It's the first season of the new and improved NEAFL format. The competition has now left the ways of a two conferenced Northern and Eastern league and has now gone with a more traditional and hopefully competitive 14 team competition.

Good to see all of our home games are at Metricon stadium and the majority of them are curtain raisers to the big dance, giving fans exposure to the up and coming players.

Surely with the depth we will have next year we will start very close to premiership favourites?

I really don't enjoy the reserve games at Metricon, seems to lack atmosphere, I loved going to see the boys at the local clubs, guess I will be limited to Asply, Coorparoo, Southport and Redlands this year :(

Yeah but if your going to reserves games for the atmosphere you have the wrong grade lol

Has more to do with reliving my youth, a pie and a beer on the grass and going onto the field to hear the quarter and 3 quarter coaches address is something special.

Yeah I love it too. Would go to every reserves game if I could.

How come you only play 7 teams?

Nothing has really changed from the Suns perspective. The AFL teams will continue to play each other more often than the local teams (10 of the 18 games) and it seems the conference system has remained for the AFL teams. When I say that I mean the Suns reserves won't play any games against any of the local Sydney or Canberra clubs. Probably has a lot to do with the league administrators wanting to give local teams every chance of finishing high on the ladder.

So in the 14 team NEAFL there are like 5-6 teams you never play?

My understanding is that the local teams play every team in the league except for the AFL reserves sides that aren't in their state. (eg. Southport doesn't play the Swans or Giants reserves and Belconnen doesn't play the Lions or Suns reserves)

Next week heralds an exciting development in the alignment of the QAFL and NEAFL.

The restructure of the NEAFL and QAFL in 2014 will see a new alignment established between the competitions, culminating in series of mini drafts held next week.

The drafts will be the first of their kind in the state, creating a stronger link between the QAFL and NEAFL clubs, and continuing to establish a clearer talent pathway for Queensland’s footballers.

Similar systems have previously been in place in competitions such as the SANFL and WAFL, withAFL players drafted into state league clubs.

NEAFL teams have a list of 35 players, with no reserves team, and 15 players on the rookie list, meaning up to 13 players will be able to train with and play in a QAFL side each week.

Each NEAFL player will be aligned to a QAFL club, based on their previous playing experience or geographic proximity, where they will play in weeks when they are not playing NEAFL seniors.

Senior-listed players who have, in the past three years, transferred to a NEAFL club from a current QAFL club, are automatically aligned to their club of origin, if they choose to nominate that club as their club of choice.

Players who do not nominate their former club or aren’t eligible to do so must enter the mini draft in their region to be selected by one of the QAFL clubs aligned with their NEAFL club.

All NEAFL rookies must align themselves to a QAFL club.

The order of the mini draft is in the reverse order to 2013 ladder positions, with 2013 SEQAFL Division One clubs receiving picks before the former NEAFL clubs.

The order will be as follows:

Southport Football Club:

Surfers Paradise Football Club

Palm Beach Currumbin Football Club

Labrador Football Club

Broadbeach Football Club

Redland Football Club:

Western Magpies Football Club

Mt Gravatt Football Club

Morningside Football Club

Aspley Football Club:

University of Queensland

Sandgate Football Club

Wilston Grange Football Club

*In 2014, the QAFL will consist of four former NEAFL clubs, as well as six clubs in last year’s Division One community football competition.

The Redland mini draft will be held on Monday, March 3 at 4:00pm at AFL Queensland Training and Administration Centre, with Aspley’s at 5:30pm and the Southport mini draft at Southport on Wednesday March 5 at 5:30PM.

The QAFL will be the state’s premier community-based football competition, providing an important step in the state’s talent pathways.

Clubs applied for a QAFL licence based on six core pillars – administration, finance, brand and culture, performance, facilities and strategic plan.

Following this process, it was determined the QAFL would be a 10 team competition involving Broadbeach, Labrador, Morningside, Mt Gravatt, Palm Beach, Sandgate, Surfers Paradise, University of Queensland, Wilston Grange and Western Magpies.*

It's a decently structured system. Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are quite good at producing junior players so I think being automatically aligned to Southport will help junior development on the Gold Coast. Heard a rumour that Spida Everitt may be drafted to Labrador following their loss of Thurlow to Essendon.

Not sure on what the team line-up was. Whether or not we would have had many top-ups and such or not.

By my rough count the "2's" would have only had 8-10 listed players with the rest coming from the academy kids (U/18's).

The result means nothing, but I am really interested in how the listed players performed.

Hopefully no injuries to the GCS listed players.
