Not too bad, MM. You went for a few upsets but they didn;t come through for you. Super League teams only left now which hasn't happened for quite a while. I think Huddersfield will be right up there. They are a quality team.

Here's hoping. I'm over seeing Bradford, Wigan, St Helens and Leeds constantly dominating, plus I have a soft spot for the club representing the birthplace of rugby league.
On the ESL, it looks like poor old Salford are heading for relegation, with promotion still being fiercely contested between Widnes and Castleford.
Who do you think should be the two franchises admitted into the comp in 2009?
Personally, I'd like to see Toulouse (France) and the winner of NL1 in '08. A lot of people are calling for the Celtic Crusaders, but I don't think they're anywhere near ready yet. There's no great rush to bring them in either.

They have now moved into 4th position after 7 straight wins. They thrashed Bradford on the weekend and are looking very much a top-class team.

In 2009, I'd like Toulouse (France) and Celtic (Wales). They are both professional clubs and will attract big name players.
 
IRISH RUGBY LEAGUE ROUND 1

The Irish Rugby League season kicked off last weekend. It was a fantastic start to the 2007 Irish Rugby League season with several teams showing their intent from early on.

In the Lucozade Sport Elite League, the Carlow Crusaders ran out an impressive 36-16 victory over the Dublin Blues while last seasons beaten finalists Kildare Dragons managed to get a win against an impressive North Dublin Eagles.

In the Emerald Rugby Conference (North), despite a strong start, the Athlone Arrows could do little to constrain a resurgent Portadown Pumas who ran out 38-22 winners in the midlands. Meanwhile the Dublin City Exiles out classed the Athboy Longhorns with a mighty 66-16 victory over the home side.

In the Emerald Rugby Conference (South) a gripping encounter between the Crusaders ‘B’ and Portlaoise Panthers ended in a draw at 28 apiece meanwhile the Tullamore Knights made short work of the Kilkenny Wildcats to rack up a massive 70-12 victory over the visitors
 
American NRL kicks off 10th season this weekend

The American National Rugby League will kickoff it's tenth anniversary season this weekend to launch what should be the most evenly contested competition ever in the short history of Rugby League in the USA.

With the Rugby League World Cup qualifiers scheduled for November, all players in the AMNRL competition will be keen to showcase their talents in the early rounds of the season. A number of tough match ups are features of round one with all teams looking to start their seasons with a win. The young Raiders will face a tough Knights outfit at home, as the Knights are quietly confident about their chances to reclaim the National Championship after a few lean years and 2007 could well be the year that the cup returns to 'the Castle' in NYC.

The early season favorites from Florida, the Jacksonville Axemen will take on the newly relocated Bulls, who are still hurting from their defeat in last years Championship Final. Both teams will be eager to get their campaigns off with a victory after some good off season recruitment and preparations.

The match of the round will see the Sharks host the Warriors in what could be a preview to this season championship contenders. The Sharks have developed a great young group of talent whilst the Warriors are keen to improve on their debut season and stamp their authority on the competition with undoubtedly one of the biggest and most physical squads in the league.

The Wildcats will welcome the Fight to Norwalk for the first ever match up between the two teams in Connecticut. The Fight have stregthened on and off the field and will be a real challenge to the always consistent Wildcats, who are the reigning AMNRL Champions.

Some internal issues at the newly formed Fairfax Eagles Club may result in the Slayers v Eagles match being rescheduled, with more information developing regarding this situation soon.

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF RUGBY LEAGUE IN AMERICA IN 2007
 
The French LER GF has been played and won.

It was between Pia (Salanque Méditerranée Pia X111) and FC Lezignan X111.

Lezignan X111 actually had three teams in GF's that day.

In the main game, Pia won 20 to 16.

It was a back to back double for the small town after they won the Lord derby cup last month after sweeping all before them last season.

Excellent post, Parra.

