heya guys,
having a problem with connecting to the internet in the new place i am in. the wireless router in the laptop is working because i can connect to the internet at my parents house and am currently at a mates house and connected fine.
i'm pretty sure the problem is that under wireless network connection properties, when i click on the properties for TCP/IPv6 and TCP/IPv4 both have listed as "obtain IP address automatically" but it doesn't seem to be picking up any IP address
another problem is don't have access to the router constantly because we are living out of a hotel so only when the hotel owner is in his office could i get onto his computer and have a look to see what the IP settings are on the router.
what would i be looking for?? i don't know what router he is using so i don't know what the software would be like but in general does anyone know where the setting would be.
i am connecting to the router fine, but the connection is listed as "local only" and will not go onto the internet.
these were the settings when the computer could not connect to the internet from my flat:
i'm running xp vista
wireless network properties
name; netgear01
ssid; netgear01
network type; access point
network availibility; all users
security type; no authentication (open)
encryption type; wep
key index: 1
have tried with different security types - shared, wpa2-person, wpa-person, wpa2-enterprise, wpa-enterprise, 802.1x
network connectoin status
ipv4 connectivty: limited
ipv6 connectivity; limited
media state; enabled
ssid; netgear
speed: 54.0 mbps
signal quality is strong
it's sending packets but not recieving any
connection details
connection-specific dns suffix: none
descprtion: intel(r) pro/wireless
physical address: 00-1f-3c-35-c4-5f
dhcp enabled; yes
autoconfiguration ipv4 address: 169.254.195.65
ipv4 subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
ipv4 default gateway; none
ipv4 dns server; none
ipv4 wins server: none
netbios over Tcpip enabled: yes
link-local ipv6 address: fe80::ed44:65e9:5fe5:c33e%9
ipv6 default gateway; none
ipv6 dns severs; fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
when i open windows ip configuration from the command line everything is as is above plus there is also this additional setting:
tunnel adapter local area connection* 6:
link-local ipv6 address: fe80:5efe:169.254.195.62%13
i came up to my mates house and after using vista's automatic repair it connecting eventually although it did take 10-15 minutes or so and about 4 attempts.
at his house it is also automatically obtaining an ip address manually using the ipv4 protocol. this time in the details screen there is an ip address and a default gateway but there is still nothing using the ipv6 protocol. i have recorded the ip address that are obtained automatically and will try loading them manually when i get back home, but i'm pretty sure these are exclusive the modem and not the computer.
hopefully ill be making another post in half an hour
any ideas let me know, should be back on the net tomorrow to try.
cheers
