2011 Round 19 vs Fremantle
Great win by the boys over in WA in the wet. Cyril started off like a house on fire with two early goals to set up the Hawks win but faded out during the game.
The Hawks are slowly easing Rioli back in and limiting his game time which showed on the weekend with him only being on the ground for 76% of the time. Even with a lower TOG, Cyril is still impacting games which showed in his SuperCoach ranking of 110.

Rioli reeled in
HAWTHORN will look to limit Cyril Rioli's game time for the remainder of the season as coach Alastair Clarkson continues to search for the perfect position for his star...

2011 Round 20 vs North Melbourne
Another hard slog in the wet but the boys managed to scrap through giving us all a big scare late in the final term.
Overall a solid game by Cyril with some magic moments that we have come to expect from the champ but generally he struggled for the day being heavily tagged by Brady Rawlings. Rioli still contributed a goal for the day taking his season total to 19. The Hawks are still slowly increasing his game time, this week TOG was 84% compared to last weeks 76%.

Cyril was simply brilliant on the weekend in the Hawks 165 smashing of Port. It was a day of personal bests for Junior with a career high 6 goal haul, 4 of those when the game was to be won in the opening term. To compliment his attaching game he also showed his defense side with another PB of 12 tackles for the game. What a suberb effort.

A good article in the Herald Sun the other day about Cyril's pay packet and what he is really worth.

Cyril Rioli a bargain for the Hawks
HAWTHORN last month quietly announced Cyril Rioli had signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2014.

Nobody is going to fess up on the size of Rioli's pay packet, but you can bet it was a bargain for the bean counters at the Hawks.

Given the salary cap restraints and the cash splurged on Lance Franklin, Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell, you would think Rioli will earn no more than $400,000- $450,000 a season when the deal peaks in its final two years.

It seems a lot for a 22-year-old, but the month of football Rioli has strung together since he re-signed has been extraordinary.

On the open market, Rioli could write his own ticket...

2011 Round 22 vs Carlton
Excellent win by the boys to pretty much sew up 3rd spot and a double chance. Cyril was tagged throught the game by Joseph who kept the champ goaless but as Rioli still made a big impact to the game in the first half when the games was there to be one. Nine tackles also showed his pressure when he didn't have the ball.

Cyril is one of 8 hawk players that will miss the game against Gold Coast. The Hawks have decided to rest their stars to ensure they are ready for the big first final vs Geelong.

Rioli's exclusion from the GC game was no surprise as the Hawks are playing it very safe with him after he was subbed off last week against the dogs with a knock to his calf.

The 7 other stars missing are -

2011 1st Qualifying Final vs Geelong
It wasn't a good night for the Hawks or Cyril against the Cats. After scoring the first goal of the match, Junior Boy was hardly seen for the rest of the match being well contained by Enright. It was an unusual performance by Cyril, he just couldn't get near the ball and looked out of touch. A very disappointing game in a major final.

2011 Preliminary Final vs Collingwood
It was a heart breaking loss for us Hawk supporters against the Pies. To be leading for most of the night and to have it snatched away was extremely frustrating and disappointing. We were so close to another Grand final appearance.

It was a pretty solid game from Cyril on the night. He contributed one goal in the third term and setup another goal assist. Rioli was influential in getting the ball inside the Hawks forward 50 by contributing a game high 8 entries.

The last play of the game involving Cyril getting tackled from behind just outside the Pies forward 50 will probably be remembered, the Hawks were were down 3 points and needed to score quickly so when Cyril collected the ball and looked up field to find a target unfortunately all our players were behind him. Cyril tried his usual ducking and weaving but even the champ couldn't hold off long enough for a Hawk player to persent and got tackled from behind and holding the ball. It wasn't Cyril's fault but just one of those moments were all the Hawks were trying to get the ball but had no one in our forward line.

Season Summary

Overall it was a pretty good 2011 season by Cyril when he could get on the field. Unfortunately he missed six games in the season with hamstring related injuries or being rested which really effected the Hawks.

