Roast I cursed Max King

If we're giving our one criticisms, mine would be that I want to see him do more repeat leads. Admittedly I've barely seen him play live, but from the limited evidence, he generally seems to make half-committed leads of a few steps, and then starting over again. I want to see him make more genuine long leads, and double back, and go again. This is obviously basic forward craft 101, so I assume it will come when his endurance builds up.

If my understanding is correct, Max always played his best football, growing up, as a deep pure full forward - the “out of the square” type, whilst Ben played the higher CHF role that you’re describing. This isn’t to say that he won’t develop this, but it might take a little longer.

((or we take a shortcut and try to get Ben *shrug*))

I think that there will be a tipping point once he bags 7 or more. Then there will be a media frenzy, and they'll fuss over everything that defenders do to try and stop him. At that point the umps will start watching for infringements more closely, knowing the scrutiny they are under, and will become trigger happy. Free kick Max King. Free kick Max King. Free kick Max King. Free kick Max King. Free kick Max King. Free kick Max King...

He really needs to clean up his set shot kicking. Misses way too many easy set shots that for a forward should be pencilled in.

Cameroon Mooney said it pretty well the other week, if he doesn't sort it out by the end of his career he will leave around 300 goals on the table due to his set shot kicking.

I’m seriously concerned that the club has obviously not taken seriously how poor his goal kicking routine is. Why have we STILL not done anything about it. Get somebody who was good at kicking goals to go through it with him. Especially on slight angles and directly in front. It’s the only part of his game he needs to work on.

They do. He does a lot of work one-on-one work with Roughhead and that included practising his goal kicking.

Bring back Ben Dixon.

I think he might need to speak to a mental specialist to get him in a positive frame of mind when he takes the shot. Match day pressure adds so much.

I bet the booing doesn’t help his mental state either. But he’ll have to learn to deal with that I guess.

Could also be the extra fatigue during a game that you cant really pratice with impacts his routine.

It's the tricky balance between working to improve it, and the not putting too much focus on it where he can get into his own head about it.

I think that might be his problem - getting inside his own head. Might not be anything he can do about it. It’s hard to get out of your head when you’re in that mindset.

Roughead is the best in the business spends hours with him and for that matter other players too.

Robbins has spent hours with him to on mental side of things.

Membrey suffers from the yips too
Marshall the same ...even Battle hardly misses but get a shot in game , the little man on the shoulder.

The more it’s concentrated on the worse it becomes , really liked what Buckley commented about
Goalkicking he spoke of indifference to it ..its as much mental as it is technical.

Riewoldt was fantastic kick for goal when he arrived at StKilda ...then the pressure came was only
fair kick for goal.
Goddard by comparison became elite ..strong mental belief.

So frustrating with King, you can see he has a unique talent, but his body needs to grow, which will give him added confidence. But no excuses, he & Membrey particularly, dropped this one for us. Especially as our midfield smashed them. Also, the backline had less entries, so should of been better also.

This is a fantastic post. I’m snipping it for the autopsy thread.

Is David Rath still at the club? Probably the best in the business at perfecting kicking. Turned Hawthorn sprayers into reliable kicks. Roughy is one if his best examples.

6 shots on goal though. Multiple marks inside 50. If he gets the kicking sorted watch out.

From the outside looking in it doesn't seem he has a routine, each kick looks different. Probably will get better with a bigger tank but hopefully he sorts it out

Yep working with individual young players....

My take ( for what it's worth) on Max is that game was the best he has played for us taking out the kicking yips. He fairly dominated the Geelong defence and looked to me like a great CHF in the making. He started to clunk those big marks and looked dangerous all night. His kicking yips is down to his technique no doubt. Good news is this can be fixed and we will soon see him hit the scoreboard in a big way. Yes, it was bloody frustrating and it probably cost us the game - but bot did he move well and those powerful marks were great to see. I am more angry that blokes like Membrey and Butler missed sitters than I am about young Max. This kid will be the best recruit we have ever had. Doggies defence is not as tall as the cats - so they will have trouble with him.
And also kudos to Brad Crouch - thought that was his best game for us too - he was tough in the clinches.

Hopefully he isn't the guy who's teaching Max goal kicking.

Actually Gringo mate part of it really relies on guys like Higgins / Ryder to lighten the load mentally .

When I see Higgins kick for a goal I see a guy who says give me the ball I will kick a goal .

Hence when young blokes like King get a mark , walk back to mark with them ,saying things like
gee there’s a nice blonde sitting in the centre row behind the goals ..take the mental pressure away.

See Roughead working with King ...defy anyone to find someone better , myself .

I love how posters were saying it was saints booing him as he was kicking for goal on the weekend. Maybe I’m the most negative supporter on the forum but at least I’m not that delusional I believe everyone hates our star recruit.

Maybe the were actually cheering Mr Byrnes?

Apparently Maxxy reached out to Lloyd for a kicking session after the Geelong game. Lloyd said he was keen but Max should get it ticked off by the club and THE SAINTS said no...

Unreal stuff

This is absolutely bewildering.

If the 15 goal losses weren't enough, then this has plummeted my confidence in the club even further.
