I don’t know if you people might think of me as sick or bad or something but I have just been surfing and was looking at a few sites about the Worlds Tallest Buildings. A few have shut down considering the tragedy but there is still a few open. Anyway I was just amazed at some of these buildings already standing today and a few that are on the way.

One of the most amazing things that I read was about the Empire State Building. It is currently the 9th (now the 7th  ) tallest building in the world but the thing that amazes me is that all of the buildings that are now taller than it were built from 1972 and onwards. The WTC towers were built in 72 and 73, Sears Tower in Chicago in 74 and the other 5 buildings were completed in the late 90’s.

So the Empire State Building that stands 1,250 feet tall and has 102 stories (Worlds tallest are the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur that stand at 1,483 feet) was the tallest building in the world for 41 years until the WTC towers went up. It was built in 1931!!! That’s amazing!!

Another interesting thing was that Chicago are kind of known as the skyscraper capital of the world, they have 4 buildings over 1000 feet, 2 over 900 feet and 3 over 850 feet. They apparently weren’t happy with losing the title of tallest building in the world when Sears Tower was overtaken by the Petronas Towers. So I was reading and maybe Chicago1 can help or confirm, that there is another building under construction in Chicago called the Dearborn Tower and it will stand at 1,550 feet tall! 67 feet taller than the Petronas Towers.

I also read on ABC.net that back in 1998 Melbourne approved a plan to build a skyscraper in Melbourne that would have 120 stories, 10 more than the WTC towers!! It didn’t say exactly how big it would be but it did say that once finished it would be the biggest building in the world…..in Melbourne!!! Maybe all you guys in Melbourne can confirm this seen as it said it would be built within 5 years and the article was dated Dec 98, it would have to be half done and you couldn’t miss something that big being built?

I also read a article dated July 28th 2001 about Donald Trump was planning another skyscraper in Chicago to be over 1500 feet tall. The plan is to demolish the 7 story Sun Times building and build his Trump Tower there. But of all these huge towers, some under construction, some still in the pipeline and maybe some been cancelled after Tuesdays events there is one that just blew me away.

The Centre of India Tower or The Katangi Tower in Katangi, India is apparently under construction and is due to be completed by 2008. The mastermind behind it is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the man who taught the Beatles to meditate. The tower will stand at 2,222 feet!!! And have 224 stories!! That’s 739 feet taller than the current tallest building in the world! I will try and put a picture down of what it is supposed to look like when finished. Don’t know if it will work.

Anyway a brief history if anyone is still reading as this is the longest post I have ever written, I hope ive still got the attention of a couple of ppl. Back in 1913 the Woolworth Building (793ft) was the tallest building in the world for 16 years until the Chrylser building (1,046ft) went up in 1929. Two years later that was beaten by The Empire State Building (1,250ft) and that stood for an amazing 41 years until the WTC towers (1,368ft) were built in 1973. That was beaten a year later in 74 when Sears Tower (1,450ft) was finished. That stood for 24 years until the reigning tallest building in the world was completed, the Petronas Towers (1,483ft). There are as many as 10 buildings I think in the works so I don’t know how long the Petronas Towers will remain the tallest.

So there you have it, sorry about all that hope you enjoyed reading it, this probably wont get one response but I don’t care I enjoyed posting it. Hope it wasn’t inappropriate. Anyways later.

Thanks for posting that Jod. Actually I was curious about that information, but have been both too busy & lazy to look into it myself. Now I don't have to.

It's kind of strange, I don't mind looking off of a mountain or cliff-side, but I hate being up in a building. Gets me queezy. Being from an area of Missouri which is situated in "tornado alley" We are used to the underground life. Our basements are an integral part of our houses. 110 stories up is an alien way to live for me.

Thanks again. Peace,

Mooster

I remember the proposal by the Grollo brothers to build the world's tallest building at Docklands.

The Kennett Government was very gung-ho about it but the proposal fell through for avariety of reasons.

Mostly because the building would not be in scale with the rest of the Melbourne CBD and the shadow it would cast over the South Melbourne / Port Melbourne area would be too much for all those 000's of residents whose residences would be in permanent shadow for pretty much the whole day.

When it looked like Grollo was going to have to battle a whole lot of groups opposed to the idea through thecourts, just to get the proposal up and running, the idea was canned.

... and a bloody good job too. The tower would have looked absolutely ridiculous, would have been a 'shag on a rock' and would have been so out of scale and looked so innappropriate that what is now the most elegant skyline in the Southern Hemisphere would have looked lopsided and idiotic.

cheers

Seems like a good way to spend money in a country with millions of starving people!!!

Also, it is a lovely way to start a property crash. I know little (read nothing) of the Katangi commercial property market, but demand and supply is still a pretty simple concept to grasp.

