2012 AFL Draft Combine - News and Invitees

Basically, what I would take out of it, isn't who were in the top 10. But who were in the bottom 10. If you can't kick straight now, then I wouldn't be holding out much hope during a match.

Pretty much. I think that's how most of this combine works anyway. I know Mihocek's chances last year were dashed by his agility and speed testing. I doubt Whitfield is going to suddenly drop down to 15th selection and Lonergan is going to be top 10 based on this draft combine. I think it is way worse to be an outlier on the bottom end of testing, than it is positive to be an outlier at the top end of testing. What I mean by that is; being top end doesn't automatically mean you will be drafted, but being bottom end almost automatically guarantees you won't be. Being middle of the pack with a big reputation and proven footy credentials is better than being front of the pack with no reputation or credentials.

Having said that, I am over the moon with Lonergan. The Tassie boys are my 'team' in the AFL, and it looks like we have a quality new recruit :)

Just watched the wrap up of day 3. I wasn't aware of this beforehand but the Americans did not do the kicking and clean hands tests. Rationale was it was too much to expect guys who had only just become aware of the game a few weeks ago to be expected to complete these tests. Fair enough I guess but would have been interesting to see how they perform. Also I would have thought that clubs would have liked to see them do this if they were considering them as an international draft pick.

Ever ran a beep test? Heat will definitely play a large part in decreasing performance on one.
Ive ran many beep tests. Inside and outside. Hot days and cold. Heat makes it a little bit more uncomfortable but the test doesn't last long enough to seriously impact the result. Best result is a 14.0 when i was a bit younger and lighter.

Updated the OP with the results from the skills tests, as well as heights/weights/hand spans.

Unofficial word has Tom Clurey as the best performer in the beep test with a 15.0. Apparently there weren't a lot of players who broke the 14 mark, with many saying that the added heat today knocked an entire level off of their best.

Exaggeration for mine.

Just for another example, the highest confirmed beep test in the NBA is 14 from a guy called Steve Nash (some rumours say 17, but that's unlikely). What's his vertical leap? about 74cms. Which is pretty ordinary for a NBL player.

Lebron can barely even get through a game of basketball:

You are comparing endurance athletes to burst athletes, that is why you are failing to make a cogent argument.

You underestimate the amount of fitness needed to play basketball. It's such an end to end game that at times it can be like doing a series of repeat sprints.

OK, so you're different than pretty much everyone else in the world then. As for the rest of us, heat makes a difference.

Am from perth and used to spend a LOT of time in broome/Exmouth etc so maybe i am a bit bias when it comes to heat. But i find heat is more of a problem when i do exercise for longer periods than beep tests.

Wasn't sure if this had been posted yet but here's the beep test. Whitfield didn't take part due to his illness.
SHUTTLE RUN (BEEP TEST)
Tom Clurey - 15.1
Mitchell Van Den Berg - 14.9
Kamdyn McIntosh - 14.8
Joshua Kelly - 14.6
Will Hams - 14.4
Jonathan O'Rourke 14.4
Sam Siggins 14.4
Oliver Wines 14.3
Jason Ashby 1422
Brodie Murdoch 14.2
Jacob Ballard 14.2
Dominic Barry 14.2
Jesse Hogan - 14.2

Pretty impressive result for Hogan imo as a very big boy.

Yeah, good effort for someone who is 91kg. I think he is the heavies on the list. Siggins is pretty big too at 88kgs, but he is a bit taller and stringier than Hogan. Most of the other kids on the list are at least 10kgs lighter than those guys. Notably Clurey, is also pretty big at 193cm and 85kg. So massive effort from him too.

Dominic Barry has tested really well too. Impressive that he was in the top 10 for repeat sprints and vertical leap, and also the beep test. The heat probably went in his favour yesterday being that he is from the NT, but still he has a good combination of endurance and burst attributes. He weighs 78kgs and is 183cms tall. So good effort.

The only other guy to manage a top ten in endurance and burst tests was Joshua Kelly (correct me if I missed someone). He is very light though, but I think he is a year younger than the other guys. Only weighs 69kgs. He got top 5 on repeat sprints and the beep test. Neither of those guys went top ten in the 20m sprint. I think that shows how rare it would be for someone to be elite at both endurance and sprints at any one point.
