360 Xbox External Memory

Hey fellas, I only have a 4gb slim console, I need more memory for Halo 4 and I have customized my USB to meet the requirements of the Xbox through the Xbox itself and today when I turned it on to play it didn't ask me to select a memory unit.

Wasn't reading it as a Xbox formatted USB. What do I need to do to stop this from happening once Halo 4 comes out?

How do I actually set up an external hard drive to use on an xbox? Do I have to buy a specific hard drive or will any do? or am I reading this completely wrong? (Sorry, im not too comuter savvy)