Due to these injuries the Hawks managed his game time so he spent less time on the ground than previous years (59% avg compared to around 80% in his last 3 years). They also limited his progress into the midfield and Rioli spent more time around the forward line. This was not a bad thing as Cyril recorded a career best 29 goals for the season

Other interesting stats for Junior Boy in 2011 was his AFL ranking of -

Ranked 1st in Goal Assists Per Game with 1.5 per game
Ranked 3rd in Total Goal Assists with 29 only 4 behind the leader Judd with 33
Ranked 11th in Goals Contributed Per Game with avg 3.0 behind Buddy again on 4.4
Ranked 16th in Total Goals Contributed with 58, leader Buddy Franklin on 98

Overall it was a pretty good 2011 season by Cyril when he could get on the field however he did miss six games in the season due to hamstring related injuries or being rested which really affected the Hawks.

Due to these injuries the Hawks were forced to manage Cyril’s game time resulting in less time on the ground than previous years (59% avg compared to around 80% in his previous 3 years). This limited game time contributed to some lower overall stat numbers in 2011 but when Cyril was on the ground he usually made the most of his disposals with a high 71% disposal effective percentage.

One of the things Hawks fans were really hoping from Cyril in 2011 was more time in the midfield, unfortunately due to his hamstring problems his progress to the midfield was limited and Rioli had to spend more time around the forward line. This was not a bad thing as Cyril recorded a career best 29 goals for the season.

Hopefully in 2012 Cyril can put together an injury free year and cement himself as one of the premier midfielders in the comp.

Other interesting stats for Junior Boy in 2011 was his AFL ranking of -

Ranked 1st in Goal Assists Per Game with 1.5 per game
Ranked 3rd in Total Goal Assists with 29 only 4 behind the leader Judd with 33

Here's a good articles about Cyril and his good pre season.

It will be good to see Rioli play more in the midfield this year as he is so damaging when he is around the ball. Just hope the extra workload doesn't effect his hammys.

It's great to have footy back and also to start the season on a high note and beat the Pies.

Regarding Rioli's game, what a great first half by the champ. Cyril kept the Hawks in the game in an outstanding performance that was special to watch. It was Rioli's defensive pressure that really stood out. He also took a serious contender for Mark of the Year. http://aflfootballimages.tumblr.com/post/20166941544/hawthorn-vs-collingwood

Overall a excellent season opener for Cyril, if we can get him to play the full season and put in games like this then the Hawks will be hard to beat.

Another devastating loss for the Hawks to go down by 2 points to the Cats. Once again the Hawks failed to capitalise on a good lead (18pts) at three qtr time to be over run in the last qtr. Very disappointing result from a hard fought game.

Like last week against the Pies, Cyril had a good game and was named as one of the Hawks best but as is becoming a bit too common he is only producing his best in short bursts. Rioli had a quiet first half but electrified the crowd with a brilliant 3rd qtr kicking 2 goals and setting up the Hawks with a good lead at 3 qtr time. Cyril unfortunately didn't contribute much in the last qtr and the Hawks went down to the Cats.

Great win by the Mighty Hawks against the Crows which was one of the three teams last year to beat us. After a hard fought game against the Cats on Easter Monday, there was always a concern they might come out flat but they played well and comfortably defeated the Crows by 56 points.

Cyril struggled to get in the game this week playing against the tight checking defender Michael Doughty, he still managed to kick 2 goals but was down on his regular game. In a incident right on half time, Cyril looked to have tweaked his knee which sent a chill through our supporters but he played out the game but you could tell he was slightly hampered in his movement. Hopefully he is fine for next week.

Another close game and another disappoint loss to the Hawks. It was a hard fought game between to good teams that both struggled to kick goals.

Cyril once again really struggled to get into the game for the first 3 qtrs however his efforts in the final qtr almost won the Hawks the game. With the Hawks about 20 points down with about 10 minutes to go Cyril jumpstarted the Hawks fight back with a magic goal he dribbled from a tight angle in the forward pocket. A few minutes later Rioli kicked his second goal but unfortunately even with the late charge the Hawks lost by 5 points.

