can anyone here remember their first sanfl game attended?

mine was in 1989, roosters vs centrals at prospect oval, would have been close to 10k there that day, i don't remember a hell of a lot about the game, i remember running onto the ground after the game finished, and patting every player on the back that my cousin did (and from memory it was a & d jarman, steven sims, peter bennett and darel hart)

i also remember buying 4 packs of PK chewing gum :o

cast your mind back, when was yours??

Yep, I remember it well.

My parents used to take me to the footy but I never showed a lot of interest until 1965 when Norwood played Sturt at Norwood Oval. I went to the fence and watched the whole game. Ian Brewer, Bill Wedding and Ron Kneebone became instant heroes, Brewer kicked 5 goals.

I was also interested in the Sturt players such as Rick Schoff, Keith Chessell, Paul Bagshaw, John Halbert, etc, and it is probably why I have an interest in all teams, but Norwood was my favourite.

The funny thing was, Norwood won that game by 10 points. The following week we played Port Adelaide and beat them by 20 points (Brewer another 5 goals). Come the Grand Final, Port Adelaide played Sturt. Dad had to explain to me why Norwood weren't in it because we'd beaten both of them :)

Think it would be back in maybe 1997, got to toss the coin at Woodville.

Its kind of shadey in my meomory though.

My first game was most likely in 86. Thats the year we came back from Melbourne to live in Adelaide. I may have possibly gone to a game before then (I was born in 81) during a holiday back here but cant remember. Probably went to a few games in 87. 88 was the first season where I can remember being a specific games and what happened etc.

North vs Sturt at Adelaide Oval in 1971. North beat Sturt by 10 points with Barrie Robran out injured. After that it was probably the first time that season that we were considered a serious threat for the flag.
I lost the budget to that game a while back, but managed to score a replacement at Toss of the Coin a couple of years ago. Great memories.

Dad said I was taken to a South game in '65 at Adelaide Oval - I would have been 5. Can't recall a thing. However family story is I got slightly "lost" returning from the loo (yep - back in them days they let 5yo's head off to the loo themselves!). Somehow I made it to the pickets and was hoisted over the fence and told to walk along the boundary line until my parents spotted me - which they did & hauled me back over the fence!!

First game I can actually recall was a game (I think at Richmond Oval) between West & Torrens. We went there specifically because Dad wanted to see the likes of Head, Hank?? etc play. Only later did I appreciate Dads love of all footballers rather than barracking for a particular team. We got taken to see North, Port, Glenelg, Sturt and South a lot (South - cos he did a pre-season with them, back in the days when pre-season was 3 or 4 weeks long!). Despite this solid grounding - I ended up a pecker-head:confused:

If you were born in 1960, it had to have been Head because Hank retired in the late 50s.

I don't remember it at all but I've been told about it by my old man. I was very very young but worshipped 'Grenbel' Deitrich so I wanted to go see him in the flesh. As soon as I got to see him kick a goal I wanted to go home haha.

1970 or 71 (so long ago now) Port vs Centrals at Adelaide Oval. Dad (he was a North supporter) drove us up from Murray Bridge for the day. Port won by 20 points. I recall Max James kicking a bag (maybe 7) and Phil Haughan taking a heap of marks and getting his usual return of around 2.5 for Centrals.

Reckon it was 1977, Glenelg v South at Glenelg. Peter Marker broke his ankle severely. Syd Jackson played his only season, Carey, Cornes, Hodgeman a few players I remember from that game.

Bit sketchy on the details, so year, oppostion team, and oval mentioned above could be dodgy:o

Some time in the 70's .
West Torrens Vs Port Adelaide at Alberton .West Torrens Playing coach Billy Barrat (from victoria mad as a cut snake as my dad would say) kicking a drop kick goal from the centre of Alberton Oval.
Another game about 6(or more) of us were in the boot(open not closed) of a big old yank tank driven by one of the other kids dad to footy park .
No idea but i think West torrens lost both games , pretty sure they did at alberton .

In 1979 Woodville v Norwood at Woodville Oval. I barracked for Norwood back then. Woodville won by about 3 pts . My father who barracked for Woodville at the time (we lived in the area) never let me hear the end of it, even though I was 9 YO. Later on that season Woodville played Norwood at the Parade and Woodville won again

It was at this point my father attempted to get me to switch camps and "barrack for a decent team rather than them bunch of girls". Well, silly me believed him at the time and when Woodville played Norwood in the 79 Elim final, I was a fully fledged "Pecker". Needless to say I wasnt to happy after the game when we got flogged. Nor was I happy when he took me to every Woodville home game for the next 5 years . The fact that Norwood won premierships in 82 and 84 didnt enhance my humour.I honestly thought "someone up there doesnt like me"

However 1986 I will never forget, especially the 2nd half of that year will live with me forever. The 86 1st semi final against Port is still to this day the best game of football I have ever seen. I will never forget the sight of Port fans bailing me up in my Woodville scarf minutes after that game saying "I hope you thrash those Glenelg bastards next week". (I thought they were going to beat the shit of me !!!) I am a passionate WWTFC supporter to this day but nothing they have achieved will IMO better what the mighty Warriors achieved in 86.