Look out for the French in the World Cup next year. I believe they will surprise a lot of people with the flair and tenacity that they play with. Rugby league is back on the map in France and is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

Celtic Crusaders to be screened live on FTA

S4C and the Celtic Crusaders today announced an agreement to provide live coverage of a series of home fixtures in the Welsh rugby league club’s hunt for promotion this season.

The agreement will see four of the Crusaders’ Co-operative National League Two matches screened exclusively live on the Y Clwb Rygbi 13 programme this summer from their Brewery Field home in Bridgend.

The first game to be broadcast is Celtic Crusaders v Barrow Raiders on Saturday, June 9 (6.15pm) with three other league matches lined up this summer, subject to confirmation.

All the matches will be broadcast simultaneously free-to-air on S4C and S4C digidol, the channel’s digital service available on Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media in Wales and on Channel 134 on Sky in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The deal gives S4C the option of broadcasting live and exclusive coverage of Celtic Crusaders’ matches next season as the club bids to win a franchise for Super League status.

The TV deal will also involve S4C investing in the Celtic Crusaders’ Youth Academy, which is being set up as a nursery to cultivate the next generation of rugby league stars for the Crusaders in Wales.

Celtic Crusaders Chief Executive David Thompson said: “The agreement with S4C is another example of the growing interest in the Celtic Crusaders and rugby league in Wales.

“We are a Welsh club and not a regional club and the coverage to be provided by S4C will help introduce rugby league throughout Wales and take it to sports fans that have not yet experienced the game, hopefully helping us to win over even more fans.

“The Celtic Crusaders is now one of the fastest-developing clubs of any major sport in the UK, but the future of the club very much lies in the development of Welsh players and we will be investing heavily in our academy to ensure the player pathways are there for talented youngsters.

“S4C’s support for our youth academy is invaluable for the development of our future Welsh stars.”

Geraint Rowlands, S4C’s Content Editor Sport, said: “This broadcasting deal with the Celtic Crusaders is a significant addition to S4C’s ever-expanding rugby portfolio. It means that we can show quality rugby, across both codes, throughout the year, on the Channel.

“Viewers are in for a sizzling summer of sport on S4C following an ambitious rugby league club who may well be playing Super League in the not-too-distant future. S4C is keen to be part of the Celtic Crusaders’ growing success by providing coverage for a wider viewing public.”
 
Welsh Conference weekend previews

Bridgend Blue Bulls host the Blackwood Bulldogs this weekend at Porthcawl RFC in a game that has been labelled “the re-match”. The sides last met in the 2006 Welsh semi-final when the Bulldogs were just seconds away from defeating the Blue Bulls who have held the title since 2003.

Blackwood led Bridgend by 17 points with less than 10 minutes to go but late tries from Simon Mustoe, Matthew Hutchings and a last second score from Arran Warner gave Bridgend a dramatic 32-31 victory in what was one of the best games since the Welsh Conference began.

Bridgend’s hero on that day was wing Arran Warner who scored the late winner along with a first half interception. He again lines up against the Gwent side and ahead of the game said: “They were probably the best side we played last season and we were lucky to come away with the victory, but it was great to win such a dramatic game and I have to thank Matthew Hutchings who put in an excellent kick to allow me to score the winning try”.

Meanwhile Bulldogs coach Roger Moore said: “My heart was in bits after the game last year, it was our first season as a Rugby League side and we came within seconds of making the Wales final which was a great achievement but we’d love to go one better this year and beat the Blue Bulls”.

Just down the coast from Porthcawl the Neath-Port Talbot Steelers take on the Valley Cougars at Aberavon Green Stars RFC. The Cougars had a great start to the season hammering the West Wales Sharks before losing at home to Torfaen Tigers last Wednesday but the Steelers have had a shaky start and have lost both their opening fixtures.

Meanwhile the Sharks host the Cardiff Demons at their new Furnace RFC home who host their first ever Rugby League game. The Demons had a great start to the season beating the Steelers but lost by a single point to Blackwood last Saturday and are desperate to get their season back on track this weekend.

