XP O/s Lost Files...need help

I am livid with Win XP regarding 'my pictures' doing a complete vanishing act.....I've been storing pics from my d/camera in the sub folders under my documents/my pictures and now am trying to retrieve them. I'm 100% CERTAIN that I didn't delete the images / folder. I've tried retrieving these personal pix using downloaded programs such as Digital Image Recovery, PC Inspector file recovery, Active @file recovery demo....not having much luck with any of them.

Has anyone lost files in similiar circumstances ??

Any advice. I'm staggered to find my partitioned drive full already (39gig) considering I had only 10 GB of personal data. Internet Temp files and Rubbish bin flushed out regularly.

Unfortunatelu I have no advice for you current problem.

But for all you people out there that are waiting for your turn on the PC-Problem Ferris Wheel... Buy a Mac.

Zeke, I don't know what your problem is? Maybe you have to keep justifying to yourself why you spent five grand plus on a system that nobody else cares about. Or maybe you're just bored because virtually nobody else uses Macs on this board and you don't have any little playmates.

But your not exactly being helpful. Let me give you a clue, buying a mac won't bring back his pictures. You might as well have said that he shouldn't have bought a computer at all, that way he couldn't have lost the pictures.

If you want to start yet another MAC vs PC vs Linux debate, fine, do that, start a new thread. Just stop bothering people with your own Mac drivel.

Not wanting to let the obvious pass by, but did you do a search of the entire harddisk for the pictures? It's pretty easy to accidentally drop and drag a folder from one location to another, giving the impression that a folder has been deleted. Another thing to do is to ensure that you can view hidden files or folders.

They didn't all get zipped up did they?

XP or NT just doesn't lose folders like that without good reason, namely a virus. Have you virus checked your PC? XP does uses alot of space, but it doesn't use anywhere near as much as you have said your system has consumed. Right click on each of the folders at the root of your hard drive and click on properties to see how big each folder is in order to seewhere the space is being consumed. The Windows folder should be close to 1.5 Gb in size.

If you read my post properly you will realise that I didn't suggest that buying a Mac would solve the issue in question. I was merely advising anyone out there who may be in the computer market that if they want to avoid the bug-ridden Microsoft operating systems they should check out Apple.

Why not suggest *nix at any chance some says "need help, using win 9x" then.

Chances are, more people will do that as it's cheaper (in most cases free) than spending a few grand on something they don't really need.

Also, if you have reinstalled windows recently, the my documents folder would have been renamed to something different, but you haven't mentioned that you can't see all other files in the my documents folder....so..... do a search for the filenames and also, go into folder options and make sure hidden files and folders is set so you can view them....
