tried searching om google, but am am just wondering, which player would have taken the longest to play 100 games,
Dean wallis springs to mind, he played from 1987 to 2001, 14 years for 127 games.
a mixture of injury/ suspensions and being a crap player for most of his playing days only comming good until the last 2 years of his career

Dean Wallis (Essendon)
- 1st game: Round 8, 1987 (16-May-1987)
- 100th game: Round 14, 1999 (4-Jul-1999)

Here are a couple that beat that (although the last three didn't even get to 100 games!):

Bill Cubbins
- 1st game: Round 13, 1915 (17-Jul-1915)
- 100th game: Round 6, 1928 (26-May-1928)

Dave McNamara (St Kilda)
- 1st game: Round 13, 1905 (5-Aug-1905)
- 100th game: Round 2, 1921 (14-May-1921)

Jim Jackson (St Kilda, Collingwood, Hawthorn)
- 1st game: Round 2, 1909 (8-May-1909)
- 100th game: Round 7, 1925 (13-Jun-1925)

Syd Barker (Richmond, Essendon, North Melbourne)
- 1st game: Round 8, 1908 (13-Jun-1908)
- 68th and final game: Round 13, 1927 (23-Jul-1927)

Gerry Balme (St Kilda)
- 1st game: Round 10, 1902 (5-Jul-1902)
- 91st and final game: Round 18, 1915 (21-Aug-1915)

Jack McKenzie (Essendon, Melbourne)
- 1st game: Round 6, 1901 (1-Jun-1901)
- 97th and final game: Semi Final, 1915 (28-Aug-1915)

I'm sure the real stat gurus can tell us how many players have taken 12 years to reach 100 games.

Geelong having Brownlees, Brownless and Brownlow might be a unique way of having different surnames requiring sorting at the 7th letter!....Of course Charles Brownlow had only played in the association era.

Wars would have been a factor in many of those.

Tom Williams is sitting on 78 and is going into his 10th season next year. It may take him another 3 years to reach the 100 mark, putting him right up there

No guarantee he will get there. He's only on 2355 days so far, so if he does get to 100 games, he'll do it in under 4000 days.

Last Saturday in March, 2014 will be 2535 days.
Last Saturday in August, 2014 will be 2689 days.
First Friday in April, 2018 will be 4004 days.

Speaking of closely-related surnames... Perth's great teams of the late 1960s had the following play together:

Ian MILLER
John MILLS
Ray MILLS
Ross MILLSON

Nah, I reckon if he can't get through next year without injury then he'll be delisted. If he makes it through next year without injury, then he'll get to the 100 mark soon.

Hope they didn't all have 'Millsy' as their nickname!

All at the same time is pretty amazing.

And grant you Red and Black the four Danihers, i am sure that's the record as the McShane brothers at Geelong at the start of VFL history back in 1897, i think only three played in the VFL, more may have played together pre 1897 in the then VFA.

Interesting how history is rewritten.
Some players on your listing representing Sy - Assume that is Sydney, yet their playing days were before Sydney existed.

They were obviously South Melbourne players.

Why can't the official records recognise South Melbourne.

A few people have pointed this out over the years. I could code around it but it gets a bit messy, e.g. some players from the 80's would be "SM/Sy". Since the club's lineage is unbroken, I assume everyone understands which club is being referred to and have settled on using e.g. "Sy" for all South Melbourne references, for the sake of simplicity. (I adopted the two-letter club codes used by Rogers in Every Game Ever Played.)

NB The club designations are from my database and not any "official" source. e.g. *Paul* who runs the AFL Tables website distinguishes between the Brisbane Bears and Lions, whereas the AFL does not (nor do I).

You could always go with Sw (Swans), Br (Brisbane) and Bu (Bulldogs) rather than worrying about SM/Sy, BB/BL and Fo/WB respectively.

Except that South Melbourne/Sydney were not always the Swans, and Footscray/Western Bulldogs were not always the Bulldogs!

^Which I consider a minor point relative to the other issue.

Well I think it is the same issue.

Anyway, the Sydney Swans Football Club IS the South Melbourne Football Club.