The final game this weekend sees a Gwent derby between the unbeaten Newport Titans and Torfaen Tigers at Pil Harriers RFC. A win for Newport will see them top the table and become serious challengers to title favourites Bridgend while Torfaen will want to claim their second win in a week after beating the Cougars on Wednesday.

LOKOMOTIVE vs EMPIRE


On 26 May took place two semi-final matches to the goblet of Russia on regbilig in Moscow, in Luzhnikakh "locomotive" it beat Moscow "Vereyu" with calculation 28:16, and in penza local "empire" inflicted defeat to the silver prize-winner of the championship of the country of 2006 Kazan' "arrow" with result of 16:6. Us awaits the gripping finale at the end of June between the priznanym leader of the Russian of regbilig Moscow "locomotive" and burst year ago into the number of strongest clubs Penza "empire".




The semi's of the Russian Cup seem to have gone this way:

Moscow Lokomotive - Moscow Vereya 28-16
Penza Empire - Kazan Arrow 16-6

So the Final at the end of June will be between Lokomotive and Empire.
 
FNRL sets date for Test in Tonga

The Fiji National Rugby League has confirmed a date for the one off-Test against Tonga.
The match will be held in Nuku'alofa on October 12.
The Vodafone Fiji Bati had secured the Test match as part of its RLWC build up.
Fiji defeated Tonga 30-28 last year in the RLWC qualifying competition.
Ratakele said FNRL was still awaiting word on the one-off international against the Junior Kangaroos.
The Junior Kangaroos are supposed to tour Fiji this October.
The RLWC will be played in Australia from October 25 to November 22 next year.
Fiji is pooled with France and the winner of the European qualifying competition.
Meanwhile, the FNRL League will conduct a fitness test today for elite players from the eastern conference vying for a spot in the Vodafone Fiji Bati team for the RlWC.
The fitness test will start at the Vodafone Arena from 8am.
Fiji Bati team manager Rusiate Ratakele said the players will be subjected to a strength/power test.
Players were given individual weights programs to work on in a bid to build their upper body strength.
Ratakele said the western conference players were tested last wee.
"We are hoping for good results from the players," the team manager said.
"Some players were warned for failing to turn up for the test in Nadi last week. We are hopeful that this does not reoccur. This is the first test for the players in the eastern conference. The results will be compiled and given to the players. It will also be sent to head coach Arthur Kitinas in Australia."

Rugby League European Federation Chairman and RFL Executive Chairman Richard Lewis has hailed a day long festival in Beroun, near Prague, as “a fantastic advert for the sport.”

He attended a series of games and exhibitions arranged by the Czech RL to showcase the code at all levels.

“The British Police have proved again to be fabulous ambassadors” he added, “and the Czech’s magnificent hosts.”

“It has been a great experience for everyone involved and a privilege to be present. It has reinforced the message in a new country - which seems to have a real affinity for the code - that it truly is a sport for all the family.”

‘Prague Robots’, a wheelchair rugby side gave a demonstration before a captivated crowd – with David Lukes outstanding - and they were then coached in the intricacies of League by British wheelchair RL representative Malcolm Keilty.

He commented, “It would be fantastic to build towards a wheelchair European Nations tournament. There are great opportunities for the sport to integrate with other wheelchair disciplines.”

A tag rugby competition involving a number of local school children followed as a curtain raiser to Beroun Under 16’s taking on the first junior touring side to the country, Gateshead Panthers.

In a superb contest, the Panthers ran out 30-18 winners with hat trick hero, full back Joshua Stoker the star of the show; although he was pushed for the accolade by the home side’s Jan Buben.

Tour Manager for the Panthers, John Gray said, “What a fantastic trip and life experience for all these young lads; I can’t wait for next one. The Czechs have looked after us superbly.”

In the final match, the strength and power of an experienced British Police outfit saw them dominate the second half against the Czech Republic.

