Gary Ablett Jr

A high-paid player and club captain should not be declining pre-arranged interviews with prominent outlets.

This idea that players can't knuckle down on their football without blowing off media commitments is naive, archaic thinking. Just doesn't cut these days. However GAJ isn't the only one, a lot of players seem to get away with this kind of behaviour.
How do you know it was agreed to and pre-arranged?

How do you know the clubs media manager didn't refuse?

At the moment we have the word of one man, who is as vindictive and churlish as any on TV.

By pre-arranged I mean Triple M attempted to arrange the interview ahead of time.

Whoever refused, it is not good enough.

Before even played his first game for Gold Coast, Lyon was having full on shots at him, sneeringly calling him 'Party Boy Ablett' who only went up there for the party life style.

Lyon can go and get ****ed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lyon on shaky ground having a crack at others party boy culture given his own (sniff sniff) issues

Why should he do anything for MMM? Who are they to him? Stuff MMM they can go to hell.

Keeping in mind what's been revealed regarding Gold Coast's severe cultural issues this year, do you think those calls were unwarranted? It seems GAJ has done little to remedy the problems centered around party-boy lifestyles at the club, and he may have in fact contributed to them. Similar to his father, he has built a reputation of being able to get away with things that others can't because of his superb footballing prowess. That's all well and good, but it's not the attitude a leader of the club should be exhibiting. He should never have made it so clear that he believed he was bigger than the club,

Definitely another body of evidence he is allowed to dictate his own status as more important than the club.

It simply isn't a good culture he is driving. Maybe their performance standards are and diet and stuff after better because of Ablett but nothing else. They don't seem vocal and a team structure. They don't all go in.

Give it to Rischitelli. Whoever. Anyone is better

But but, it's a disgrace. Proves all the rumors a bloke like Lyon just made up.

Suspect OP is a journalist.

To me this is just in the same vein as Malthouse. Figure who someone in the media has a vendetta against and now that he has seen an opportunity.

It's always the prominent contraversial figure. Not the board at Carlton, nor Eade/Blight at GC.

GC were on the up and Ablett looked a great captain last year. Then he was injured, GC improved but didn't make finals and Blight white anted the coach. Hasn't worked well, but to peanuts like OP it's Ablett's leadership, not injuries and club management.

A Melbourne radio station is not that prominent with regards to the GC and club fans.

A radio station that pays for broadcasting rights should have reasonable player access, regardless of the player's club or the station's location.

Feel like everyone's just sticking the boot into a guy who's capacity to lead has been severely limited by the fact hes sitting on the sidelines while his team cops a smacking every week. Didn't see many people complaining about his leadership mid way through last year when Ablett was outright favourite for the Brownlow and leading his team into a finals campaign.

Triple M are just playing sour grapes because they can't have their 10 min interview where they rubbish his team, their culture problems, and his leadership qualities while he is unable to influence any of it beyond some token media appearances and advice to his teammates which aren't going to change a thing however much we seem to like to think otherwise.

Is it?

What it seems like to me is one man with a grudge.

GC were on the right track, but Blight runs it like a fiefdom. Results weren't coming fast enough so they tried a Fremantle and it backfired. Eade has backers in the media and a lot claimed it would be the making of GC. It seems they can't handle being wrong so the finger pointing has begun. First it was nebulous club culture, though it's weird blaming players who are mostly injured, now Lyon didn't get his way, so it's the captain.

Evidence, not rumor, would suggest it is neither. The club prematurely sacked a coach popular with the players and appointed Eade, who hasn't done well.

Injury and a lack of connection with a coach, famous for being prickly has seen them start the season poorly.

Wow some people really love to put the boot in.

Ablett (at least in the last few years) has been someone who likes to stay away from the limelight... That, probably just as much as the money IMO, was why he moved up to the Gold Coast.

Lyon is a biased commentator who can act like quite a dick at times, and reportedly has done so re: GAJ in the past.

I have absolutely no problem with Gazza turning down an interview. Who the * are we to demand that we need to know everything that is happening at a club.

And you can't judge his leadership based on this. And you cant really judge it on how the team was going when he isnt playing. (From an injury that reoccured when he tried to push himself back too quickly). Judge his captaincy from the improvement those around him were showing when he was last on the field, and from the opinions of those at his own club. (and all reports from his coach and teammates have been very positive). If his teammates or coach dont like him as captian, then let them deal with that the right way - behind closed doors and replace him.