Rioli's form over the last couple of weeks has been disappointing but he is still contributing on the score board with his 2 goals every week. We just need him to get the ball more.

Article in the Sunday Herald Sun on Cyril

Outer Sight: Why Cyril Rioli needs to turn his highlights reel into a feature-length film
Anyone who saw him dazzle Harry O'Brien in Round 1 and almost resuscitate Hawthorn when it appeared gone against West Coast last week will vouch for it.

He's not yet 23, but Rioli has a highlights reel that any AFL footballer would be content to roll on high rotation on their DVD.

But, as sublime as he is, and as damaging as his cameos can be, we'd simply love to see more of it....

The Hawks were pretty ordinary in the second half against the swans, after a very good start which saw them skip to a 20 point lead after at half time they fell in a hole and went down by 37 points to the Swans.

Cyril's game against the Swans wasn't that bad, he has been struggling this year with consistancy but has been contributing each week on the score board. Like most of his team mates Rioli was quieter in the second half.

2012 Round 6 vs St. Kilda
After a week where the Hawks were rightfully bashed by the media with their poor performance against Sydney, Hawthorn fought back hard and defeated the Saints by 35 points. It was a close game for 3 qtrs but in the last the Hawks powered away to record a much need win.

What a great game by the little champ. Cyril was electric on Saturday night playing a best on field performance to win the Silk-Miller medal and win for his uncle Sibby Rioli that passed away last week with a heat attack.

Rioli was the match winner for the Hawks kicking six goals to 3 qtr time to keep the Hawks ahead before they comfortably won the last qtr. It was a great 4 qtr performance by Cyril to answer his critics that have been asking for a more consistent game.

It think Cyril's best position for the Hawks is as a small forward so it was no coincidence that due to Cyril playing most of the game in the forward half that he was able to influence the game the way he did. A forward line of Cyril, Buddy and Roughy is formidable and hopefully the Hawks try and keep that structure instead of playing them as midfielders.

Well done Cyril on your best a field performance during a very hard week with Sibby passing away.

Rioli's inspiration
HAWTHORN star Cyril Rioli has dedicated his brilliant six-goal effort against St Kilda to the memory of his uncle, who passed away just three days before Saturday night's clash...

In a scrappy game the Hawks did enough to comfortable win by 66 points without playing particularly well.

Cyril this week was fairly quiet after his best on field performance against the Saints. Consistency is what we need now from the champ. His best is right up there with the best in the comp but the gap between his quiet days and his best is too large.

Added a new stat this week, Time on Ground. With Cyril's history with hamstrings the Hawks seem to be using Rioli spariingly on the ground, it will be interesting to monitor his TOG during the season.

2012 Round 8 vs Fremantle
A very good win by the Hawks down in Tassie. Our 8 goal second quarter blew them away and for most parts of the game the Hawks controlled the contest for a comfortable win.

Rioli was back to his best again this week with his forward pressure a highlight for the game. Even though they haven't been credited with goal assists, two goals were directly scored due to Cyril's last minute tackles on the Freo defenders that resulted in the ball spilling out and the Hawks swooping for goals.

A trend that is becoming quite obvious is that Cyril doesn't need to rack up many possessions to have a large influence on the game and the percentage of his contested possessions to total disposals has always been high. Like Paddy Dangerfield from Adelaide, if Cyril can also learn to get the cheaper outside possessions then he could take his game to a whole new dimension.

Not much postive to say about this game, the Tiger were too good. Very disappointing loss.

Cyril struggled for the day but he wasn't alone on that front. He still managed to kick 2 goals.

2012 Round 10 vs North Melbourne
Great game by the Hawks down in Tassie lead by Buddy Franklin's 13 goal effort. The Hawks smashed the Kangas to win by 115 points.

Cyril played a bit more time up the ground which resulted in him contributing 8 inside 50's for the match, he also added another 2 goals to take his season tally to 22. Rioli's Time on ground is disappointing with him only 73% on the field, only two other Hawks had less TOG and they both were subs. We need to get Cyril on the ground and involved more.
