Sounds interesting!... i think is a great idea, anyone done it ?

Places you'll visit on the tour:-
  • the suburbs of Collingwood & Abbotsford
  • Victoria Park;
  • John Wren’s tote (incl. the secret entrances & exits);
  • the pub that players first used as changerooms;
  • John Wren’s, Lou Richards’ & Doc Seddon’s street;
  • the gravesite of the dreaded “Colliwobbles”;
  • the demolished site of where many of the foundation players went to school;
  • the impressive Collingwood Town Hall;
  • the pub where the Collingwood Football Club was formed (& it wasn’t the Grace Darling Hotel!);
  • the original Sherrin factory – *depending on fitness levels of participants.
  • other historical (famous & infamous) Melbourne/Collingwood/Abbotsford locations.

I had seen this pop up before it sounded interesting, next time I go to Melbourne and I have some time I am going to have to do it. I got to go to Victoria Park, and Westpac Centre when I was in Melbourne a couple of years back. I'm hoping to get back and take a few more decent photos there, and do a bit more exploring as I was with someone who took me there.

Added to bucket list :thumbsu:

$50 for a walking tour doesn't sound that much value for money, although I am comparing that to free European city ones where you'll tip the guide 5 or 10 euros at the end.

Compared to a ticket to a Billy Ray Cyrus concert, it's extremely good value for money :)

(LOL at the Texan boot scoot'n)

Great idea, ridiculous price.

This is something I would love to do. Take my Dad (insanely one-eyed with over 65 years of devotion to the Club) down to Melbourne, go to training, do the walking tour, watch the VFL, watch the seniors at the MCG. Celebrate the win (obviously) with a beverage... What could be better?

But I'm not paying 2x$50 to do a walking tour. That's poor value for money. I've done walking tours in NYC where we got to eat at about a dozen different places, meet some locals, hear a ton of history, see some hidden gems like secret gardens behind shopfronts... all in the heart of Manhattan and all for about $20 each and a healthy tip for a job well done.

$50 is a price point that will be perfectly reasonable for those with disposable income but will exclude supporters on a bit of a budget for whatever reason. I am cynical enough not to be surprised, but it is still a little disappointing.

I think it depends on your guide,...... funny, entertaining, informative then you feel like you have your moneys worth, perhaps the kickbacks are bigger for him from local shops, eateries, pubs in New York for him than this tour in Melbourne.

Plenty of pubs around Collingwood have closed down, so the kickbacks probably aren't as big for this bloke and i will disclose i have nothing to do with this, don't know the bloke and haven't been on the tour.

Personally i think it is something the club should attempt to run in conjunction with interstate, country and even more recent Melbourne members who are not aware of the history, just cant see a downside.

Great suburb to walk around in IMO, i think from reading some history, there are still some some original wooden poles on a street that were used to tie up horses.

Just go to the Yarra Falls hotel and spend your $50 on five pints of Bastard Son. You won't be disappointed.

Schooners of Collingwood draught at the Yorkshire stingo were not to bad, i think i had 6 - yes that is correct - schooners - love em - prefer them to pints any day.

  • Do a tour of Victoria Park and surrounds $50
  • Watch training and have a pint at Holdens garage centre $10
  • Thinking of Collingwood, priceless

How many people go on the tours and how long do they go for?

Like many things in Australia, including $10 pints, so many simple elements of life seem so expensive. To me a $50 tour fee would mar my enjoyment of any Collingwood memorabilia or attractions. Surely the club could have regular free tours for supporters? Why does everything have to be a money making opportunity?

Tradition is something that should be nurtured and fostered, even flaunted and fussed over, not sold like some commodity for an outrageous $50 fee, for as Kappa summed it up - 'a walk to a pub, a demolished site, a town hall, a street and a suburb'.

There is nothing wrong with a bloke making some money out of something he obviously loves and knows a fair bit about, however i sort of agree about the price, what he should entail to do is incorporate a meal or drinks etc, perhaps a momento etc into the price, probably wouldn't be that much out of pocket after a few kick backs from local businesses.

It is possible something the club should run using perhaps older retired blokes who grew up in the area, knows it history etc, there is definitely a market for it, hope Ed is reading.

A good way to run it would be using a mini bus with groups of 20 building up towards a saturday night game at the MCG, from saturday arvo on a bit of a history tour and then a meal somewhere in Collingwood then off to the G.

The problem with Collingwood Draught is that it tastes like shit.

Trust me, as a resident of Collingwood it isn't exactly the nicest place to tour either.

"Come see the junkies on Hoddle St, get your car washed by them to fuel their ice addiction, take a nice walk through the car dealerships, and then afterwards head down to Smith St for some 'alternative' hipster culture. Keen for some artwork? Check out the construction site on Gipps St. Collingwood has it all. Fun for the whole family!"

Haha nah but serious $50 for something that people can do for free. What the?!

If you have no idea of the suburb or landmarks, you end up walking around in circles, Collingwood is not that bad, i have told you not to exaggerate at least a million times!

Collingwood was never nice, but it had a pretty good football team in a suburb that was considered one of the poorest in the city, i think people understand that.

Just love how after a VFL game which is byo and free you can bring ya dog into most pubs in collingwood....shit i even had mine in the tote last time.....compare this to whitten oval where ylu cant bring your dog in!!!! Seriously is tbis the only football ground in melbourne that has such a ridiculous rule!!??

Tour sounds good to me. I know some of the sites already, some are obvious, but not all. I know John Wren's tote is still in Johnston St (not the hotel of the same name). And I know the furphy about the cellar/basement of the Grace Darling Hotel being where our club was formed. It wasn't, although that didn't stop me going there to drown my sorrows after out 2003 GF loss. But that's another story.

My family lived near the Richards in Abbotsford, but I can't remember the name of the street.

I'm about half way there with this tour. Maybe I should go along to fill in some gaps.:D
