Finished with a 3 goal run, started by Amos Frank, to end the half. BHH trail by a point.

7.4.46 to 6.9.45

Boseley has been solid in defense.
Brand is being well beaten in defense.
TO'B is presenting well, but is suffering from poor delivery. Looks tired and fatigued from a long year.
Frank hasn't had much of the ball. Kicked a goal, but isn't roving the packs very well. Defensive pressure is good however.

Bhh kicked away in the third. Kept the blues to only 2 goals, 1 of which came from one of the worst 50m penalties you will ever see. BHH kicked 7 goals that quarter.
Bhh lead 13.14.92 to 9.6.60. Could be 10 goals up with better kicking.

TO'B started with a contested mark and goal. Kid is something special. He's just built like a stick.
Brand has improved in the third. Started attacking the ball and not the man and that's resulted in him winning the contests.
Amos frank has been lively. kicked another goal in the third.

Brandon Wood and Tom Cunningham were BHH's best that quarter.

It was a warm and cloudy day as the Box Hill Hawks lined up against the "Famous" Northern Blues who have only been in existence for one season.

The Northern Blues started like a house on fire. Their pressure and perceived pressure was immense and this resulted in Box Hill being rushed, sloppy and scrappy with the ball. Their kicks were short, flat and often landed 1-2m in front of their intended target and this put the target under duress and the result of this was turnovers. The Blues kicked the first 2 goals of the game. However, about half way through the first quarter the Hawks got some momentum and tied the game up and finished the stronger team at the quarter time break, but were still trailing. All the Hawthorn players were relatively quiet, although Boseley was sound in defense.

In the second quarter, the Hawks started with the momentum, but as I posted, bad kicking is bad football. With all the momentum, the Hawks got four shots from between 25-40m from goal and close to directly in front. All the shots were behinds. The Blues then went down the other end, against momentum, and kicked a goal. This changed the momentum and the Blues rode a wave and kicked about 3 or 4 goals in a row. Like the first quarter, the hawks turned things around and finished with a couple of late goals to go in a point down at the half.
TO'B had been kept quiet and the delivery to him was high, slow and not far enough in front of him. This allowed the bigger bodied defender to spoil him easily and make TO'B ineffective.
Brand was well beaten and as he continually tried to find the body of his opponent rather than attack the ball. With his small size, Brand was easily beaten and the Blues forward was taking contest marks on him within scoring range. A change needed to be made at half time with his defensive approach. It was.
Frank was all the fall of the ball, however his ability to read the ball of the pack was below average. He looked a step behind in the first half, although in one moment of mastery, he picked the ball up off a spoil of TO'B and kicked a goal.
Boseley was sound and rarely beaten. Skills were solid, but he was keeping it simple with his kicks.

In the 3rd quarter, the Hawks kicked away. The had a run of about 6 goals and up until about the 25 min mark, had kept the Blues to just 0.2 for the quarter. TO'B started to find some form including kicking the first goal off the quarter after taking a 2 on 1 contested mark about 35m out, directly in front. This goal seemed to fire the Hawks up and they went on with it. Their attack on the ball was much harder than the Blues and their skills in contested situations was far superior. Amos Frank and Tom Cunningham were both outstanding with their defensive pressure and created a lot of scoring opportunities for the Hawks whilst also kicking a goal each themselves. Brandon Wood also lifted his game and was a beast around the middle and forward as he took no prisoners.
Brand also came out a different player in the 3rd. He was now attacking the ball and not the player and he made his opponent ineffective for the remainder of the game. He used his reach and superior reading of the play to win thew contest. His skills are still average at best.

In the final quarter, the Hawks got a good start, kicked a few goals and then put the cue in the rack. This allowed the Blues to kick a few consolation goals to make the margin less sevre than it was, but the Hawks were clearly the better team throughout the day and the result was justified.

Another year, another development GF for the Hawks.

**There is something special about TO'B. He leads like a classic forward. Hard, fast and direct and jumps early to benefit him. Despite being built like a fetus, he had terrific balance while in the air and if he's not going to take the mark, he controls the ball so he can have a second go at it when he lands. What set him apart from all the KPF's today and will in the future is his 2nd effort. It was effort after effort without second thought while the others were having their first effort, waiting and then going for their second effort. TO'B goes, goes again and goes again to do whatever to benefit his team.
It may have only been a development squad game, but you could see the fundamentals, the 1%ers that you need in a KPP to make it at the top level.

Goal Kickers: A. Frank 3, T. Goodwin 2, R. Exon 2, N. Papadopoulos 2, S. Collins 2, M. Northe 2, B. Wood , T. O''Brien , T. Miles , J. Wilsen
Best Players: M. Thompson, M. Weekes, D. Graham, T. Miles, R. Exon, T. Goodwin

Cust, Retzlaff, O'Donnell and Eade dropped out of the 27 players named. Cust, Retzlaff and O'Donnell were rested to best prepare for the seniors PF against Werribee and Daniel Pratt will be available for selection. The Blues hit the ground running after their 21.19.145 to 5.2.32 elimination final win over Casey Scorpions whereas the Hawks looked flat and rusty after their week off. The goal scoring sequences in the first half were: 1st Qtr. Blues, Blues, Exon, Miles, Blues, Exon and Blues. 2nd Qtr. Blues, Blues, Blues, Frank, Papadopoulos and Miles. The 4 unanswered goals were a concern however 6 of the 7 first half Blue's goals resulted from a combination of poor disposal, switching or discipline which was something we rectified kicking the last 3 goals before half time.

The goal scoring sequences in the second half were: 3rd Qtr. O'Brien, Wood, Frank, Goodwin, Wilsen, Blues, Collins, Goodwin and Blues. 4th Qtr. Northe, Blues, Blues, Frank, Blues, Northe and Papadopoulos. Our 8 unanswered goals in the second and third quarters was a good indication of our dominance when we were switched on. The Blues tried to rough up some of our players in the last quarter however our discipline was good. I agree with the 6 players named as best. Tom Goodwin [son of Andy ex Tig and Dee] played his best game for the club. Tom and Kalem Post set up the win by beating big bodied ex AFL listed Nick Meese in the ruck. Ryan Exon kept us in the game with an excellent first quarter. All players played a role in the win but will need to be switched on from the first bounce in the GF.

Just love the way Kalem Post goes about it. Was drenched in Vick Vaporub battling it out and still gave it 100% every time. He and Tom Goodwin make a formidable ruck combo.

Was interesting to see that a few players who could've gotten a run this week in Cust and Retzlaff weren't even used. Big Retzlaff up forward could've been very handy but we seem to have some very capable small forwards. Amos and Matt Northe were playing the same position and kicked 5 between them. We do have some nice tall key forwards in Hawthorn-listed Tim O'Brien and Tom Goodwin. It was nice to see key defender James Wilsen sneak down forward and kick a goal.

Overall, Box Hill dominated the game as we gave away some cheap 50's and free kick goals early in the first half and did loosen up in the fourth and let the Blues kick a couple.

Not sure how the coaching staff will address the way we played Williamstown last time as we lost by over 20 goals. Do we forget about it and start fresh going into the GF or do we use the defeat as motivation?

Will be a big test next Saturday but the Box Hill boys will be up for it.
By the way, this is the sixth consecutive VFL reserve/Development Grand Final that Box hill Hawks have been in.
