Would be interested to know of anybody's 'worst ever game' that they attended - wasn't thinking about watching your team cop a thumping (as a Swan supporter there's far too many of those), but just a crappy game; low skills, boring, no crowds, wet, cold etc. Two spring to mind for me:
Ess v Swans 1992, MCG.
Dreadful, dreadful spectacle. A dull, bored crowd. Ess won, but even my Ess mates say it was a crap game.
Lowlights:
- Swans in the middle of their worst-ever period, realistically having NO chance of winning;
- Mark Harvey & Luffy played kick to kick for five minutes: two marks & kicks each;
- Madden & TD, well past their prime, rattling around in the Ess reserves;
- I sat in the crowd behind John Barnes who had one leg in a full cast whilst his mates got hammered and spewed up around him.
Syd v Foots, 1993 (I think) Western Oval
- Poured rain all day, absolutely freezing, no shelter to speak of;
- Ground a bog, about 5 goals to each team in total;
- We were losing all day before Jason Love put us in front by a point with about 2 mins to go;
- Super McPherson somehow manages to kick a point from 50m out on the boundary. After all that, a tie;
- VB cans were warm, despite the temperature;
- Got a parking ticket.

Any others?

Got a couple from 1996.

Footscray vs Bears - Whitten Oval

- Muddy
- Stinked like something died there
- Long walk back to car

Collingwood vs Bears - Victoria Park

- Stinked
- People in our area uneducated (that's not a cheap shot, that's just what happened)
- Warm Drinks
- (Reminding you I was only 7 at the time) Having Collingwood supporters throw beer cans (and one glass bottle) at me. Thankfully only five cans hit!

And This last year

Sydney vs Fremantle - SCG

- Don't get me started with the supporters
- We lost
- Food was cold
- Food gave my brother and me old girl food poisoning

That's just a few!

Any time Melbourne or Richmond play the first game of the year. Invariably the biggest letdown of the return of football.

Oh, attended. Probably the Port vs Richmond game where we kicked 5 goals and won.

I probably have a short and selective memory, as my worst are both since I started watching Collingwood with the love of my life. These are nothing to with weather or external conditions - just the play.

Worst one I attended was Pies v Fremantle at Docklands - may have been 2001? but it was so bad and dull that the crowd was all chatting like it was halftime, but during play. Surreal, and I've never seen before or since, especially not among Pie supporters. This MAY have been the game that Buckley got over 40 touches and that was the only point of interest for the spectators?

If TV counts, there was a game between Collingwood and Brisbane at the Gabba in 99 - not only was the play appallingly bad (hard to believe now), but the commentary, camera work, everything was like amateur hour.

Hawthorn versus Fremantle 1997 season. Just a pathetic effort by the Hawks. Lost by a goal and a bit after leading. Shocking crowd, shocking weather, shocking day at Waverley.

2002, Ess vs Rich at the MCG. Essendon won by a point, but by far the most boring, and shocking game of football skill-wise. The final score was something like 53 to 52, and after quarter time there was something like 8 goals only scored.

Adelaide Vs Collingwood, Monday Night Round 21 1997

Both games featuring Essendon Vs Richmond in 2003

The first half of the St. Kilda Vs Sydney game at Telstra Dome in 2002

1988 - Footscray v Geelong Whitton Oval

Freezing Cold, pouring rain. Asked the person behind the bar at the Mount Mistake End under the scoreboard if the VB cans on the counter were cold. Answer was "What do you reckon?".

Any game at Waverley.

2002 St.kilda v Freo Opt@rse Oval. Overcast day, crap game, crowd of 8,000 Opt@rse Oval, and that electronic scoreboard would have to be the biggest insult to the football going public's intelligence since the Woof Woof Woof of the late 90's.

1997 GF

2002 Saints v Sydney. Ultra Flood was bad enough, but the fact that Sydney couldn't beat it was worse.

Hawthorn v Port Adelaide 2000 at the MCG late in the year was a simply appalling match of footy. Port were in their "kick it anywhere but towards the goals" stage.

Hawthorn v Richmond 1995? at Waverley. Easter Sunday, got completely drenched just going from the bus to the ground, we kicked 4 goals to 3 but lost - ground was a lake.

