AFL's rubbery white shorts policy

Depends who they were playing. Its probably not effective against all teams hence they'd still need the silver combo from time to time. The other option was the skinny sash but Bombers fans hated that too.
Exactly who wouldn't the red work against when they can't use their black? Saying that red is 'dark' and wont work makes absolutely zero sense to me.

If clubs were smart they'd come up with a clash jumper that a) works as a clash jumper and b) looks good and thus add to their tradition and heritage. Instead they try and make the bloody thing look as much like their home jumper as possible and end up with a jumper that a) doesn't work as a clash jumper and b) looks shithouse that they end up changing every couple of years.

That fat sash monstrosity that Essendon used to wear made a mockery of their traditional jumper and looked ridiculous, but because it was technically a red sash on black that made it fine and somehow didn't mess with their heritage

You might not have liked it, who cares? It worked for us.

Wasn't a mockery of anything

It was ugly and looked ridiculous. The only thing that 'worked' about it was that you could pretend it was traditional.

Explain to me how red is dark, but navy blue or black isn't.

Not sure why Essendons fat sash and red shorts doesnt get used if thats what you mean. Its a perfectly good clash outfit against any dark coloured home team, as long as that home team doesnt have a large percentage of red in their outfits.

I'm assuming thats why they have gone for silver because it ticks all the boxes against all opponents, not just most of them.

We did that some other club bitched and so now we've got the crappier clash jumper.

Silver looks horrible on a football jumper, especially Essendon's.

It prevents a clash. Aesthetics runs a very distant second in order of priorities. Hats off to Essendon, since they are probably now the 'big, traditional' club that is embracing pretty basic concepts of sports uniforms, just as teams like Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond recently seem to not want to wear their clashes (or not come up with anything remotely approaching an acceptable clash, in Richmond's case), unless forced to at gunpoint.

We had to ditch the fat sash because the AFL insisted that all games had to be "dark vs light". And apparently, red is dark, like our black.

I've posted numerous examples of their dark vs light policy. Collingwood and Carlton may as well be wearing the same jumper.

But you can't wear red against St Kilda apparently

The dark vs light policy again

Collingwood's home jumper with white shorts makes the jumper look whiter/lighter than what it really is. Probably the logic used. It doesn't look THAT bad really, when compared to other combinations.

My beef is that when North and Geelong are the home side, they wear the blue shorts, while teams such as Port, Bulldogs and Adelaide have to wear the white shorts simply because they are classified as "away". It shouldn't be like that anymore, especially considering when you have some teams that have "home" games interstate now - look at Hawthorn and North Melbourne. St Kilda are now having one or two games over in NZ, and Port used to have one or two games in Darwin (although I think they were the away side).

Presentation wise, have North Melbourne in a predominantly white jumper with dark shorts, vs a team with a predominantly dark jumper (Port for example), with white shorts does not look good at all. Having North in the white shorts, and Port in their dark (black) shorts, would look 1001% better not only presentation wise but also viewing wise on TV.

When Geelong play Carlton as the home side as well, they where navy shorts whilst Carlton have white shorts with their home jumper, despite Geelongs home jumper being mainly white and Carltons being what, 90% navy? Looks crap. Swap the shorts over, and again, the presentation looks 1001 times better.

It is teams like Collingwood and their club presidents *cough* Eddie *cough* however that f**k it up for the competition when they cry out "TRADITION!!" and "HERITAGE" all the time.

Tradition and Heritage were given less thought when teams had to come up with Clash jumpers.

Tradition and Heritage were thrown out when Collingwood made their home jumper of 100 years their clash jumper, and made their previously designated away jumper, their home jumper.

Because screw logic.

Yeah but Gold Coast are almost like Sydney, just replace the white with yellow/gold.

I think the above looks fine given that the backs are black for St Kilda and Red for Gold Coast.

No you just can't wear red and black with white numbers. If Essendon wore Red with a Black sash they probably wouldn't have a problem against St Kilda.

Collingwoods clash strip is fine. It's almost all white.

They just never wear it, because the AFL don't enforce the rules.

Exactly.

While we're at it, haven't seen North's inverse away/clash recently, normally they wear it Away vs Sydney, they didn't wear it at the SCG this year. Maybe they only save it for Geelong these days.

Our clash should be a white jumper with a red MFC monogram and blue numbers. Simple, honours the Dees.

My preference would be to do what West Coast does.

Traditional red yoke and navy blue - HOME

Navy yoke and red OR red yoke and royal blue - AWAY

White with monogram - WHITE

Exactly.

Dont know why we didnt wear it against Sydney. We made it our interstate jumper in 2012 but wore the white. We won so im taking it as an omen.

Not doing a good job at it, not even remotely. The inconsistency is ridiculous (deeming we clash with GC but Carlton don't clash with Footscray).

The AFL should copy the Premier League when it comes to clashes

It may come as a surprise to the ignorant, but the rules regarding match-day strips are more strict and consistent in the EPL than the patchwork policy-on-the-fly at play in the AFL.

Basically.....and in my own words.

1. Each club must register a primary uniform (home kit). This is a full uniform, not just the shirt.

2. Each club must register a secondary uniform (away kit) which is different from its home kit.

3. Each club must wear its home kit every match.

4. In the event the home kits of both match-day clubs are identical, similar or may cause confusion, the visiting club is directed to wear a home kit of change shorts and/or socks, or its away kit to reduce the similarities.

5. Clubs can choose to wear its away kit in a maximum of (eight) 8 matches (including matches it is directed to use it in point 4).

6. Any changes or special requests to the above must be made on application to the EPL.

So as you can see, clubs can use an alternate uniform a maximum of 8 matches of the 38 home and away matches in the league. It's hardly the free-for-all and guessing game most folks think, and seems to occur in the AFL.
