We could have had all 4 players and both O’Meara and Mitchell would have thought that was probably going to be the case when they signed up. Instead we were left with basically just Mitchell and a banged up O’Meara to lead the charge.
Don’t forget both Sam and Jordan had just come 1 & 2 in out B&F.
our salary cap was full, Sam and Jordan were two of our highest paid players

It was definitely a miscalculation. Clarko thought having a mature conversation with them both might allow the opportunity for at least 1 of them to leave. We didn't think they both would.

Jordy has denied for years being salty about it and the whole captain stuff, interesting that he's finally revealing what we all knew.

Both were salty and why wouldn’t they be when you bleed for the club. Lewis was probably under the impression he was to be made captain when called in and rightly so as he deserved it, but instead told to look elsewhere.
He tried to put on a brave face as you do and now the truth is coming out.

No it wasn’t, we had Buddy money. Hodge, Roughie and Burgoyne would have been our highest paid players.
Lewis wasn’t on more than those three.
It was more the case of Clarko thinking we were too one paced and needed to get rid of one, it backfired with both deciding to leave when the suggestion was made.

from 2013?
Big Boy and Frawley were added
Younger players got pay rises
Other contracts were back ended from 2013-2015
From memory we front loaded a lot of contracts when Buddy left. Frawley and McEvoy were not on big money, it was all about winning flags that got them to the club. Buddy money was huge, we were going to match or did match, but not willing to give him 9 years, which was understandable.

If we matched and Franklin stayed we would have had to move on one or two premiership players

Can't agree with this.
Writing was on the wall for Hawks in 2016. We were going ok but you could tell we weren't the side we were.
Roughy no cancer = us better than Doggies 2016 (whether we would have beaten GWS is another story but every other team was up for grabs and Doggies got a great ump run against them!).

The Oliver story is huge. I can't think of a midfielder of his calibre (26 year old midfielder, 2x Coaches Association award winner, 4xB&F) moving clubs since Judd. He's better than Dangerfield and Neale were when they moved.

The chances of any player drafted this year, including Reid, being as good as Oliver are slim. Without the baggage he is worth more than pick 1. The question is how bad the baggage is and how much it dilutes his value but regardless he's clearly a top 10 player in the competition who would be transformative for any club if he stays on the park.

Not this year's pick 1.

During the lockdowns he was on a live chat with one of the supporter sites.
He mentioned it on that ( think he had a few reds 🙂 )
You could tell it guttered him but he also still loved the club.
ISTR he said in an interview that he got Roughy to head to the club and clean out his locker as he just didn't want to go there (understandably, given how raw he must have felt)

Interesting but not surprising that Lewis thought we were still a chance to win a flag in 2017. And it makes his anger at the time even more understandable.

He didn’t just have expectations of being captain. It was of being premiership captain.
