One of the key scientists responsible for the WHO meat cancer scare is a Vegan.

Just sayin.

“I suppose it started when I was a kid with the odd sausage. From there I moved up to rissoles and chops. By the time I was a teenager I was into everything. Kabanas and kranskis, yiros and doner kebabs, salami and mettwurst. You name it. I was doing bacon most mornings and ham every lunch time. I’d eat scotch fillet when I had the dough.

Once I broke into someone’s car and stole a shoulder of lamb. I seasoned it with garlic, lemon, oregano and white wine, and cooked it for five hours on a low heat so it caramelised as it reduced. It was at that point I realised I’d hit rock bottom and decided to get some help.”

Ken, not his real name, is typical of so many of his generation who, despite five years of prohibition, are still illegally obtaining and consuming meat.

The year is 2030. We meet Ken at the Kings Cross Safe Ingestion Room, a taxpayer-funded clinic for meat addicts opened five years ago by the Prime Minister, Greens senator Richard Di Natale.

The meat users are a pitiable sight. They obtain the meat on what are known as “meat trays” from members of outlaw motorcycle gangs and Asian meat triads who smuggle in entire carcasses from disreputable meat-eating places such as Texas, Argentina and Croatia.

Today I'm completing my first 24 hour in nearly 3 months been struggling to get my diet in check of late and I feel like some more fasting will definitely help with that.

Had a BP coffee as a lunch replacement but won't eat any fast breaking food until dinner time.

Whenever I've been fasting regularly I've always found my appetite and cravings for bad food is kept in check. Fingers crossed.
Feel so much better for having a BP coffee and skipping lunch instead of eating some unhealthy crap from the office cafeteria. When I'm back weight training in the morning it won't be sustainable but at least for my days off it's working well.

Fasting is the best. Everyone should try it. 3-4 day are the go.

Not at all. I'm as happy as I've ever been. World Vegan Day festival was as big and popular as its ever been. Magnificent to see.

Just going off your condescending and dismissive track record, there's little chance of meaningful conversation with yourself.
How was the festival? Heard durianrider was in attendance... a few friends of mine went said it was good

The biggest and best yet mate. I recall the first one I attended a few years back, there were approx 1,200 people. On Sunday we had over 15,000. Amazing turnout.

The food was glorious as usual. But what struck me this year was the amount of men in my age group who came and were very interested, clearly they had 'made the connection'. I was amazed at how open and honest some were in admitting how hypocritical they've been for so long.

My son and I were volunteering in one of the stands and had plenty of conversation throughout the day. Had a great to chat to a bloke around 30ish, said that the real clincher for him was when he used to get upset about live export.

But then he realised how hypocritical he was, because he really cared little whether cows were slaughtered here or overseas. Either way, they're condemned to death without their consent. So really, he just didn't want to know about it, like most in today's society do.

People live a very convenient and comfortable way of life. It's great this is now being challenged by those who choose to think.

And lastly, was great to see the huge number of recent vegans and vegetarians after the WHO facts were released.

Have you been to the event before?

That's great to hear.. a few friends went and they told me to come but I am not vegan. I tried following the vegan lifestyle cause it isn't just about what you eat.. but I just found it too difficult.. I have the utmost respect for those that follow the lifestyle..

Don't worry too much about labels. It can be overwhelming for people to try and live up to something that they think is beyond them. There's a distinction between a 'vegan' and a 'plant based diet'.

I know many who follow a 'plant based diet' purely for the significant improvements to their health, the environment etc. But they don't really have the same consideration for animals etc. I respect their honesty in that regard, far more than I do a meat eater who pretends to care about the death of an animal as long as it was 'humane'.

I myself am vegan and do not wear clothing that is derived from animal skin, or purchase products that was tested on animals. Or wear leather etc.

This was quite challenging to do as I was at Goldman Sachs in NYC at the time I made my decision. Luckily I stumbled upon a great vegan tailor just near Harvard where I was studying and loaded up on suits there.

Anyway, that's a major distinction between the two. But for you, I wouldn't concern yourself with that. Just do what you feel is right and know that every step is creating momentum in the right direction.

We grow enough food by way of soy, corn, grain and wheat etc to feed approx 12-13 billion people per annum. But instead of eating this food, we decide to use it to grow the 100 billion plus land animals that are slaughtered every year.

This comes at a detrimental and staggering cost to the environment, the planet, our resources and our health.

