Mega Thread Congratulations Matt Priddis

I have known the brownlow was a joke since:

1) Judd won in 2010 because Chris Judd, robbing Swan of a brownlow.

2) The very next year Swan apparently had the best season of any player ever (even though he performed better the year before) to win the brownlow.

Clearly the umpires are influenced by media and "star power".

Well done to Priddis though, the stats show he probably deserved on consistency alone once you take Fyfe and Ablett out. I can think of worse people to win it!
How much "media" and "star power" does Priddis command? Wasn't even mentioned as a potential winner and has never been a media pet.

Some shocking comments in this thread.

The Brownlow has lost zero credibility, if anything it's gained some. Last night a team player who always plays as best as he can won the Brownlow. Sure Priddis isn't flash, isn't an elite talent. Instead he is a player who will give 110% every game, will always do the team thing, a hard worker that shows that you don't need to be a superstar to win the award.

The stats don't lie, this year he had his best season stats wise, he polled in 13 games when the team only won 11 and didn't play finals. The umpires award the votes to what they see on the ground and I have no doubt at ground level Priddis does everything required.

So well done Matt Priddis. A great football story of a player overlooked four times in drafts who made the most of what he has and won the Brownlow and this happy fan a nice bundle of cash. A rookie listed player who may not have been the best but certainly was the fairest.

Congrats to Priddis a very underrated player and deserved winner.

Even so I still have to pose the question does the Brownlow need to be changed? Or emphasis put on other awards as THE award to win, Coaches Association, MVP?
Not having a go at Priddis but it is a midfielders award and other great players don't necessarily get credit because they don't play in that position, at least create an award for defenders they don't get enough credit.

Coaches association and MVP were won by midfielders/smalls as well so this whole question is worthless. The brownlow is always won by midfielders (as are 99% of other awards) because this game is a midfielders game. They get the ball 30 times a game and are always around the play. Whereas fwds and backs are only in the game for 1/2 the time, dont get as much of the ball.

The best fwds these days kick only 60-70 goals, backmen are no longer one out and while they may play well get so much help through zones and players dropping back that they do not have that big an influence on a game to overtake midfielders who accumulate so much of the ball.

I was more commenting on the brownlow and it's credibility which is low in the first place. I am actually really pleased a lesser known player has won. Also happy to see buddy get votes as I am getting sick of it being a "midfielders" award.

The brownlow is definitely low on my list of priorities, forgot it was even on last night.

Everyone who is complaining needs to settle down and realise that the normal favourites would have won had it not been for injuries and suspensions.

Can't say much about priddis as I saw very little of the weagles this year but the stays show that he is probably the most consistent after ablett and Fyfe so therefore should get the medal.

Eagles fans. (RE: All Australian this year)

You say fans but that is one poster ;)

Perhaps more suprising than the fact that no one at the Crown realised he'd won with a round to go is the fact that Bigfooty are shocked that Priddis won an award that rewards consistency and playing every week when GAJ, Fyfe, JPK & Buddy all missed multiple games this season.

Oh please, there is a whole thread on the WC board bagging him. And certainly gets bagged out during games from the crowd.

That poster deserves a medal, he basically predicted how the medal count went.

Open your eyes and see the winky face I put, I know it's early...

I wonder if the Eagles supporters that have been bagging Prids for the last few years will stop now

One Eagles supporter said he would tear up his membership if Priddis won the Charlie. I wonder if he really did :p

Could gain the captaincy role for WC now after this

Last night was awesome for Priddis but the Brownlow is not a compelling argument for one to change their assessment of his year.

A Brownlow is a very compelling argument to change your assessment on his year. He is the leagues fairest and best player of 2014

Some of the comments levelled here towards Priddis are just appalling.

There sure are some jealous failures around here.

I would take a bloke like Priddis in a heartbeat at the Giants because not only is he a class player, he also espouses all the values of hard work, determination, and unselfishness that you look for in a person.

The supposed West Coast fans whacking him on the day he's finally recognised should be truly ashamed!

Would hate to be in the trenches with you pri*ks.
or maybe because your whole midfield is s**t other then ward

How do people say it was better then cooney medal he was favourite to win in it and had decent odds on him

Mostly by people who don't seem to understand the nature of the award. Go back over history and you will find a number of winners who weren't the "best" in their year but were still worth winners who had good seasons. Does anyone really think Kelly was better than Carey in 95? That Wanganeen was better in 93' than Ablett or Williams; or Wynd better than Dunstall in 92'? Some people need to wake up to themselves IMO and learn to take this award for what it is rather than whinging every year the winner isn't Mr Obvious.

And personally, I love that the award recognises a guy like Priddis instead of spewing up the same generic names and opinions that media and punters like to promote. It is it's own award with its own character and I hope it never changes.
Good post.

Tony Liberatore's 1990 Brownlow was similar. No obvious standout player in that season either. Like Priddis, not the greatest kick, but Libba was also a hard-working tackling machine and "in and under" clearance specialist who played in an average team. A victory for the underdogs - they both had to work hard; overlooked by a lot of people; others saying they weren't good enough; they weren't going to make it in the AFL, etc.

People need to wrap their head around the idea that "best player" is just an opinion. Not a fact. Best players in a game, best players in a season, best players of all time - nothing factual, just opinions…

The various individual awards have different methods of recognising the top players and they reflect different people's opinions. I like the way a number of different players receive awards from the media, umpires, AFLPA, AFLCA, etc. It's much more interesting than when one superstar scoops all the awards.

People have always undervalued Priddis - now they will be forced to re-evaluate their own opinions.

If you browse through the Priddis thread on the West Coast board, some are employing cognitive dissonance techniques so that they don't have to. Obviously I can't link individual posts here but I'm still shaking my head at some of them.

Yet if Gray won it last night you would be creaming your pants. LOL at people who dont get what they think they deserve.

You think the umpires have a better idea of who was BoG over the coaches or even the players. Im not having a dig at Priddis I'm just saying the Coaches award and players award have more credibility than the Brownlow in my eyes.

:D Yeah, I've been meaning to take a look at the West Coast board and gauge the reaction of the Matt Priddis fan club.

So much of this stuff is appearances and perception. Josh Kennedy is admired by everyone and would've been viewed as a worthy winner, but I don't think he is any more damaging with his disposal than Priddis. He isn't quick or dynamic. Kennedy is a big unit, whereas Priddis has a more burrowing, ferreting style, but on the whole, there isn't a lot of difference between them as footballers. For some reason, Kennedy is pumped up as the best centreman in the AFL, whereas Priddis struggles to make people's Top 50 lists. It's all out of whack, IMO.
