Afternoon all

I purchased an XBOX 360 yesterday and am having an issue with the XBOX Live component. Hopefully some one can help me out if they have been in a similar situation.

Anyway

I set my XBOX up yesterday and was playing most of the day. I decided to give XBOX Live a shot so I took the cable from the box, connected one side to the back of the console and the other to my router, now when I try and connect to XBOX Live, it finds that the connection is "Wired" but when it goes to IP Address, it comes back as "Failed".

Now, I'm not sure if another port on my router is suppose to "turn green" which means that it is connected (like it does with my PC) or what I have to do.

As I said, everything is plugged in correctly, however it can't get an IP Address, and that's pretty much it.

Has anyone been in a similar scenario?

I read somewhere that I may need to go into my router options and open the DHCP port (not sure what it does exactly) so I'll try that when I get home... But I think it's already open. :(

If anyone can shed some light for me it would be VERYYYYYYYY much appreciated.

Thank you sexy forumites

Opening ports is so you can get better connectivity when playing against other people. If the xbox can not resolve a IP address it is something to do with your router.

Is your router setup with DHCP or manually assigned static IP addresses?

I don't think the IP Address ever changes. Not sure to be honest.

I'm having a look in the admin/admin options for my router just now..

Basically.. in the main setup page, this is the only part that mentions DHCP

Local DHCP Server: Enabled
DHCP Relay Server: . . .
AutoDetect LAN DHCP Server: Disable
Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.
Maximum Number of DHCP Users:
Client Lease Time: minutes (0 means one day)
Static DNS 1: . . .
Static DNS 2: . . .
Static DNS 3: . . .
WINS:

and in the Applications/Gaming page it has all my ports + details such as..

Application - External Port - Internal Port - Protocol - IP Address - Enabled

HTTP
FTP
SMTP
TFTP
SNMP

etc. etc.

But there is no DHCP in the list... is there suppose to be?

We have a new problem.

I've got passed the IP Address stage.... and it's trying to make updates to XBOX Live... HOWEVER... while the download process is happening, it is coming up with Update Failed every time the bar moves up a bit....

So it's like connecting for a bit, then disconnecting..

I am baffled.

Restart your router, also what do you connected to it?

The only thing I have connected to it is the cable which connects my computer to the router.

I've restarted the router, and now I'm back to having the IP Address problems.

I think it may be a problem with my router settings or something.. I can't really work it out.. At one stage it was connecting completely, and then disconnecting... So we did have action, but not for very long..

Try plugging the xbox directly into the router (unplug your pc).

Is the router connected to a modem or is it a router/modem in one?

Yep thats my thoughts too.

I've personally haven't heard of any connection problems when plugging straight into modems (although i assume they happen), but i've had a couple of mates who just couldn't get live to work through a separate router.

Once they unplugged the router and went straight into the modem, no probs

Modem/Router both in 1.

I'm not really sure what the problem is. I've asked a couple of my mates who are the biggest poindexters you'll ever meet and they have absolutely no idea.

Last night when I did have it connected, it was downloading updates, and the bar would move up a little bit before the connection fails and I would have to reconnect again.

If I can't get it going who should I contact? Can I ring an IT Techy or will I have to find some greaseball who loves XBOX? I seriously hope I can get it going!!!!

1 Question.. If I unplug the connection from Router -> Computer it will mean my computer has no internet activity. If I put the XBOX cable into it, will it be able to connect still or not? I didn't think so??

If you plug the xbox directly to the router your pc will lose its internet connection. I don't think this is a XBox problem your xbox is just another device to connect to your router. What brand is your router?

I have a Linksys.

I really have no idea anymore hey. I can't get the IP Address like I was last night now..

Confusedddd!!!!