Meanwhile, over 900 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished and lack basic access to food and water.

Our distribution of our resources is ******* disgusting, and the time will come when we will be condemned by future generations for our shocking treatment of each other, our planet, and the animals that we coexist with.

It's proven we do not need to rely on the cruel death and torture of animals to live happy and healthy lives. But humans are an incredibly selfish species.

I listen to the s**t people spout out to mask their own guilt and hypocrisy. There was a time too where I used to tell myself what I wanted to hear just so I could justify my food choices (ie, 'humane' meat).

Factory farming is horrific and will one day be viewed in same means as we know look back upon the age of slavery and shake our heads with disgust.

The time will come. It's happening already. When people stop to really think about the facts, it really is an irrefutable choice.

You're either part of the problem. Or part of the solution.

The vegetarian myth - you should read it.

The time is coming for locally produced food which is dependent on farm animal s**t (literally). Not only that but an omnivore diet is healthier than a vegan diet, MUCH MUCH MUCH healthier.

I hear people crap on about how great they feel on their "vegan diets" and when asked what they used to eat they admit to eating maccas and kfc every day. A healthy vegan diet (plants not GMO soy, corn and wheat so many of you chow down on), is ok for a small period of time if you body is highly toxic, as it is a cleanising diet. However it is not a nourishing diet. For nourishment you need your healthy organic animal produce.

My friend has been crapping on to me about how vegan diets are the way to go - it occurs to her that i do actually study physiology and have a very good understanding how the body absorbs nutrients, what the body needs AND the toxicity a diet full of high processed sugar, carbs, soy, corn and wheat is. It's like she's pleading with me so she can keep deluding herself. I just say, "lets not talk about food".... Then she tells me how amazing faux meat is.

It's ridiculous.

You might have a growing number of hippies following your vegan movement but it's not being take seriously by people who understand how the human body works.

Enjoyed that. Was a good laugh.

I hold an MBA and a doctorate. And conquered cancer for the second time on a vegan diet. Soley with my diet. No surgery or chemotherapy.

I'm well aware of how the human body works. Couldn't care less if that's not good enough for you. You're validation isn't required and your opinion is irrelevant to me.

Hmmm, ok o_O

Is it safe to assume that your "Doctrate" is related to physiology and your "MBA" is indirectly related to the topic being discussed?

What difference would that make? Assume what you like.

Don't particularly care whether you deem my credentials worthy of discussion or not.

For the record, you're wrong again. My wife too is a doctor at The Royal Children's Hospital. But hey what do we know, we're vegans right?

I was pathetically labelled a Nazi earlier in the day, and now I'm a hippie. Haha, pretty standard defensive measures that I encounter quite often.

Lastly, to defeat cancer using only the power of one's body is only possible once you've absolutely mastered how the human body works.

I remember this from from an earlier thread and I thought is was odd you chose to highlite Pete Evans bent spoon award from the same group who ridiculed gerson therapy as quackery.

Thanks for an articulate comment, that's fair enough. Appreciate you remembering my cancer battle, and despite our other clashes I do recall you being quite genuine in your questions and comments about it.

The quackery comment was only because I believe that thread has a bit more of a light hearted nature about it, and a bit more leeway in it. That's all.

How come Gerson Therapy didn't work for Jessica Ainscough or her mother?

You know who else tried that for his easily treatable cancer? Steve Jobs. How'd that turn out.

It makes a BIG difference what your doctorate is in.

Don't particularly care what difference my qualifications makes to you. You're opinion is irrelevant.

As for Steve Jobs, I'm in no position to comment about his particularly situation. Just like I'm in no position to comment about others suffering from cancer who choose convential treatment. That's for them to decide what is best for their condition.

It would be inappropriate to comment on things I know nothing about.

My opinion is not irrelevant. I'm a cancer specialist. If your MBA and Doctorate are related to a health field, you wouldn't have any problem with flaunting that. You're clearly that type of person.

So given that they're irrelevant, why are you waving them around? Is this a dick measuring contest? Grow up.

My Doctorate absolutely is relevant to my health. The very reason I don't feel the need to state them is because I seek no validation from you or anyone else here. In that respect, you're irrelevant.

Certainly not waving them around either, I was accused of not knowing how the human body works from another foolish response here. Was just correcting his ignorance.

As for growing up, you were the one who flippantly tried to relate my condition to Steve Jobs. Perhaps take your own advice before trying to dictate standards of behavior to others.
