THE wooing of Australia’s top netballers for the new national league’s expansion teams has started with star goal shooter Caitlin Bassett spotted at Collingwood yesterday.

Bassett was seen casting an eye over Magpies’ training and chatting with officials, including Graeme Allan, in the club’s cafe.

The 193cm West Coast Fever and Diamonds’ starting goaler would be a marquee signing for the Magpies if they could entice her from her home in the west.

The Magpies are one of three new expansion teams set to join the revamped league, which starts next February, along with Melbourne Storm and a Netball New South Wales/GWS alliance.

Bassett’s manager Mel Jones said yesterday the goaler has been in Melbourne for management group meetings and had been at Collingwood to use its indoor court for Diamonds’ training.

“She was over for management meetings anyway ... we try and catch up with all the girls post season,’’ Jones said.

“Diamonds’ training started on Monday and (Diamonds’ coach) Lisa Alexander knew that ‘C-Bass’ was coming over, so we actually trained at Collingwood on their indoor court.

“In amongst all that, there is people there with netball so we just had a coffee.’’

Jones said Bassett was a “Perth girl”, but there was plenty to like on the east coast.

“I think for C-Bass, as well for anyone in Perth, there is always an attraction to playing on the east coast because it’s something new and different,’’ Jones said.

“A lot of the discussions we’ve had is I don’t think she’d survive the winter, but certainly there is a lot of things that are very attractive over here, but in saying that she’s a Perth girl.’’

The contracting period for the new and existing teams does not start until after the trans-Tasman grand final on August 1.

Bassett was Australia’s leading goal scorer in the trans-Tasman league this season, finishing third in the standings behind Jamaican imports Jhaniele Fowler-Reid and Romelda Aiken.

The Diamonds’ star has played all of her games in the trans-Tasman league with the West Coast Fever, who failed to make the Australian conference finals this season.

It was just said on Offsiders we're announcing the netball team's coach tomorrow

Yep, they made the appointment a little while ago and have been keeping it under wraps

I feel like the club are trying to go down the path of having teams in multiple sports like Barcelona, Real Madrid. I reckon we will see more Collingwood teams in different sporting codes in the near future. Maybe Basketball or something similar. Sports that don't have a lot of money in them but can build the Collingwood brand in a whole.

Sure looks like it.

I could see us trying to get into the NBL for Basketball and even A-League/W-League for Soccer.

Not totally convinced Netball belongs with football clubs. (I do love netball and played for many years).
I can understand women's football but...

Why Not? Football and Netbsll clubs been connected for Years. Especially at Local Level

Tend to agree. We are a footy club. Womens football obviously has a place, but not necessarily other sports.

I can understand at community level as gets the people involved with partners and families, more of a shared social experience.

Would the Netball Department totally Separate from the Footy Department?

I don't 't know if anyone is particularly interested but here is an article with lots of new information.

High-profile Diamonds defender Sharni Layton is certain to return from Sydney to her home state as one of a handful of national team members lured by Collingwood under what seems certain to be a groaning salary cap. Another former Vixen and current Diamond, Bendigo-raised Caitlin Thwaites, looks set to join Layton at the Holden Centre, robbing the Swifts of their influential bookends.

I'm glad we seem to be making a proper effort at making it successful. I don't know how tight the salary cap is going to be but I think we'll be pushing it to its limits. Having big names is a must to get non-Collingwood supporters interested in the team.
