This is NOT a McCartney thread, even if assistants are theoretically hired and fired with a fair input from the senior coach...

Anyway, Monty has been there for a while, and judging by tv footage, seems to have a bit to say in the coaching box. Shannon Grant seems to sit there looking like Val Kilmer, Bubba looks worried a lot, and Kingy seems fairly happy. That's what it looks like to me from the outside, but does anyone know if they are performing up to scratch, if they are capable in their roles, and if we're likely to move any of them on at the end of the season?
I'm sure lots of people will reply with opinions, which if they're like mine, based on tv footage, are next to useless, but fire away.
However, I would be much more interested if anyone has any knowledge, even if indirect, of how we shape up in support crew for McCartney.
Also, assuming the Scarlett/Mooney input has helped the imrpovement in Jones and Roughy this year, should we try and offer one/both a bigger role? (We had Silvagni helping out Lake and other defenders in a part-time capacity years ago, and could have signed him on permanently, but missed our chance.)

I think Smith doing a good job with our backs, Talia, JJ and the like. But who ever coaches our forwards (I think its Grant) might need to be moved on.

I think we need to add a more experienced tactical/2nd in charge type. Eade would be perfect, but I know it woukd never happen. I'd be looking at a Mark Harvey, Mark Williams, Bomber Thompson, Mark Neeld, Alan Richardson etc. I just think we need to add a bit more tactical nous and get some more experience in there, when you look its a fairly inexperienced coaching panel. I also hope we have the funds to put Scarlett on full time, I think if we can keep him around for at least another 2 years, it will work wonders for the club for the next 10-15 years. Maybe try get a Dermett Brereton and/or Peter Daicos on casual positions. Just think we could do with some left field (but well read) ideas.

I don't think it's a funds thing, he only wanted a part time role, same as Mooney as they have other commitments, it was more a dipping toes in water type role to see if that's what they wanted to do moving forward. Hopefully it is what he wants as him working as full time defenders coach would be good.

If Neil Craig doesn't get the Melbourne job I'd like to see him over our way. It's of course possible he won't apply for it and retained as a Melbourne coach anyway.

I'm sure there are many more assistant coaches around that I'm not aware of who are very capable but I too would like to see a change in this department. Who to go and who to come in I can't answer and just have to trust that club knows what it's doing.

Yeah I know that, I was more so wondering if we had the funds to hire another full-time coach. I assume we would but there would be some doubt. I'm guessing a full time assistant would make around $150,000 a year, that money has to come from somewhere.

I wouldn't mind Dean Laidley as our tactician coach or whatever role Monty's is called. I've always rated Laidley high tactically. As for our other coaches. Smith would surely have another year on his contract after just being promoted. I have no time for Grant, perhaps promote Ash Hansen as our forward coach. While I don't mind Steven King, could we do better then him?

its a hard question.... imagine trying to analayze our midfield coach!

* Win contested footy - tick

* Spread and Ball carrying ability - X

* Disposal efficiency of core midfield group - X

However - Is it the coaches fault or the coach not having the right type of player to complete his plans and achieve his KPI's ??

Do we have a ruck coach? Or does the midfield coach do ruck men as well? Is Minson's dominance this year due to the efforts of the ruck coach or just Minson's own experience?

Also agree that a tactical assistant would be a benefit .

I'm pretty sure there is a huge range in assistant pay and $150k would be at the bottom end of the scale.

Don't think we have a specialised one, given King is midfield coach and he was a ruckman, he does that role too I assume

Just been having a look at it, average pay for assistant coaches is $125,000 a year. A bit lower than I thought. But then you have directors of coaching/whatever ever name they give to the 2nd in charge (Bomber, Eade etc) who I don't think are included in that average and the 2IC types would be on at least $350,000 a year.

I just really really don't like Shannon grant. Hated him as a player (put a massive price on his head before the draft - knob). The way he sets up our zone kick-out defence is a joke. Almost impossible to judge assistant coaches though, so ill put that caveat on it, but something about that guy just doesn't impress me at all.

This is really off topic, but when he was drafted, a member of his family was on some reality tv show about weddings, and he was part of the filming (was in the bridal party or something). The draft featured in the show, and the whole family was hoping he would be drafted by us (as in Footscray), and were all fairly p*ssed off that Sydney got him. (And no, I don't watch much reality tv, but my wife and sister-in-law were right into the show at the time and pointed out to me that the draft was involved). Anyway, I think that either he or some of his family were Dogs supporters.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Yes, the ruck coach one is interesting, as we have had specialist ruck coaches for many years (Dempsey, Barnes, Sam Newman at one stage (really!), and others whose names escape me atm).

When Wheeler was coach, he actually got Dempsey, Quinlan, Bisset and Gordon Casey in as specialist coaches, but this was the days before a mob of assistants in the box.

Ash Hansen is very impressive when speaking in the media, but I wonder how that translates to imparting knowledge to players?

Depends if you view the coach as having overall say in recruiting. If so you yes, then he takes part of the blame.

Sorry to bump an oldish thread but I'd love to see us try and dislodge David King from his media commitments to come into a sort of 'strategic analyst' role. Very, very smart man who knows the game incredibly well. Wouldn't be a bad assistant to Macca I reckon, as a bit of a 'game-day' specialist.

Personally, if I had to revamp the whole panel, Dean Laidley as Senior Assistant, Mark Neeld as defensive coach, Scott West as midfield coach, Ash Hansen as forward coach, Steven King as ruck coach, and I wouldn't mind snaring a decent high performance manager like Misson or Burgess (won't happen) now that Lowe is General Manager of Football.

I think Macca's done very well, and while we're expanding the resources he has as we have been more recently, we should definitely be going after the highly rated assistants and former senior coaches to support him.

Cameron Ling. 3 time premiership player. 2 time premiership captain? Would love nothing more than to see this guy crafting our young midfield. Although there's not much wrong with their development so far. Or even in a role similar to Scarlett and Mooney.
Would like to see Scarlett in particular continue in his role. And Mooney or similar working closely with Grant, Jones and Stringer, etc.
Agree with the comments re David King. Very savvy customer.

Tremendous - agree with all of the above and as I have mentioned before, I also have a feeling that Darren Milburn has a fair bit to offer as well. PLS , PLs go after Cameron Ling, has a great feel for and knowledge of the game !! When King and Ling speak , they ooze knowledge and feel, quite classy.

Would leave Mark Neeld to join his ex boss at Karlton !!!

Highly doubt you'd be able to drag king away from his media career. Cash would be too good and its the perfect "all care, no responsibility" position.

Whoever we get seriously needs to address our kick-in defence and our kick outs as well. Opposition teams waltz out of our forward line after we kick a point, and the best we can hope for is a long kick to a contest. Has to be fixed in the off-season.

Also our core skills. Not just kicking. But our one grab marking, basic hand balling, picking the ball up etc are all below afl standard. Must get coaches in who can address these issues. Small steps that would help our game day performances enormously.

So what role are we expecting to see Gia in first up? And has anyone said that it will be at the dogs yet? Don't want to lose him.
