Buddy out of our forward line for Hale

Id say the 'message' from the hawks is they no longer carry specialist ruckmen. One at the most

The only pure rucks are Taylor (who will retire if OOC and Bailey - who still has a question mark over him re:dodgy knees)

It is starting to look like the Collingwood forward model that is being forced by the new interchange rule meaning teams must have a resting ruckman in the forward line so the midfield rotations can continue. Renouf or Bailey will be the number one ruck, both will have to add goal kicking to their repetoir. Franklin and Roughy will rotate between Full forward and Centre Half Forward. Hopefully we can get Josh Hill as a forward pocket, and Osborne and Cyril lurking on the forward flanks this year with dare I say it some structure up front to work with.

What Hales recruitment will mean is that Simon Taylor may likely be delisted.

The percieved lack of interest in a key defender appears as though they are either confident of landing Matt Watson in the draft or HFC think Lisle and Schoe are ready to step up. Other clubs will play the second ruck up forward which means that Lisle should definitely get a gig in 2011.

Could most of the competition move to having abothe a forward and a back who can ruck - to work with the new bench and cover for the other team doing the same thing. both players only getting rest when their outfield opponent does.

If so what happens at centre bounces ?

Will both teams take a risk and leave the forward ruck alone in their back line ?

If Hale and Roughy are forward and Buddy is within 70m of goals then he will kick goal of the year every week.

If Roughy/Buddy/Hale are all within 60m of goals, who does the number one defender go to??

I'm excited.

I like it. Hale can do a few things Buddy can't. Take a high ball overhead is one of them. Buddy is a much better player on the move and that is where he should be next year. Making a complete nuisance of himself running around like a headless chook in the forward third of the ground.

If the Hawks get themselves into a rut (like half of this year) and resort to banging it in on top of the forwards heads, I would rather Hale is underneath that ball than Buddy.

Now, if recruiting Hale means we never see Rough in the ruck again I am happy. If it means we never see Hodge in the ruck again I am happy. And it means I never have to read another thread about Peterson being our next ruckman again I am happy.

Regarding giving away a pick in the 20's for him, in the last 10 years the Hawks have drafted the following players with picks in the 20's; Daniel Elstone, Harry Miller, Thomas Murphy, Matthew Little, Beau Muston, Brent Renouf and Brendan Whitecross. Dont think we lose much swapping any of those for Hale if that was the alternative. I think I would be happy to swap more than half of our picks below 20 but that is another story.

I like the idea of having a ruckman who can rest up fwd.
Gives us a lot more options at selection.

Gee some people talk some absolute crap on this forum.

What are you the coach?? Stop being so old school. Clarko will play Buddy, Hale, Rough, whoever, where he thinks they can help the team win. Notice I said TEAM!!!

2011 is a unknown. Our biggest problem we need to fix, is not our playing list, its ATTITUDE!! We can match the best, just have to be more consistant.

Please get your hand off it.

Our biggest problem is an abysmal gameplan that continually played people out of position this year.

i.e. Buddy.
i.e. Roughy.
i.e. Campbell Brown.

Buddy is a 100+ goal kicker.
Roughy is a potential 100+ goal kicker.

Yet we play a game style similar to St. Kilda when we should be playing a game style similar to Collingwood ... i.e. get the ball forward, get it forward fast and give our tall timber a chance.

Attitude didn't lose St. Kilda the premiership, their gameplan did.

seriously... i think his addition would be good for the side. A side with very few experienced ruckman and tall players. Added that HALE can play forward as well.. i think its a good move to go for him. What i didn't like was giving away compo pick for him!

He isn't worth that... but... when you need a certain player... the price increases dramatically

TBH, I think if we can solve our pace issue, we'll solve the issue of having to drag our forwardline up the ground as much and will see some pretty big bags of goals between Franko, Roughy and Hale.

You rotate Hale in and out of the forward line to create mismatches. If opposition clubs try to compensate by switching a key defender on to Hale then Hale drags them away from the goal square and makes room for Roughead with a smaller opponent. If Hale gets a smaller defender, then you plonk him in the goal square.

If teams load up with 3 key defenders to play the Hawks, then Hale plays ruck and the Hawks take advantage with a smaller quicker player.

I can't see Hale having any real detrimental effect on Franklins game at all. Roughead is going to be the one that benefits mostly from Hales inclusion, along with the Hawks onballers.

I think the Hale doubters will be tempering their comments by mid 2011.

Spot on, Hale creates mismatches this is why we got him.

As a ruck who can go forward, where other teams will have to play a decent back on him.

So Jolly, Mitch Clark etc will have to run down and pick him up in defence when need be and cannot as attacking.

He is only a decent tap ruckman, something we do not have many of.

Bailey becoming a player would be a miracle, and everyone hopes it may happen, and Taylor is not a great ruckman, Skipper/Hale could be used to back-up Renouf, or play the supersub role.

We paid slightly overs for him, but what use is a pick 19,20,21 draft pick in 2012, the player they might get then will be good in what 2015,

The club is going for now and good on them

So, if these new interchange rules are suposedly going to force a resting ruckman to the forward line to enable midfield rotations to continue, who do we have to play on these resting ruckmen?

Simon Taylor may be our only option with the height to compete against said resting ruckmen...