In soaring temperatures of around 28 degrees, the Police only led 22-10 at the break but went on to triumph 68-10 with Robert White in superb form; Jaroslav Stribney being the Czech’s best performer.

Post-match presentations were made to all the players by Greater Manchester Assistant Chief Constable Ian Seabridge, along with Richard Lewis.

All the local schools were given the day off in order to attend the events, giving a fantastic atmosphere and they were joined by a host of local dignitaries; including the Mayor, regional Chiefs of Police and senior officers in the Czech Prison Service who were keen to meet their British counterparts.

The carnival began on Monday with an official reception held by the British Ambassador in Prague, Linda Duffield. Attending were the British Police, officials of the Czech Rugby League and the national side as well as the Mayor of Beroun.

The following day, 400 students aged between 7 and 16 from ‘Zakladni Skola’ in Beroun took part in skills sessions and received coaching from the British Police and the Czech national coaching team.

RUSSIA RL - Wigan lose to Energia (Russia)

New Springs Legion Lions from Wigan reached the final of the inaugural ‘Kazan Under 14's Victory Cup’ this weekend but could not overcome home side Energia, going down 24-10 in the decider.

Eight teams took part in the tournament which is set to become an annual event after being given a place in the official Russian Sporting Calendar.

Four Moscow-based clubs - Locomotive, Dinamo, Nord and Cherkisovo - joined two from Tatarstan - Strela Kazan and Energia Kazan; Empire Penza and NSLL.

The Lions were took a squad of 18 along with parents, manager Eric Fanning and Greater Manchester Police representative Ian Parker.

Each side played five matches and Tournament Director Alex Denisov, commented; "The boys had a great time and that’s what it’s all about. We are hoping to see a few more British clubs/teams taking part in this tournament in May next year."

PNG U/19's nearly beat QLD U/19's at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Iselin Stars as U19 Maroons Beat PNG

A FEARLESS PNG Development side has given Queensland Under 19 Maroons a run for its money for the second year in a row, despite falling 36-12 at Suncorp Stadium.
The deceiving final score was inflated by four tries in the final 15 minutes, with Tweed Heads’ pivot Trent Iselin helping to cut apart a tiring Kundus side.
Largely selecting home-based players this time around, PNG initially put up a spirited battle, going in 12-all at halftime.
The visitors even led for five minutes in the first half, grabbing a 12-6 advantage when backrower Api Warigeso scored his second try of the match from a grubber kick.
But Warisego’s fortunes were like that of his team and he struggled to finish the match, leaving for the sidelines concussed with a quarter of an hour to play
PNG was already left short after centre Mathias Emiabo limped off with a leg injury and lock John Arme found himself in Disneyland after a big hit in just the second minute.
Arme had been hammered by Gladstone’s Brendan Gibb, among the Maroons best along with Iselin, Atherton powerhouse Chris Riesen and prop Craig Bowering.
From outback Barcaldine, Bowering completed a rags to riches story after travelling 16 hours to trial for the team. He missed the cut when the squad was first announced, but then through a series of withdrawals and injuries, found himself promoted to the bench and then the starting team.
The youngster crashed across for the first try of the second half, converted by Riesen for an 18-12 lead.
PNG had its opportunities to fight back, with late replacement Dave Moore brought down just short in the 45th and then an overlap on the left going to ground.
Queensland didn’t need a second invitation to strike and they began piling on the points.
First Central Comets up-and-comer Christian Davies scored a try out wide to the right, followed five minutes later by Jared McCarthy, running off a good Iselin pass.
Barely three minutes passed before Tom Kingston crashed over and then, just to rub salt into the wound, Travis Waddell offloaded for half Tom Humble to score in the shades of fulltime.
It was the sixth try in succession for Maroons, proving far too good in the stamina department for an otherwise worthy adversary.
A shining light on the PNG team was fullback Kingston Pisep, only 17, but masterful in broken play and reportedly a subject of interest from the Sydney Roosters.
