Nup.. considering that Boomer has three sides of his right side of his right boot Higgins is that polished rare type of player who can more than compliment the North midfield because he can go long and make some acute snap shots at goal with either foot. Think a more quicker and more versatile version of Sam Mitchell and can be VERY damaging when fit. Runs all day kinda player in the Dal Santo mould.

If Higgins can have that career season, I can guarantee you that you won't miss Levi Greenwood.
Look I like Higgins and I think he's a good pick up but to say he's at all like Sam Mitchell is wide of the mark. Mitchell is a significant class above.

I agree Sam Mitchell is a significant class above considering he has been consistent, played in a SUCCESSFUL TEAM!! and has been lucky with injuries (long term) but you can't deny Higgins versatility.

I'm letting myself get carried away with what Higgins can offer this season, regardless of his slightly above average injury history he has such a unique offering as a footballer. With one of the better midfields in the competition, if he can play 18+ games I see him having a serious impact at half forward, rotating through the middle with Harvey.

Exactly right.

He'll be given free reign as attention needs to be paid to Boomer, Dal, Wells and Swallow.

This will be the best midfield he has played with.

They had a pretty handy midfield from '08-'10 (Higgins included).

I'm also potentially getting a bit too excited about him. Waite too.

Swallow, Cunners, Wells, Dal, Boomer.

That's pretty ******* good.

They went alright with West, Cooney, Griffen, Boyd, Cross and Aker.

I do love our midfield. They've still got a bit of work to do, though. An elite midfield wouldn't have the poor I50 numbers we have.

At his best I think he can offer a lot of what Shannon Grant did in his better years, some statistical comparisons:

Shaun Higgins (Age: Ave. Disposals/Goals)
23: 21.1/1.6
24: 20.2/1.0
25: 21.0/0.7
26: 18.0/1.2
Career: 18.1/1.0

Shannon Grant
(Age: Ave. Disposals/Goals)
22: 20.5/1.5
24: 24.0/1.3
26: 22.3/1.1
28: 18.7/1.7
Career: 18.3/1.2

yes v good Quantitative analysis Winter
but the issue is the Qualitative
Average stats don't mean much if all the goals are kicked v the bottom sides and the player goes missing in the big games
Shagger played good when it mattered, very much a 1 touch specialist who took his opportunities
If Higgins gets close to wot NDS did for us last yr, and I thought he was Agrade apart from a bit of wimpiness and being overly clever here and there,if Higgins can bring a bit more composure under pressure then that will improve the team

Higgins ready to make impact at North Melbourne after strong pre-season

NORTH Melbourne recruit Shaun Higgins is confident his best football still lies ahead of him as he savours a fresh start at the Kangaroos.

Higgins said he felt he had been given a “new lease on life” after joining the Roos in last year’s free agency period after nine years at the Western Bulldogs.

The 26-year-old managed 129 games during that time at the Kennel, with a frustrating run of injuries, including a navicular fracture in 2013, taking their toll on his career so far.

But Higgins said his body was keeping up its end of the bargain and he was ready to deliver for his new team after a strong pre-season.

“I’m feeling really good and definitely feel like my best footy is in front of me,’’ Higgins said at the Kangaroos’ community camp in Werribee on Thursday.

[snip]

Higgins said it was not until the end of last season he decided he needed a change of scenery, but knew straight away after speaking to North it was the club he wanted to join. :thumbsu:

“Once I got to the end of the year and weighed up all my options and where I was at ... I felt like I needed a fresh start,’’ Higgins said.

“From the get go that I met with North Melbourne, I felt like that was where I needed to be and I’m rapt that everything got done and the result is what it is now.’’ :thumbsu:

So, I wonder if the same people pissed off at Greenwood are also pissed off at Higgins for leaving his club. Or Dal Santo. Or Waite. :D

I get you, there is a big difference between delivering 129 games over almost a decade and just over half that though. Rightly or wrongly the expectation was that Greenwood was starting to repay the faith for the first time.

Let's give him a few games and see how he goes wearing our jumper. I can't form an opinion on any player who has had to play for that pathetic club who haven't had a decent forward for 30 years.

He is nowhere near the player Mitchell is, but there is no reason why he can't significantly improve on what he has brought to the table in his career so far.

Agree completely. I've got a mate that's a Dogs supporter (poor bloke) and he was really disappointed when Higgins left. He said that he was one of their best when they were a good side and was one of their better finals players.

I have no doubt Higgins can play but he needs to start doing it more often and hopefully having good players around him (like he did at the Bulldogs in 2007-2010) brings out his best.

To compare him to Sam Mitchell and come out favourably is very strange on two fronts - one, it is completely wrong, and two, they are different players in what they offer.
