Lets say professionalism started in the late seventies, so benchmark fitness back then to now, tv footage might help

So should ovals be 50% bigger ?

Just because we're quicker at running the 100m at the Olympics doesn't mean we run the 120m instead...
 
If anything increasing the oval size would just increases the incentive for players to become even fitter and then you would have to compensate for that new increase in fitness again, alternatively if you decreased the oval size players would be able to carry a bit more weight because they wouldnt need to run as far ,

although a larger oval would make it harder to employ a defensive zone, which would result in more one on one football, which i feel is more entertaining to watch,
