With Microsoft performing a major backflip, I'm no longer sure which console to get first (or as my only console).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

How do they compare head to head?

What exclusives do each bring (I hate Halo)?

Will Playstation Plus be cheaper than Xbox Live?

Exclusives will be the only real difference, other than price for gamers imo.

PS4 is cheaper, but almost identical hardware. Xbox OneEighty has mandatory kinect, whereas PSEye is optional.

I have never owned an xbox except for the original (Only bought it to play Fable, the only game I owned) and don't plan to own another.

With Microsoft's reversal of DRM there probably isn't too much of a difference. A large portion of the point of difference is probably exclusives but even they're mostly going the way of the gurgler as 3rd parties don't see much incentive to limit the install base which can buy/play their game.

Some of it will come down to what your friends get too. Ask around and if most of them have a common consensus the difference between the consoles is probably so marginal that you should just get what they're getting so you can play multiplayer and lend games.

That aside I could probably make a fair argument for the PS3 but that's as much bias speaking as it is rational thought.

Been an xbox owner for two generations but this gen I am going with PS4's superior memory config and open standard for indie games. Especially considering there is a huge chance DayZ stand alone will be exclusive to Sony. M$ backflip didn't sway me at all.

There isn't much of a difference between the two, get the system that you think has the better games or what your friends are getting.

If you're into online multiplayer Xbox would probably be the best console for you with dedicated servers for all multiplayer games. I can't really comment on the pros and cons of the PS4 as I don't know a lot about it.

Ps4: more raw power, cheaper, more value for your paid subscription, supports SD tv, no mandatory accessories, smaller design

xbox one: voice commands, dedicated servers, cloud use from day one

is this confirmed for ALL games ?

COD?

Pretty sure that's what they said.

Only thing I can find about it:

Perhaps most intriguing, however, is that Xbox One gives game developers the ability to access Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. That leads to a few obvious and immediate applications: All your downloaded and installed games and achievements are synced to the cloud and can be accessed and played without interruption on any Xbox One you sign in to; stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32.

Found this doing the rounds on facebook, covers most of the pros of each.

- It did fail to mention PS3 streaming on the PS4 and Sony embracing the indie movement by allowing self publishing. Until MS changes its policy on indies requiring a publisher you wont see as much indie stuff on X1.

- Also doesnt mention MS cloud service which offers dedicated servers to all X1 games. Sony have yet to outline its full plans for its cloud service apart from streaming of PS1,2 & 3 games but with the amount of coin they put up to get Gakai on board, i expect a similar service when it kicks off in 2014.

- On the game side, what has been shown on X1 is probably ahead of PS4 atm due to some 3rd party exclusives, expect ones not published by MS to eventually find there way to PS4 though as is the nature of the business. Sony have a much stronger first party with most yet to reveal their current PS4 projects, Sony is claiming 40+ exclusives in development and all of its studios currently working on games.

- Controllers come down to stick layout preference (yes there are people that cant adjust to different layouts sadly). Reports coming out of E3 that both controllers are very comfortable and are designed to follow the natural curves of your hands and fingers. MS have added rumble motors to the triggers for game immersion, while Sony have a clickable touchpad (which i only learnt today can detect a left and right click like a mouse) but have yet to show what it will be used for in game.

- I expect online to be similar on both, with PS4 finally catching up with cross game chat and most likely party chat (yet to be confirmed) Both are pay to play, Sony will now have some money to build and maintain a quality online infrastructure so will be interesting how it stacks up against Live. Personally PS+ gets the nod over Xbox Live Gold for offering a constant stream of free games every month, including a PS4 game available for free on launch. Live is now offering a similar free game service but so far is only offering Xbox 360 games.

- F2P games wont require a PS+ subscription, Not sure on Lives stance on this at the moment or if they have any F2P games available day 1 on X1.

If CoD gets dedicated on X1, you can nearly guarantee Sony will offer up something similar for PS4, they have previously used Amazons cloud service for Uncharted 2 multiplayer.

If not then CoD can get ****ed and I'll stick with BF4 which is dedicated on all platforms :thumbsu:

If I want to play a game on either that I can't play on something I already own and I can afford it, I will buy one.

I'll be waiting a while before getting either.

See which games come out and are set to come out later for each platform, how those first wave of exclusives fare, if there are any major problems with the consoles (RROD) etc.

Something about paying more money for a console that is technically less powerful than the direct competitor, just because they're including a peripheral very few people want, irks me.

Project Spark is free on the One as well. I think the other big advantage that doesn't seem to get mentioned much (especially with people assuming that Sony's online will get better with the additional income) is that MS are far superior makers of software and OS's, which could lead to better usability and features (ie. party chat). Just comes to mind after watching that video of the interface for the PS4 from the PS4 thread yesterday. It wasn't a great video.

Superior at eating up memory...

Windows 8 was awesome, as well.

So you think Sony are better at making software and OS's?

Feature wise maybe not but lightweight and efficiency wise definitely. It all depends on what you're after, pure gaming = Sony, tv integration etc = ms. Being a Linux user believe me MS's Operating Systems are not all that great.

So you think Sony are better at making software and OS's?

No, but apparently the Xbox one OS will take 3GB of RAM, whilst Sony's will just take the 1GB.

I'd rather as little memory as possible be used for things on a gaming console that have nothing to do with the games themselves.

Keep the discussion based on the systems and not on those looking to purchase or this thread will be closed.

been a xbox gamer since 06 and i am making the switch to PS4. obviously at first was to to PS4 supporting used games and cheaper online subscriptions (mortgage and child) so looking to keep it as cheap as possible.

with myself and my mates all preordering the PS4 already we have decided to just stick with it. so that is why i am getting a PS4, if Microsoft didnt have those DRM policies in place from the start we may have just stuck with the xbox.

I would recommend the PS4 under most circumstances at this stage but if you're a MP centric guy the Xbox is pretty compelling IMO. CoD and BF at launch. Halo and Titanfall next year, all with dedicated servers.

Steam Big Picture/Steambox flying under the radar here.

I doubt many people here even know what this is. Valve need to come out and show something tangible in the next 6 months. My preference is to remain in the Steam ecosystem but I need to see what sort of hardware they'll have and what sort of price. If they can come out with something with similar specs to the PS4 and around $600 I'd be there day 1.

You don't have to get one straight away. You can wait it out, see how they're going after a bit of time has passed.
