Things now becoming clearer about which games will be played when. Still a lot to be decided about positions.

If Freo and West Coast finish 1/2, then one QF1 will be played on the Saturday (so 1st place avoids back-to-back 6 day breaks) and QF2 on the Friday. The rest of the finals works around that.

After having done the ladder predictor, I have it working like this (I've assumed higher finishing team wins each final):

Week 1

Friday night: QF2 - West Coast v Hawthorn (Subiaco)
Saturday afternoon: QF1 - Fremantle v Sydney (Subiaco)
Saturday night: EF2 - Richmond v North Melbourne (MCG)
Sunday afternoon: EF1 - Western Bulldogs v Adelaide (MCG/Etihad)

Week 2

Friday night: SF2 - Hawthorn v Richmond (MCG)
Saturday night: SF1 - Sydney v Western Bulldogs (SCG)

Week 3

Friday night: PF1 - Fremantle v Hawthorn (Subiaco)
Saturday afternoon: PF2 - West Coast v Sydney (Subiaco)

Week 4

Saturday afternoon: Grand final

Gone early Suma, its not over yet.

More talking about when games are played, rather than finishing positions. We could easily get third, in which case Hawks would host us on the Saturday you'd think. Or we could finish lower than that.
But if we get second then I think those dates would be locked in.

Both Perth qualifiers will be at night, no why the AFL will have a day final in Perth.

Why?

They may be choosing between West Coast v Hawthorn or Richmond v North for the night game. Not sure why one would be that much more preferable to over-ride the consideration of a team traveling home on the day of their Saturday QF.

I really think this year is the best chance in a while for a bolter from 5-8 making the GF. No offence to Freo and WCE, but there's not much separating 1-8. Actually form-wise Adelaide are right up there, as are the dogs.

Next year will also be very interesting because you'd expect Port and Gold Coast to kick on, and the Giants to improve again (and they'll all get favourable draws).

I always find the AFL finals system weird how assuming all the higher placed teams win, 2nd gets the easier prelim on paper than 1st.
