Where in Alaska are you headed?

Back in 2017 I arrived in Anchorage on Xmas day (having left Melbourne, Aus) Xmas morning - so 4 flights & about 38 hours from leaving the hotel at Tulla to sitting on the bed at the other end. I then spent new year's at Utqiagvik which is the northern most point of mainland USA before heading to Fairbanks for a couple of days

Fairbanks had the best view of the northern lights, and definitely saw better colours through my camera lens than the naked eye

On previous trips I'd been to Austin (really enjoyed), Vegas which is a crazy place but fun, and I'm one of those people who does enjoy LA having been a couple of times & would go back to visit other areas I didn't really have means of visiting

Enjoy the while trip, and hope you get some great, clear weather in Alaska to view the northern lights
Alaska trip sounds awesome!

LA you can have to yourself. Never been more disappointed than LA, was super excited and super let down :)
Everyone has different things.

From my recent trip, the biggest pleasant surprise for me was Miami, wasnt on my radar, but Mrs Goose was keen, I loved it.
The Cuban and latin cultures give it a wonderful vibe. There is a cool urban art scene, not typically my thing, but really enjoyed it. A very cool vibe, would encourage others to give it a go.

Alaska is fun, and I'd go back but next time in summer

My first trip to the US & Canada was back in 2006/97 and an 8 month experience, with the flights given as a graduation present after uni - 7 months solo and then the last month my mum joined me, which was nice as it also meant having someone else to pay for things, 😂

I got as far south in Florida as Orlando (Universal Studios), and while I did look into travelling to the Florida Keys, my research was telling me it was hit & miss as the area hadn't really recovered since Katrina a year earlier

9 years later on my 3rd trip to the US my first stop was New Orleans, and 10 years on from Katrina there was still large areas of NO that hadn't recovered, houses/buildings still bordered, uninhabitable & waiting to be demolished etc. So if that's what it was like 10 years on, I'd hate to have seen what of those hardest hit areas would have been like barely 12 months on

With LA I've been lucky to have meet some great people across my stays there, so that helps. But main reason I want to go back is to go to Long Beach, stay on the Queen Mary, and see if it really is haunted

Anybody planning a trip to SoCal, seriously consider taking the Express out to Catalina Island:

Probably best to plan an overnight or multiday stay, but even a day trip to Avalon can be very fun.

I've been to San Diego and it was just so chilled & relaxed - I remember walking to Balboa Park and enjoying an afternoon nap under a palm tree on what I later realised was Superbowl Sunday

But when I've been in LA it's been more the the northern areas like West Hollywood, out to Pasadena, whatever area the Staples Centre is and out to Venice Beach & Santa Monica. My fav part of WH is the view from the top of Runyon Canyon Park, and it can be rather peaceful up there

The furthest south I've been in the greater LA area other than the airport is Anaheim - that's why I wouldn't mind experiencing Long Beach, Catalina Island etc

Grew up in L.A. (specifically Highland Park) and my favorite places are still the foothills and San Gabriel mountain range. You can drive to the top of Mt. Wilson and visit the observatory there (Google "Skyline Park"). There's another suggestion for ya.

I love any sort of working seaport and so have always enjoyed San Pedro and Long Beach.

How many weeks in a row have we beaten the oppo team in post count now? Feels like 3 or 4. Probably 2.

Is the match thread essentially turning into another Gumbies team chat, with the odd intervention from other posters

It's very strange to me. All the active threads I'm not really interested in. All the quiet threads, we're dominating.

Last two in a row. Three of our last four overall.

At least there's a few quieter teams we can kick it with. Similar to what baz said I just can't get into the larger threads even with teams I enjoy. They move to fast.

Hey Gumbos, how are your plastic dangly bits hanging?

Mop kicked a career best 6.4 and nobbyiscool was prominent in the middle, but our third quarter was a disaster. Luckily we held onto top spot on the ladder with one round left.

From half way through the first quarter until the final siren, we dominated our final home and away match. bone2468 (first career match topping 100DT) and cats_09 were brilliant, while there contributions all over the park. Seemingly coach decided NSWCROW (0% game time) and myself (24%) needed keep ourselves fresh for qeptember. So, 18 excellent players dominating on field and two people doing not a lot on the pine.

Two more match threads with majority posts so hopefully those posting are having fun. The uptick this weekend against the Royals was great to see in the leadup to finals.

We have a qualifying final against the Swamprats. Match threads by yours truly likely to be posted tomorrow evening/night. Let's have a fun week as the sim has an extended history of being unkind to our club at this time of a season.

beez 450
beez450.png

In our round sixteen match just played against the Royals, our friend beez reached 450 career Sweet FA matches. This means beez is a reallllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy old qootballer. Their journey began in season nine at the Wonders, before moving to [redacted] where beez played in two premierships and 291 games. In their time at [redacted] beez was part of three premierships, became a captain (and I believe a two-time premiership one at that) and won the inaugural players association medal now called the beez medal/trophy. Making the move here to Gumbania for season 29, beez is rapidly approaching club life membership.

beez is a big cricket fan, like myself, hence the choice of mascot in the banner above for this milestone match. 450 is a huge score in first class cricket and there is only one Australian who has reached the mark twice. That person (Bill Ponsford) being a proud Victorian, like beez, it only seemed appropriate to mark the occasion with a bee(z) playing cricket.

Congratulations on 450 matches, beez.

People also say I'm like Scott Pendlebury. Multiple premiership player. Multiple years as captain. But never captain when playing in a premiership with the club.

I thought it was because of your basketball background.