So, with Renouf, Hale and Taylor in the team, who goes to Box Hill??:D

Haven't read the whole thread but...Hale will be a ruckman who pinch hits forward WITH Bud and Rough. Also, if Bud goes for a run up the ground, Hale goes forward for a while - simple as that really. Massive over-reaction.

hes a ruckman you idiots. He will be playing mostly in the ruck, whilst pinch hitting up forward. We needed to improve our ruck stocks desperately and we just have. Its a good move.

I am not a Hale fan.
However its obvious as the above post.
Hale = versatility in match ups.
hale = ruck man (skipper is short)
Hale = Skipper potential chb (His field kicking and run is excellent for a tall)
Hale = Buddy can be released into midfield/wing when we want.
Hale = can kick straight and is a good grab...so the get out of jail hail mary when the chips are down option is on the table.

I have to say its a good choice for HFC.
Hale = Bargain.
Hale = Taylor at box hill hawks..thank god.

Could Renouf play a bit of CHB ?
Hale will also be guarantee for Roughy, Buddy or Rucks being injured

If Clarkson thinks that Hale and Roughead are going to kick goals to win us a flag, I would be stunned. Don't believe everything you hear. Buddy does his best work up forward and Clarkson would have lost the plot completely to take him out of there

Exactly and well put. A lot of idiots in this thread.

I think this is a good deal for us, we now have a ruckman who is versatile. He will not be a permanent fixture in the forward line and Buddy will not be a permanent fixture out of it.

So many people making angry knee-jerk reactions to rumour, this board can be so s**t at times.

I'd imagine Renouf and Skipper will be training to improve their running endurance for next season.

And as I mentioned before - three talls in the forward line is OK

BUDDY will be a permanent forward..make no mistake about it! Hale will play the role of the big target inside F50.

ROUGHY is going to do alot of defensive work over Summer and expect to start seeing him in the back half of the ground in 2011 :thumbsu: mark it down

FB: Gilham - Gibson - Hill
HB: Goo - Roughead - Stratton
Ce: Young - Hodge - Bateman
HF: Lewis - Franklin - Burgoyne
FF: Rioli - Hale - Osborne

Ru: Renouf
RR: Mitchell
Ro: Sewell

I/C: Birchall, Ellis, Peterson + Whitecross

When are people going to stop saying that Roughead should go to CHB. The bloke had an average year but still kicked 50+ goals yet you want to send him to defence?? If he improved by 15-20% which he should as he matures he will kick 65-75 goals like he did in 08! and why do we think he will be able to hold down CHB when he has never played there before (played his first 2 seasons as the 3rd tall that is all)?????

IMHO Hale was brought into the side to play 50/50 fwd/ruck. I believe he will start at full-forward along side Rough with Buddy roaming on a flank. Buddy will roam up the ground like he does and drift into the forward line playing a Richo role (like he did at various times this year) and will still kick his 4-5 goals a game. At the 10-12 minute mark of each quarter Hale will be moved into the centre to give Renouf a break and ruck for 10-15 minutes. When hail is rucking Buddy is moved deep into the forward line for a rest. Then hale is moved back to the goal square for the last 8-10 minutes bringing on a refreshed Renouf to ruck the last part of the quarter.

Next year you cannot afford to have 2 rucks in your side unless they can be used in another position which is why we got hale who can play forward. This allows us to have 3 runners on the bench with a Sub who can come on if there is an injury. This will make our ruck department so much stronger and also takes some pressure of Roughead and Buddy to kick all of the goals week in week out.

If Hale can kick 35-40 goals for the year and ruck 10-13 minutes of each quarter then I believe we will be on our way to a top 4 position.

We muct get the Hill deal done. I think pick 52 is fair. With Hooper gone and some doubts on Peterson we really lack that bit of flair in the fwd half.

And who knows Fremantle to get the shits with Collingwood and send Tarrant to the draft, pick him up before the Pies and we could have the makings of a premiership side!!

Go the Hawks in 2011:cool:

YOU ARE SILLY! What we will end up with is essentially Renouf and Hale to take the ruck load each week, Hale with the ability to push forward and kick some goals, a Leigh Brown type experiment.

Buddy sometimes does play up the ground and did in 2009 and 2010

Buddy and Rough will continue to spend most their time up forward.

Hale will predominantly play ruck, then push forward to create mismatches. As he is a big lad and a strong mark, I think he can provide a great decoy.

A couple of concerns:
* I hope these guys learn to decoy for each other. I hate it when you see Rough and Buddy leading and jumping for the same ball.

* Hale is not great below his knees. So I think if he does push forward, he will need to push deep to the square.

one less player on the bench morons.

less rotations.

This means that the club needs ruckmen that will be able to play in a variety of roles and not resting on the bench.

If you watched the VFL grand Final, you would notice that Hale is a monster up forward, and was for the Roos also.

Recruiting Hale will allow roughead to go to defense where he is more combfortable (note that roughead often puts himself in defense, and has to be dragged out kicking and screaming)

This in turn add a bit of solidarity in the back line.

Cry foul, say roughead needs to play forward, but i would be more confident with Roughead at CHB/FB and Hale at FF/CHF then having Roughead at CHF/FF and noone of his size in defence