Can honestly say I don't recall too much about my first SANFL game other than it was at the Kensington Oval or as it was later known the Olympic Sports Field out on The Parade, way back in 1963....I turned 5 Y.O. in '63 and recall that my dad and an uncle took my brother and I ( who is 14 mths. younger than me) to a North vs South game. Believe The Roosters triumphed narrowly!! We were sitting up in the stand at Kensington, but I was struggling to see over a tall adult sitting right in front of me!!! My dad's family were all Rooster supporters and Mum's clan were Tiger fans!

After brief flirtations as a North and Glenelg ( 1967 ONLY..) " barracker " saw the light from 1968 onwards to become a dedicated Pecker supporter!! Funnily enough an early Oval Avenue clear memory for me was Rd. 1 1969 when we beat Norwood quite comfortably by 7 goals!! This was the day the Barry Jarman Stand was officially opened....ahh, memories!!

Thanks a heap for that Adelaide Hawk, fantastic stuff!! By chance do you have the crowd figure for that game?? Also, did that old " high flyer " Don Lindner happen to play in this game? Two players of interest, North's Rookie Ruckman in '63: Dudley Hill finished 3rd in the Magarey Medal that year!! After only playing 50 or so League Games and leading the Rooster's Club Goalkicking in 1965, he wound up his League Career....

Peter Wilson, who played 50 League Games with South until the end of '63, ventured down to Oval Avenue for 1964, to become a " Pioneering Pecker ". In fact he was high in our best players in our Inaugural League Game against North at Prospect. He played 35 League Games and kicked 4 Goals from 1964-68. In 1965, he found himself in the Seconds team " a little more " and almost won a Seconds Magarey, finishing Runner-Up to South's John Mills. Just a couple of footy tales I thought I would share, Cheers TBW.

Sorry, no attendance or knowledge if Don Lindner played. Spelly would definitely have the attendance. Don Lindner played 22 games that season as captain-coach so there's a very real chance he was out there.

Dudley Hill, I can just remember him. He was very tall, about Bill Wedding height and not a bad player. For memory he wore No 2 jumper. Not sure why he retired so early but know he was a University recruit so it is possible he was a professional man and needed to give it away early due to their careers a la Clarkson, Lill, Sangster, etc.

From the SANFL Record Year Book it indicates Hill may have suffered injuries.

mine would have been footy park, round 2 1975, Sturt v Norwood
I was only 10 and we had just moved back to Adelaide after living in Darwin for about 9 years. Dont remember too much but we did go to a lot of footy that year as dad had joined footy park as a member
I have fond memories of hanging around under the stand after the game getting autographs as dad had a few beers in the bar
I can also remember being there the day the mini got blown up in the car park of West Lakes shopping centre, that was in 1975 but I think has been discussed on this site before

I think my first game was Port v Norwood/Sturt at Alberton in like 95 but can't remember what round. I could also say Glenelg v North Adelaide, Queens birthday 07 was my first as well.

I lived near Unley oval and I went to watch Sturt v Port at Unley in 1982 for my first ever match. There were about 18,000 for the match of the day and for those who know Unley Oval there wasn't much room to swing a mouse let alone the full cat.

As a Norwood fan I hated both teams but went along with some of my Sturt supporting mates to put shit on the Pies. Sturt won and it was a good game of footy. The SANFL was truly excellent in those days. I didn't bother with the VFL until Channel Ten started showing it live in Adelaide in 87.

regards,

REB

Port Adelaide V Central District in Whyalla. Late 90's ? ( 95- 96 )

A young Bowen Lockwood stood in the goal square for Centrals. I think Stewy Dew was there too, very young, for Centrals.

Port won by a kick just before the final siren. Many say the ball snicked the goalpost. Ump called a goal. I saw it snick the goalpost........but who was i to complain !! :D

Magical day, i sat right behind the goals, as close as you can get with your car, and tooted the horn all day. Few beers with mates. Top stuff.

Bowen Lockwood wouldn't have played for Centrals until at least 97 when Port had their first year in the AFL so must have been that year at the earliest :)

Maybe Lockwood wasn't there, my memory is a shocker. I do remember Stewy Dew though, patrolling Centrals forward line. He was big then too.

It could have been 97. Those late 90's are a blur for me :D
