Zip files

Ok, gone back to my old pc with no cd burner on it. I've got 15Mg of songs that I want to send to someone who can burn them for me.

How small should I be able to get it using Winzip or similar?

I've never had to zip up files before so I am really lost on this one.

You won't be able to get more than 1-2% at best out of an mp3 file... By definition, it's already considerably compressed (probably something like 10:1 already). Some types of files, like text, you'll be able to get a lot smaller.

I was trying to play one of them for my mum this arvo who lived through my teenage fascination, and she couldn't believe it wasn't going to be another synthesised pop thing.

At least she could hear it wasn't 'pop' through my crappy pc speakers, but I really want these burnt to cd, especially before the butchered version of one of them comes out on the queer eye tv show sound track. And I'd like a cd record of these demos before the album comes out with the full versions next year.

Oh well, dont' know what I am going to do. (Except maybe wait till Des gets up here on holidays and fixes it all for me )

You won't get them compressed any further, but you could use winzip to 'span' floppy disks. I'm assuming that you want to copy via floppy disks. Spanning means that the zip file is spread over more than one disk, even if the zip file itself is bigger than the size of one floppy disk.

Use winrar - better for breaking up and recombining files...

or just buy a cheapo flash drive (32mb are super cheap...even a 64MB)

only thing is u need a USB port for those

I wouldn't upload the music as MP3 files though. I'd rename their extentions to *.xfs or something similar.

From TOS for using their server space:
"• violations of any copyright or any other right of any third party, including, without limitation, material protected copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, or other intellectual property right used without proper authorization. "

Better still, use WinZip or WinRar as already mentioned.

Fraser, thanks for the warning, I might just be outside those limitations if I'm lucky.

Unsigned to a record label, not commercially available, and distribution amongst fans if not actually authorised has not been asked to cease via official website. So I might get away with it, at least long enough for someone (wink wink nudge nudge DES, hope you are paying attention) to download them from there for me. Gawd can't believe how much I am missing having a cd burner.......