The World Trade Centre towers had 10,000,000 square feet of office space. The Rialto has 1,000,000 sq ft (82,000 sq. m) and is the city's biggest building in this regard.

We had a property crash in Melbourne when we built too many premium towers (101 Collins, 120 Collins, 333 Collins, Stock Exchange, Melbourne Central etc.) which added hundreds of thousands of square metres of office space to the CBD. Obviously rents plummeted and we have only just recovered!

This Indian tower looks like it would have a higher net lettable area than the WTC and will therefore add more than 800,000 sq.m. I can't imagine the amount of office workers in that city soaking up all the space, so you do the maths!

P.S. I wonder how they are going to get that mystical glow around the tower!?! ;)

Argh, I hate tall buildings! I used to work in QV1 (Perth) for six years. Every winter I'd invariably get the flu at least once sometimes more. Crowded lifts and parking problems also drove me mad.

I'm much happier in a low rise building in West Perth now. Even got my own parking spot:cool:

I love the tall buildings. I want to know just how high they can go. 2000+ feet sounds a little extreme though, it would be awesome to see though. I had to take the WTC buildings out of my simcity city though so that was a bit of a problem for the economy.

Would love to have seen the view from those buildings, over New York!!

When it comes to 'ultra tall' office towers, it seems the cold hard reality of the dollars and cents of commercial real estate development get thrown out the window and replaced by such irrational, and emotive factors such as national pride.

If the builder of these towers actually sat down and did their sums, hardly any of them would have built at all.

The Empire State Building was not fully leased untill 1952. - 20 years after it was completed. For years and years it was derisively referred to by New Yorkers as "The Empty State Building"

The Petronas Towers in KL look impressive, but they are mostly empty, and there is absolutely no prospect these truly massive buildings will ever be fully let in the foreseeable future (Can Satay Mat verify please ?)

To the best of my knowledge, Rialto has yet to be fully let out as well.

AS for the towers in India, well, again its national pride at work here - even in a buoyant market like Indian Commercial Real Estate is at the moment, this tower will stand half empty for years and years before it is fully let out.

Nobody seems to make any money out of these grandiose projects, yet they still get built - go figure ?

cheers

Can't say I know this for a fact, but I think it has been. The Melbourne office rental market is now quite tight and a new set of building projects are now on stream (not the stupid Docklands tower though, thank God)

Went to New York around 1990, and the view from the top of the WTC is someting ill never ever forget.

One of the best pictures i took was of a window cleaner, who was approximately on the 80th floor of the WTC

yes indeed BSA....for a long time the second tower was completely empty....in a net sense at least one of the towers would still be empty today.

They are pretty good looking as far as big buildings go though....at least there is a bit of design to them not just a large glass rectangle.

Agree with you though....I can think of a few other things which might have benefitted from the dough and when Chicago or India or whoever go 1 storey more what do you have then ?

A half empty second tallest building in the world ???

give me some decent architecture any day

They looked huge to everyone on tv, but after seeing them in 'real life', it makes it even more unbelievable to imagine them coming down. I was there in '99 and went to the top. I got all my photo's and video out the other night - unbelievable is all I can say.

Thanks Ripper and everyone else who responded. I saw an article in the West Australian a couple of days ago with the WTC towers superimposed in the Perth skyline and then you really realise how big they are (if you havent seen them in real life). They are double the size of Central Park tower and the Bankwest tower...just huge!

I was also on a site that ranked the worlds best skylines and New York was 1st with Hong Kong 2nd and Chicago 3rd. Sydney came in in 6th Melbourne 15th, Brisbane 40th, Perth 54th and Adelaide wasnt in the top 100 :D Dont know how he ranked them or anything though, he also had pictures of most of the cities skylines and although NYC is obviously very impressive i found Chicago's to be the best.

With Big John (John Hancock building) as they call it, the Amoco building and the daunting big black scary looking impressive Sears tower it just looks awesome. Also as i said im my original post that they have another 1 over 1000 feet and 5 more 850 plus...it just looks awesome.

With Sears tower and Big John both being big and black it just gives you this almost aprehensive feeling ...its just awe inspiring. I really want to go to Chicago.

Rialto has been fully let for over a year (relet OneTel space with ease) and total vacancy for Premium Grade buildings is under 1%.

Over building in Melbourne may not occur in the same way as the early 1990's, due in part to finance institutions requiring pre-leasings prior to finance.

Which building is safer ?

Pentagon - 20,000 occupants - 800 dead.

WTC - 50,000 occupants - 5000 dead.

In countries with plenty of space (US, Australia) I think the pentagon is more desirable

I went to the Petronas Towers in KL last year and it was incrediable to see a building of that size. The public was only allowed to go up half way for whatever reason, but still the view overlooking the city was amazing!
