This is an overhead photo of the Showgrounds in Melbourne since the redevelopment - the oval is gone.
Put it in the middle of the big racetrack to the top right. Just turf the middle and allow the fans to use the facilities around the track. We can have half time horse races to keep the punters entertained.

Now your just speaking BS, that was three or four years ago when there was disputes over teams like Hawthorn and Richmond over how they calculated the membership numbers since then our figures match what the AFL shows our members to be, the AFL announced that we reached 70,000, Id like to see how may members the Hawks would have if they had no flags in 35 years, then again I doubt the Hawks would even exist in that situation.

Tell me how many members Richmond 'announced' last year because it was clearly more than 57641 'members'

...and please don't drag Hawthorn to your level as there has never been a variation between AFL audited numbers and Hawthorn announced numbers

As for Richmond's argument 'if we had 35 years of success we would be much larger' argument (which is pox) the same applies to Hawthorn 1925-1957 with considerable interest. We'd be the biggest sporting club in the country if we weren't a complete joke in the 1925-1957 period ( much like Richmond post 1980) :drunk:

In all honesty, Arden St is perfect for redevelopment.

Vacant site.

No more grandstands.

New underground train station opening 500 meters from the oval (Arden station)

Nearby station at North Melbourne.

Very close to the Freeway.

Only parking would be an issue, but could be hopefully resolved with acquiring one of the concreteworks next door and building a carpark there.

Not sure where you get your info from but I have an idea it may be straight out of your arse, this is from the AFL site earlier this year.

Oh look you have forgotten to add non access members which are counted by both Hawthorn, Richmond all other clubs and the AFL:drunk:

RICHMOND2015 members (so far): 56,329
This time last year: 51,596
2014 members: 66,797
Slogan: Strong and Bold

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-15/the-membership-race

and this is the AFL official numbers from 2014

I know heaps who have picked the Hawks this year as their club support so they have a better chance of getting a grand final ticket.

Haven't read through the thread so not sure if this has been mentioned but the AFL already had their 'own' stadium, Waverley. Why they shut that joint I'll never know. Watching footy under a roof at an over priced stadium is perhaps why so many people are being turned off the game. Now they may build a 'boutique' new stadium???

Awesome. Unfortunately those 'heaps of people' are not supported by objectionable evidence (particularly when Hawthorn only has 4100 AFL club support members)

Still cool story though :)

Try again. Straight from the AFL annual report bro (once the numbers have been vetted by the AFL...

http://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/AFL/Files/Annual Report/2014-AFL-Annual-Report.pdf

Page 42. Not some shotty journalistic work lifted by AFL writers from the Richmond club website (who we can't forget sell Tiger Insider and Pet memberships)

But at least you've got your memories and 'vibe'

Try adding the non access members as these are included in the AFL official totals, all clubs including Hawthorn add these as well, if you hurry you may be able to edit your post and save yourself more embarrassment :$

Non access is pet membership, these were the numbers knocked off Richmond year after year

Which probably explains why despite having 70000 'members' Richmond have bugger all MCG reserve seating

...not compared to Hawthorn and Collingwood anyway who are both subject to major taxation from the AFL

Please stop I'm starting to feel sorry for you, all clubs including Hawthorn and Collingwood have non access memberships and they are all counted in the final membership count, did you not notice in your haste to post that Collingwood are listed with 67,230 access members, Hawthorn 68530 suprising then that both clubs claimed to have over 70,000 members last year, I'm also surprised there were no announcements when Hawthorn became no.1 for memberships, oh that's right it's because you have to add access and non access:eek:

Richmond also has more supporters that hold AFL membership than Hawthorn, I guess those Hawk supporters buying their pets a full membership don't bother getting them the AFL one?

Renegotiate the deals then, no need to build a bloody new stadium to do that.

Well yes, that's the real motive whenever this "debate" happens to surface.

The AFL wants a better deal.

The AFL has absolutely no right to do this. They bought a new place they couldn't afford. But they had to have it.

What right do they have to go back to the investors now and demand a change? They signed up for their return.

The transparent and correct thing for the AFL to do would be to pay a bigger cut and give the clubs a fair deal.

It's just moving money between buckets though - clubs get more, then less in the end of year "equalisation" whacks.

But the AFL doesn't do transparent. Who the * wants to hear about the AFL losing money? PR wise it's much better that the big bad stadium is killing your clubs. It pulls the heartstrings.

So let's see clubs play at Etihad a great ground, no one attends because it's not as good as the mcg, then the few times it's a sellout they bitch about capacity and how it should have been at the mcg. They also bitch about the fact that because the stadium is new it requires higher rents to pay off the debt.

The proposed solution? Build a brand new stadium, which will have higher rents as its new, with less capacity then Etihad, Further from the city and most importantly of all isn't the MCG. Time to check dwaynes water for mercury contamination.

No, no, no. You have it all wrong.

The new stadium will be 'clean'. The govt/AFL will pay for it. Clubs will make a 90% return like they do at Kardinia Park.

Even though the ground will be low spec and isn't the MCG, fans will flock there. Even though the capacity will be <30k there won't be any need for reserved seats and everyone will turn up 5 minutes before the game to buy a $20 GA ticket and the place will run like a charm.

really? the vic government is just going to gift them a third stadium during a time when global economic uncertainly remains?

are they planning to sell of a state asset to pay for it through a fully costed fund where all tenders and bids must come in under that budget?

what do the roughly 3.6 million victorians who don't regularly watch or attend AFL games think of this move?

Kinda defeats the purpose of things like AFL and Medallion Club membership, doesn't it?

These stadium debates always boil down to the same point - wanting something for nothing.

No it doesn't, it's about having half a clue and being economically rational, and flexible.

Every week at Etihad shiteloads of seats on levels one and two, not in any membership area, sit empty. Why wouldn't you sell them instead? It's a good experience and people might come back.

I have an Essendon reserved seat on level one, for which I pay a premium. There wouldn't be any at our games because almost the entire two levels are reserved for members.

But at another game where those seats aren't sold, why wouldn't you sell them at the right price to people who've come along? Theyre obviously too expensive, they just sit empty. They've got the whole supply / demand thing wrong.

Go on eBay any week and look at medallion club tickets. That there is the market value.

Its simply moronic to leave people in s**t seats when others are empty, almost as if out of spite. Of course people will resent the place.

I believe he's being sarcastic.

The government shouldn't be paying for anything. It's a stupid idea.

Clubs are struggling to make money from Etihad because stadiums cost a fortune and are hardly used and the big mean greedy owners (who paid for the thing) want to make some money off it before they sell it for a dollar and people think the solution is to spend more money on stadiums ???

A new stadium would need to be paid off as well and any deals would be just as bad.

I'd love each club to still have their own grounds up and running. Even if they only hold 20,000. Could hold 2-3 'spiritual' home games a year there which would be fantastic for the clubs supporters.

Just need a billionaire to come in and be willing to fund it for all clubs
