On the plus side I get this whole week off work but some of the stories I have heard have me a bit worried.

I have them out on Tuesday.

Is it really as bad as some people are saying?

I have had about 4 wisdom teeth come through, and never had them removed. They didn't cause me any problems, i just have more teeth now. Maybe I was lucky, I don't know, but what I do know is that some dentists are full of sh¡t. Some are quite willing to do unnecesary work in order to beef up the bill. I am talking from experience. If you aren't in any great pain, and they are coming out fairly straight, get a second opinion.

Haven't had mine out, should get them out soon.

Heard from a friend that they had trouble getting his out, and when they were yanking the tooth, they crunched the tooth into 2 pieces. They then had to cut some of his gums off to get the fragmented pieces out. Youch! All I can offer as advice is get ready for some swelling and pain.

Don't your wisdom teeth push your adjacent molars out of position?

They can.

Mine didn't do too much damage there, they did however give my face a 'broader' appearance, as it used to be quite defined, especially around the cheekbone area. I never realised what what causing it until I had the first one out a couple of months ago and suddenly my face looked uneven in the mirror!!!

I have 3 more to come out, none of them are all the way through like the first one was, but they are through enough that I can have them done at the dentist surgery rather than a hospital stay.

As for the pain, I suppose it is relative. I have never even had a filling, so having my tooth ripped out unexpectedly caused major discomfort for 4 or 5 days, but then again, it has nothing on the pain and after affects of childbirth.

Yes it's all true! I had 'em all out at once under a general anaesthetic, my face swelled up for at least two or three days, took really strong painkillers, only had soup, icecream, and liquids for a week.

If they are pushing through crooked they take them out before they come through which is what happened to me.

Just think of it as character building. :)

It is actually a scam i can confirm this from my own experience and others. The wisdom teeth only hurt for a month or two then u never notice them again. $2000 operation, i don't think so!

Depends on the individual Spidey - mine never hurt. What did happen one morning was it began to crumble, it had been compressed in the jaw for way too long and just gave way - it had to come out.

And the $$ amounts vary - mine was only $220 for the one, including xrays etc, and I expect to pay around the same for the remaining 3. Had I had to go to hospital to have them removed, it would have been a good $2000+.

I haven't had mine out either.

I've had two wisdom teeth hassles and they both rate as two of most painful experiences in my entire life.

Painful, yes. And I had all four of mine pulled in one sitting about 12 years ago. Now that's painful, even with the anaesthetic...

Ah. memories of warm salt water and soft food for dinner...

Me, well i didn't take any days off, either the guy who took mine out must be damn good or i am just unlucky. Anyway, the one thing that happened to me post-surgery was that my gums bled a little bit from surgery so i had to dab them with a paper towell for a few minutes, so that was ok. Other than that there wasn't anything to really worry about. I got mine done before there was really any pain, as the tooth guy said to do it before they pushed into some nerve that would cause the pain.

An important fact to remember is that if possible, make sure you get it done while your parents are paying for it!! ;) I found out it is the general anasthetic that costs the most.

Ever so slightly. Makes no difference to my life. Certainly doesn't warrant some apprentice dentist trying to rip them out with a pair with pliers.

Didn't have any choice with mine.

I was in Uni at the time, and I had to concentrate on some homework for about three different courses for midterm exams and lectures for the next few days thereafter-- and believe me, it was extremely difficult to concentrate.

And on top of that, I remember being in one of my journalism courses on campus that week, I think, and we were in a production meeting for the school paper. I had to make a point, and had to take the cotton out of my mouth to do so. The stinging was uncomfortable, to put it lightly, and I let out a bit of an expression as I was speaking in the meeting, and everyone else there, including our faculty supervisor, had a good laugh about it.

Had all of them out at age 16.
It really depends on the individual as to how they cope.
I didn't experience any pain to the extent that I was uncomfortable, my cheeks were back to normal in two days and I was eating full meals within three days.
Mind you, brushing your teeth with stitches in your mouth is a hell of a bitch.

Saying that, I've had friends who have spent a week + in bed, in pain, with swollen cheeks for over a week, so it changes person to person how painful/inconvenient it is.

I've had two ripped out. Didn't really effect me that much. Lots of bleeding and ****. Dosen't help when you try to eat a steak 2 days after the operation though.

I only had 3 wisdom teeth, & they were all removed under general anaesthetic. One had grown through, but there wasn't really much room for it, & the other 2 were impactng on the tooth next door. I had to take lots of pain killers for the next few weeks & could only eat muchy food for a while......was a horrible experience! :(

Oh yeah, & how could I forget all the blood I coughed up in the recovery room! Think I must have swallowed quite a bit during the precedure. Took a while for the bleeding to stop too. WHen I got home I went to bed straight away & when I woke up there blood all over my pillow.

I've got two on the bottom fully impacted told years ago to get em out but can't due to a neck prob and i can't open my mouth for long periods which is what they would have to do to get em out.
If they are impacted should they come out?? I'm starting to worry.I've had no pain(touch wood).

I had to have two impacted wisdom teeth out a couple of years ago. I had the procedure done in hospital under a general aneasthetic and all I can remember is the pain and blood afterwards. It really isn't a very pleasant experience.
