My daughter (20 this year) has decided to go to England beginning of April. Her maternal grandparents were British now aussie citizens. Funny situation as there is not much family to bludge off back in England. Apparently.

She will only have about $3,500 when she lands.

What is the best way to set up for banking etc ?

She has avoided a credit card so far here, just uses eftpos and cash.
Banks with westpac.

Should she get a british bank account before travelling and change the money here.

Get a Credit card to use over there.

Any bits of general info would be appreciated. Thanks.

westpac deal with the midlands bank in england.

you could send the money there perhaps and open up an account when she arrives.

alternatively she could apply for a credit card and then if in need you can assist her with funds and top up her account in need. much quicker this way.

My advice would be not to go somewhere so cold / sh1tty / expensive and miserable.

But each to their own of course - whatever wets your whistle.

Cheers.
Organised a C.card yesterday. The bank was helpful. Apparently Westpac have some hookup with Barcleys were ETPOS is available in England at a Barclays branch.
She is fully on top of internet banking so things look easier once you talk it through.

Next thing is to setup a European (?) bank account. We hear you need one for employment. Without one you cannot get paid.

dugrene you'll get better replies if you put this on the money board

Thanks I'll wait another day or so and see what happens. If need be i'll ask a mod to move it.

I had the classic problem when I went over. Without a residential address I couldn't open a bank account. Without a bank account I couldn't rent a flat.

I'd recommend setting up a bank account in Australia with HSBC who are a major bank over there. It will make things much easier, and you won't have to worry too much about closing it because you can use if when you get back home - if need be.

A credit card is actually very very handy. You can withdraw cash wherever you go in the local currency and not have to worry about carrying travellers cheques, cash or getting money changed. Also most places you don't have to pay the conversion fees so you get a better deal.

if she is decent looking she can stay at my house for free.
save her some cash..

seriously..
this girl needs a globally recognised bank card..
that can be used at most cashpoints so she can gain access to her money from home .

it's a 'chip' that is in uk credit cards, many places won't accept my credit card becasue it doesn't have a chip... trust me get her to set up a 'hsbc' account before she goes :)

i was only messing around ,pal.
but hey ,I think your daughter will need more then 3500 dollars.
the exchange rate will kill that money pretty quickly.
using this currency converter you can see the difference.

http://www.xe.com/ucc/

3500 aus dollars is equal to £1,469

that wont last ten seconds in southern england.
last longer in the north though. but not by much.

im in the north.
sure its way way cheaper .but at the same time there is way less jobs.
however there are some economic hotspots in the north like leeds and manchester .
I think that girl should try to travel in a group and split all the costs.
going it alone will be too much.

Hey, you might wanna check out a thing called "First Contact". They're a company for about $100+ or thereabouts, help you get settled in England. Help you with the bank account, finding a job, somewhere to live, etc etc etc... I used em and they were ok.
