NHL rivals goes very well from all reports. Haven't got Live yet but will have it hooked up in the next few weeks and NHL will get a solid run, might try one of the shooters like Rainbow six 3 or ghost recon.
The games I see people playing most on Live are:
Project Gotham Racing 2
Rainbow Six 3
V8 Supercars is popular at the moment too, although most of my friends who played it are now back playing Gotham again. (I got into V8 2 for about a week as well, and then got sick of it and have played Gotham since)

Rallisport Challenge 2 is out any day now as well (possibly today actually - I haven't looked) and I'll definitely be grabbing that.

you would have to know next to nothing about ice hockey and the nhl to like NHL Rivals. its utter crap. The best hockey game is ESPN NHL 2k4 by a long way.

nhl 2004 is still very good
one of the few good EA franchises after the FIFA series turned into utter crap

yeah NHL 2004 is pretty good. The franchise mode is awesome. But gameplaywise its not as as good a representation of real hockey as ESPN is. The goalies are quite poor, and its too easy to score goals, the passing is a bit off also. But overall its a good game, particularly for people not looking so much for realism.
Madden is the best EA franchise, its still the best NFL game going around.
