Given MTV's demographic, who should the award have been given to?

I don't like either of Katy Perry or Gaga's music, but it should be obvious that Gaga has so much more musical talent than the former.If you can't decide it on image/personality, then musical artistry should take it.

Bear in mind that indie artists are almost insignificant on MTV so backpackers shouldn't bother wasting any energy on this.
