Dunno. Religion has certainly played it's part in bringing grief to people throughout history, and there would be less violence and death without it, but ultimately it's the desire for power and superiority that causes conflicts.

Religion has it's upsides too. It may be largely fictitious, but it brings meaning to a lot of people's lives and helps explain a lot of difficult philosophical questions. In fact, I'd even say that the world would be a fairly boring place without it.
