I've decided that I'm not particularly enjoying 'working for the man' so to speak, especially not full time anyway, and would absolutely love to be able to work from home for myself. Work my own set hours and have all that freedom. So I guess I'm just curious if there's anyone else out there that works from home, or has their own home business.

Share guys! Let me in on the secrets.. haha. I think the main thing I really want is to be able to work my own hours because I just can't function 100% 8-5 every day, I have times when I'm ready and raring and times where I want more than just a lunch break.

So yeah, what do you guys do?

Until last October I spent about 3 years working at home for a North American Company. I now have a normal office job again 4 days a week and are starting some of my own part time business at home...

Anyway its a bit late so will be brief but I thought I would give the quick pros and cons:

Pros:
- Freedom of time of when to choose to do work. I could go and say pick my wife up in the middle of the day, or go and watch Essendon train. Being home when a trademan visits etc etc. Also if not in the mood to work I wouldn't, while other times I would work at midnight because i felt like it.
- No traffic to fight, and you can work in your jocks.
- you can work much faster and more efficiently with very few distractions.
- No (well much less) Office Politics!!!

Cons:
- Less social contact. This is the big con, particuarly if it a job/business where you dont have to say meet clients much. Not having people to discuss the footy with on monday morning! (probably why i joined BF)
- Less direct help and feedback with your work. If you get stuck on something it can be hard as there isnt anyone in the next room to ask advice.
- You need to be disciplened. You can get tempted and distracted by other things. Also some time other people think because you work from home you can drop everything or be anywhere at any time which is simply not the case.

There are other pros and cons, but probably depends on what you do etc..

So yeah, what do you guys do?
I work for myself in numerous businesses. Today is about the 3rd or 4th day I have taken off since I got back from Melbourne in early January (this includes weekends). I average working 12 to 14 hours a day. My wife has gone to a dog show over the weekend with friends. I have lots of grog on hand, and plan to listen to the games over internet radio tonight with my grog and dogs.

In short, if you don't bust your arse you'll never get anywhere, whether you work for yourself, or work for "the man". It's just more important to work harder when you do work for yourself.

If you don't have the disipline to do it day in, day out, then don't even try, because you'll fail when put up against all the other bosses out there in the same business who will do it.
