Business & Finance Working less

I doubt the world could run on 3-4 days per week

It couldn't but that doesn't mean everybody in the world has to have their days off at the same time.

As in it could work if people rotated their work hours.

Different strokes for different folks.

I predominantly work business hours. 7.5 hours a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks a year. Pretty standard stuff.

The expectation is 9-5 Mon-Fri give or take, but it's not like clocking on and off at a factory. I enjoy is the freedom to do 10 hours one day and 6 the next etc. Like everyone I'd like to work less, but I'd rather work more when I'm doing something productive and less when I'm not. Nothing worse than sitting around for 40 hours a week feeling like you're wasting everyone's time then being overloaded later on.

IMO the best thing I could hope for in terms of work life balance is more holidays. If given the choice between 10% more money and the same money but 5 weeks more annual leave per year (roughly what it works out to pro rata) then I'd take the holidays every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I get 5 weeks annual leave :)

That's great.

I don't know how anyone lives and works in the States given they only get 2 weeks a year.

Yeah, that would suck. Not to mention most employers there are stingy with health and investment benefits. The standard in Canada is 3 weeks which isn't too bad I guess. Less than that would be terrible though.

This is something that needs to be seriously considered in future.

Many cities are struggling to cope with moving the workforce in and out of the CBD at peak times - reducing these peak times by creating the four day week (which some parts of the US have trialled) and staggering start/finish times may bring with a raneg of benefits for infrastructure management of large cities, as well poroviding (as an example) parents of school children more options in getting their kids to and from school.

I used to work 4 days on, 4 days off in rotation. 12 hour shifts. I loved it.

Now I work Mon-Fri from 10:30 to 7pm for the same pay.

Its OK I guess but I would take the long days with bigger breaks again in an instant if the company offered it.

Today has truly been the ultimate bludge day. Done about an hour of work. Need these days once in a while.