Sydney v Fremantle 2001 or 02 at SCG. Never actually seen this game, but it was so bad Ron Barassi described it as the worst match of football he had seen in his life! Every single person from Bigfooty who was there said the same thing, as did several media outlets. It must have been a shocker.

Horrendous game. By memory we had lead all day due mainly to Richmond's inability to kick a goal. The conditions were the worst I have ever seen.

Yeah, remember 'lowlights' from that one too. Thankfully wasn't telecast. Swans seem to figure heavily, what with this game and the 'ultra-flood' tie of 2002 (Wulfy running into the open.....post). At least we get best at something!

I nearly fell asleep at the match, left the game with 5 minutes left and St Kilda up by 3 goals, got home and found out we got a draw. Looking back on that match the Saints set out to Uberflood the match and everytime the Swans attacked we got held up. I think St Kilda got what they deserved in that match, they didn't deserve to win and they didn't deserve to lose. Corn Flakes thought he was on to something and tried the same tactics a week late against Collingwood and they got belted.

Round 3 2003, Richmond def. Fremantle

"after eight years of below-average rain Melbourne’s long-running drought broke in such spectacular fashion that the MCG soon resembled a lake"

It was like watching a primary school game. Someone would pick the ball up out of a puddle closely surrounded by half the blokes out there and kick it 20 metres to a bloke from the other team standing in a puddle closely surrounded by all the other blokes out there. Then he'd kick it back again and so on...

Every now and then just to break things up one team would get two kicks in a row and eventually scramble it through for a score. But not very often.

That Swans / Saints game was probably the most dreadful game I can remember.

I don't have a problem if the weather is bad, provided the endeavour is there.

It's when conditions are good, or under the roof that there are no excuses.

I was going to say this game too. Cold night, bad skills, marquee players missing on both sides. The only time in the game anyone on the ground looked like they gave a crap was in the last five minutes.

The second Richmond game from this year was pretty lousy too.

It looks like Sydney and Richmond are leading the way at the moment.

West Coast Vs West Bulldogs a final in 1999 at the MCG... I remember it was played at night and in the worst possible conditions imaginable with a gale force breeze all night.... made it almost impossible to play.... in the end Eagles got up by less than a goal but it was a shocking game to watch.

First game I wa dead serious about leaving after quarter time.

Most pathetic display of football by teams - i.e. playing so far below themsleves it was a joke.

Worst game I've been at was Carlton v Essendon R22, 2002 at the G. It was something like a 50 point Essendon win but Carlton just flooded in the last quarter and I dont think a goal was scored. Really utterly boring football and I think both sides would agree

Don't talk crap!!! Thomas flodded because we had a very very undermaned backline, if i remember correctly we had only one actual backman in the game the rest were 'filling in'. He said this many, many times in the media in the following weeks. Don't troll for the sake of trolling dude..it's pathetic!..sorry.. that's a bit harsh..but i'm sick of all these 'corn flakes' bandwagon jumpers

Another nomination from me

1998 - Essendon versus Fremantle

Incredbily boring game at Waverley. Can't recall the final scores but, the game was so slow. This was after having difficulties on public transport getting there as well (there was a fatality at Holmesglen that morning which caused trains to stop at Darling)

Being a regular AFL attendee for the past 30 years (now non attached due to the demise of the roys) i feel that there has being a substanical increase in the number of 'flat' games played.

i belive that this has being bought about,in part, becuase of the following

FINAL 8
The fact that half the teams make the finals means that there are diminished consaquences of a win or a loss.Teams will tend to play hard at home and easier on the road.This means there is less incentive/neccesity for attacking/risk taking play.

LONG SEASON

Teams/coaches are very conserative in there approach to the season and the fact that they must nurse many players through the year.Hence they discourage contest so as to try to ;imited phyiscal contact/injuries.

SMALLER LISTS
More players are playing hurt than ever before.As the stakes rise and numbers fall clubs must play there better players.Naturally this means less skill and less adventure

MORE NIGHT GAMES
These games are often played in poor conditions.Also when teams strike a windy day they play poorly as they may have only played in still night conditionds or at Telstra

BETTER DEFENSIVE SKILLS

more play around the boundry line

FEWER FREE KICKS

more packs/more scragging
