goals. I remember Farmer running from the half back line, sprinting down the wing and getting on the end of two passages in the goal square for goals.

You can see the mark at about the 13 sec mark in this vid.

Thanks for the highlights. But I don't think so. More players involved and closer to the boundary. And higher. And not paid, so not technically a highlight.

I hope this isn't a memorial thread.

I remember when he was horsing around at home with some mates, fell over one of them and broke his leg.

Awesome talent on the football field.

Wasn't it both legs? He was sitting on a chair and his mate jumped on his legs is how I remember it.
Eye witnesses are always the most reliable source so I'll take your word for it.

I don't remember it being both legs, but it could have been.

One of the biggest mistakes giving him away...look at the way he moves

Yep, one of the more balanced players I can recall. Good times. I love those highlights, it made me love watching footy, the players with a Bond license to thrill. Geez, they had freedom and they lit the crowds up as we crammed in amongst the drums at the WACCA. Tough, but enjoyable times. You never quite knew what was going to happen.

I was happy for him to win a flag with North.

Winnie was known as "The WACA Specialist" as he would perform on that ground everytime he played there.
