Evening punters,

Myself and a mate are about to move into an apartment in the city and just looking for some advice re: internet sticks.

We have signed a six month lease and that's probably how long we will stay there, just we are both looking for the 'city experience' and to live in the big smoke for half a year.

Anyway, can anyone provide me with some information on the best value for money internet usb sticks for laptops, internet wise?

We are contemplating signing with Optus ($90 a month + $150 installation fee) but NO CONTRACT but also the idea of these internet sticks is also appealing, on a prepaid deal, as obviously there's no installation fee/not as expensive.

I've seen plenty more of these about on the train and so forth, what provides the best value for money/cheapest stick??

I use the internet a fair bit at work, so about an hour a day max is what I'd use when at home (bar days off when it's a bit more I suppose). All I use it for is Facebook, email, watch the odd youtube video, look at news websites etc. So I don't really download heaps of music etc?

Can anyone suggest the best value for money prepaid stick/package to pay for (prepaid obviously).

Be happy to spend around $30-40 a month, interested to know what that gets me. Any advice appreciated - let me know if the Optus package is better too, because that'd be $45 a month split with a housemate and probably a bit more usage.

Any advice/companies to go with appreciated.

Cheers,

In at least one part of the developing world apartments and hotels will often have WiFi available to residents. It's fast, accessable, wireless and works. We need to wait for all those billions to be spent giving us super lightning fast internet for every man woman and child.

Go with Virgin Broadband, its what I use...
Telstra have released there new thing, but i'm doubtful of it.

Virgin Broadband use the Optus line but is cheaper...

Quick enough, I pay $39 for 6gb...
I've used them all and all of them are pretty much the same but Virgin has the 3.5G HSDPA which gets up to 220kb/s. ;)

Seperate question for anybody who knows.

What is the lifespan of a wireless modem? Im with Optus and was happy with the service till a couple a months ago and it turned to junk, constantly drops out and cant get any signal, i have to unplug it and and put it back and reconnect to work again. Ive noticed it gets a bit warm so im now using a cable to keep it away from the computer but its not helping.

That was my experience too, but right from the start, though reception where I am isn't the greatest with Optus. I gave up on it eventually and went with a wired connection.

More than likely to be a rubbish signal rather than modem problem. Even clouds will mess with it.
