Hello fellow tragics.

Now that there’s plenty of meat on the Clarkson rumour I thought this might be interesting.

Despite my personal animosity towards the sniping midget I believe his signing would be a more impactful (in a good way) and bigger get than the last BIG one, Chris Judd.

Wouldn’t say so - Clarkson has been turfed by his Club whereas Judd sought a move back home where basically every Victorian club was after his signature. You could also guarantee what Judd was bringing to the field. Clarkson - a champion coach - could still find it difficult or impossible to turn our terrible on field performances around. Judd was also a one man show - Clarkson will also assemble his own team of assistants.

Judd was the best player in the league in his prime when he chose us. And we just spent the previous 3 years last or 2nd last
Club is in much better nick these days

Judd had the capability, drive for sure. But club didn’t do enough around him to change.

Clarkson has the capability. Open question whether he has the drive for the job. But the club will have to change enough around him to be successful.

Very hard for one person to change the culture. If he’s got the passion and energy for the undertaking, we should absolutely get him in. If he can precipitate the cultural change needed he trumps Judd for sure.

The best/right coach has more of an impact than the best/right player IMO.

Yep. Spheres of influence.

Judd came in and did everything he could. Captaincy Day 1, three straight best-and-fairests, Brownlow for good measure. Improved (somewhat) the culture of the playing group. And I also think we forget, over time, just how low we went during the Smorgon/Pagan years in particular. I feel like Judd did work miracles (from where we were). But he wasn't in a position to do anything about our nightmarish drafting whilst he was a player, which has been an important factor in our tribulations of the last six years, regardless of our opinions on Bolton and/or Teague.

Clarkson could well achieve a lot more. But I think he also starts from a much higher baseline. Yes, it feels like we've had a shambolic season (and football department review). But we still finished 13th, with an 8-14 record, and we have three players under the age of 24 in the All-Australian squad. I reckon Clarkson would need at least one top-four finish for parity with Judd. Naturally, if he wins a flag, he wins everything.

Yes we are still paying for getting a total of one good player from the 09-14 national drafts in Cripps.

At least we got Ed Curnow and Casboult who were good from the rookie draft. Also got Docherty and Jones in too, but that’s it.

I loathe Clarkson as well for what he did & how he played, but his coaching record says it all....he is a great coach!!! Would almost be as big a get as Barassi was back in the day, so yes bigger than Juddy, but not by much....if it happens of course?!!
