I was just given a promotion within my job. which is huge, as my pay goes up by 17, 000 per year.

The thing is, i start work at about 14:30 in the afternoon, 5 days a week. i have recently become engaged to my partner and am worried that with her working through the day, and i not finishing until late at night could have a negative effect on our relationship.

we have both made a commitment not to let that happen, and if there is ever a moment where it seems my job is having a detrimental effect on us, ill quit.

iS there anyone out there that has ever been in a similar situation?

This new job is a great oppurtunity in the big picture, but i cant help but think i have made a mistake by accepting this job

You might not have the opportunity again. It is worth trying and if it doesn't work, look for other opportunities. The money is significant but the hours obviously are no good. You make many sacrifices in life - this job is an opportunity but if it is affecting your relationship, you can always quit

I've been in a similiar situation for almost 20 years. My jobs require me to spend a large amount of time away from home, i used to spend 9 months away in a year; thats down to 4-5 months now. I used be in the Navy now its the Offshore oil and gas industry.

Yourself and your partner will have to sit down and make some decision like myself and my wife have; sacrifice now to earn the money to set yourself up for the future. If you can be smart and say to your partner, look i'ii put all the extra into savings; shares, super, managed fund etc, and this will set us up for the future but i will only do it for X amount of time, having a plan you both for for really helps.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do for a living. And how much were you on before you got the promotion.

I used to work nights and didn't get to see the wife and kids much...it was rough.
Now I work normal hours and I see them all the time...its rougher.

i work within the betting industry, and my pay is going up to just over 57pa

I would take it, it would set you up for the future. The betting industry is dangerous from what ive heard, so i would stay away from the mobsters if you want to enjoy the pay rise, instead of swimming with the fishes.
