Players that averaged over 1.9 goals and 2.5 tackles this season:

Toby Greene
Charlie Cameron
Aaron Naughton

Naughton did it while averaging 1.8 contested marks. He’s pretty unique for a key forward and does a tonne of defensive work in our forward line. I’d love if he kicked 60 every year but he’s already pretty bloody good and critical to our team beyond the 45-50 goals he’s averaged the past 3 years.

Lol the 2.5 tackles are important why?

Here's a better one, players to average over 2 goals per game

That's a lot of forwards ahead of him.

What is his other issue? He has the worst goal kicking conversion of the top 30 average goal kickers this season.

He's never winning a Coleman as a 50% goal kicking converter. His problem is he also has 2 sub 50% conversion seasons in the last 4 years, which is absolute shite.

He's a defender being played out of position imo.

He won't need to win a Coleman, settle into 50 goals or so with the same pressure he has now, Jamarra gets to 50+ as well, Weightman 35 etc...

There might be a forward ahead of him at the club as early as next year. 🤷‍♂️

Well it's hard to say how much buddy's deal influenced others but players who left during his time are

Rohan
Newman
Aliir
Mitchell
Mumford
Nankervis
Dawson
Cameron
Jetta

Just off the top of my head
That seems fairly standard attrition level for most clubs over such a long period. Mitchell definitely the unlucky one.
Tippet's contract was probably a factor in that, too.
The salary cap was about $10-11m in 2016, and even allowing for COLA, those two took up around 20%.

You'd have to say the Buddy deal was a pretty good one, though, considering the GFs the Swans reached in that time.

Right? The Swans have bags of cash. They just need a marketable forward to throw it at. Still staggered Naughton turned them down.

Cash comes with responsibility. You’re putting a HUGE target on your back with that sort of deal, even at the Swans. A few years of underperformance and you’re doomed to 7-8 years of being public enemy #1, taking all the money and contributing little.

It’s fine for somebody at Buddy’s level who has already proven they’re beyond good enough, for a relatively unproven player like Naughton it’s putting all sorts of pressure on yourself. Tom Boyd is a cautionary tale.

He’s landed himself an amazing deal at his current club where the expectations are already set.

Naughton is well proven i would of thought.

Would not be surprised if we fished around JUH

Players on a contract of that length can get comfortable too and drop off. Travis Cloke and Harry Taylor readily come to mind.

I think people (especially Cornes) need to realise that if we didn’t give up a large lengthy contract then multiple other clubs would do so instead.

We’re not in the business of being a feeder club for gun 23 y/o KPFs because of a risk averse mentality.
Cornes is a professional wind up merchant, take it with a grain of salt

You can’t actually be this thick.

I don't know why Naughton is so heavily scrutinized. I'd take him any day of the week. Signing him for 8 years is great by the Doggies.
Scrutinised by supporters of clubs who missed out on him.

You know: "would be great to pick up a gun like him..."

...becomes ''glad we didn't get him. Just an average player".

Every.Time. 😁

He'd just need to kick straight
