Vic bias and the media

Yeah because Players from interstate clubs NEVER cop it for going back home to Victoria. *cough Jake Lever *cough

Some players cop it and some players don't. Jake lever and Gary Ablett (even though he had legitimate family reasons) copped it for going back home to victoria whereas i don't remember Bryce Gibbs copping it for going back home to Adelaide. It's just the way it is, stop with the victim mentality for everything

it's not a state thing but sometimes a short personality thing with the coach.. this happens that the coach is a firebrand who just doesn't' click with the
player and so they have a 'fight' and then they grapple and then they decide to go to some other state because they are known too much and get lost...

surely that is not my imagination.

The game itself .....yes chuck and Charles muck about at half time but the in game call is unbiased

What world do you live in?

Outside the games ESPN coverage is highly bias towards the top teams. Zero percent chance that the Sacramento Kings would get any coverage on shows like First Take, Inside the NBA etc more than once every couple of months (remember shows like Inside Take are on daily). Meanwhile every episode will talk about LeBron/Lakers and the Golden State Warriors.

The ESPN coverage is general is extremely bias to airing certain teams game - e.g. 14 games for the Los Angeles Lakers this season and zero games to the Sacramento Kings.

The ESPN coverage in game is a little bit better, but it's still bias. Commentators know a lot more about the big teams than the little one. They also, get names wrong for players on the worse teams. And, while not bias, there are plenty of guys that shouldn't be commentating (like the AFL).

NBA bias is substantially worse than the AFL and it's not even close, but at least that bias is towards good teams and the bigger market teams.

AFL Vic bias is purely by what state you live in, not how good the team is or the size of the supporter base.

They are better than the afl in my view

I live in a house by the beach ....lol just sayin

I live in the USA.

I support the Golden State Warriors, so I love the bias. It's great for me. But (unlike the Vics) I can admit that it actually happens.

Fair enough you probably watvh a fair bit of nba ...I watvh the two games a week we get on foxtell

Last year it was 4 games a week most weeks

American sport is much much much worse. NHL is about the worst.

Go check out the coverage in last years play offs if you want to see a focus on “fairytales” and ignoring of everything else.

Maybe if other states were as engaged in the media and sport and other states also contained over half of the competitions teams and also if other states media weren't ****ing shithouse then yeah maybe you'd find less "vic bias".

I'm ****ing sick of hearing about it. Was born in NSW and have lived in every state except tassie and the "bias" is nowhere near as bad as some people whinge about.

There's a similar complaint with music artists not touring WA or SA enough and it's because whenever they book shows there, **** all people show up or buy tickets.

Here's an idea, grow some balls and watch something other than vic media.

If you’re sick of hearing about it, why bump a thread from last year discussing it?
Pretty obvious. He thinks there is no bias.

Gary Lyon has Yeo as the best player in the comp. Several others in the Vic Media have the WCE as premiership favourites, bookies equal premiership favourites.

He has a point. Anyway every state will always have some bias towards their own, WA included obviously. It's just the way it is.

Its human but professionals in any field work to overcome any form of bias, others in the field bask in their parochialism.
Had a similar life experience living in all States & now a Vic by choice, living with it doesnt mean you have to live with it. Knowing who is making a claim is always a start, is it someone commenting on someone elses opinion, if so, dont bother.
The AFL employed media live, socialise & work in the AFL bubble that is Vic footy, they need to develop a network in the other States to be in touch, e.g Gerard Healy versus Gary Lyon, Lyon is in the bubble, Healy has contacts.

My point is bumping the thread, could encourage more whinging!
Then there will be whinging about whinging. Then the thread turns to a shitfight.
You know I’m right

Vic bias goes way past the media, the draft is ridiculously Vic biased and centric, Metro Vic which finished last in the under 18 champs yet has the most players invited to draft camp (23) by some amount as well as two other boys who didn't even make the squad, many pundits have 10 out of the first 12 Victorians and 20 out of the top 30, with all due respect the most popular number one pick is a 5'10' 72 kilo inside midfielder.

I may point out ATM probably the top 3 midfielders are all from Perth, actually all from the same school, Cripps, Yeo and Fyfe and are all quite a bit bigger than 5'10"

I would just point to the fact that Victoria has the 2nd (pretty sure) highest population (the other two in the top 3 having large rugby competition) the most teams in the comp and the most youth programs and engagement. Statistically speaking I'd be ****ing staggered to find that the ratio of vic to non vic youths swung towards non vic.

I'm not going to deny there may be certain journalists with a lean towards Victoria, but if you work in Victoria and your audience is mainly Victoria then what do people expect. It's not biased it's people doing their job (note I didn't say doing it well).

I remember living in SA thinking "shit, not much tigers coverage" then I remembered I was watching SA news, I promptly turned my attention to some vic based news and my tiger thirst was sated.

All I'm saying is, if you are sick of a vic bias, then watch more media produced in your state. It's there and it focuses on your state.

The vic bias in terms of footy doesn't bother me as people saying their is a vic bias for touring artists, but Victoria can't help it if other states don't turn up, show they care, pay attention, fork over money etc etc. I guess my annoyance is more targeted towards the music scene, but it's a similar sentiment in footy.

It's also not for me to claim what is and isn't because I know as much as most people on this site. **** all.

The issue is that Vic slanted media has become the default national football media

Living in Melbourne, I understood things like the Herald Sun and the local news leading up to the 2017 GF was all about Richmond and fair enough, they are Melbourne focused media outlets

But when national Channel 7 AFL broadcasts and AFL360 and the likes were doing the exact same thing, it was bullshit. Just watch the 2 hour lead up coverage to the 2017 GF and how much Richmond compared to Adelaide it was. I didn't watch last year but I would bet you it was similar disparity.

The 2nd post in this thread nailed it. After West Coast won last year, Channel 7 cut to Buckley in the coach's box. What. A. Joke.

Great example of group think ... if I was a Vic club fan I'd be praying the club CEO would have the list manager in the office & a please explain.

Has anyone mentioned the vic bias about players returning home?
When they go back to vic from an interstate club they’re returning heroes but if a player wants to go home to an interstate club they’re scum and don’t deserve to live etc etc a la Tim Kelly.

the victorian hypocrisy and double standards over tim kelly was next level

using Gary Lyon as an example of unbiased Vic media

just lol
