hehehe... 5th round, Westhoff..... What an astute pick.
3rd & 4th rounds too ...
3th Round:
Broadbent, O'Shea, Carlile
4th Round:

If a couple of the picks from this year, and a couple from last year can match these blokes, then we well and truly extend our premiership window!

Of these players, the ones marked in bold were further down the list than they may have been due to GCS and GWS concessions.

Other way round. If the 17 year olds and zone players had entered the draft, then the bolded players might not have been so high up the order. Eg Polec was pick 5 in 2010 but if a few 17 year olds who went to GC in 2009 - if they had gone into the 2010 draft as 18 year olds, Polec might have come in at 8,9 or 10.

I heard Choco was the one that was very keen on Hoff

Yeah, Matt Westhoff. Choco had a great talent for claiming credit for any successful left-field selection at Port but was willing to share the love for the fizzers.

Mick Moylan identified Justin Westhoff as one of his favourite picks in his time at Port.

AFL recruiters reveal their favourite picks
We liked his athleticism for a start and liked the fact he was playing senior football in a forward pocket with up the ground cameos at Central District. And we pretty much had someone watching him every week. You almost had to go along to wait for a 5-10 minute patch where he was really involved to understand what he was about. He wasn’t a high stats representation but you kept thinking the people at Central kept picking him. What you see now is what you saw in brief moments back then. So don’t always look at the stats sheet.
AFL recruiters reveal their favourite picks

I put this in MrTripleC's 225 days of season 2013 thread almost 2 years ago - but it has some relevance here as we will be competing with the new sides in 2 or 3 time for a flag. I have updated it for seasons 2013 and 2014.

There is always discussion about the 2 new teams being able to win a flag this decade develops. Though about how the 4 teams from the 2 traditional footy states went in their first 8 seasons and how things have changed since the 1970's with respect to more teams spreading round the flags and GF's.

WCE.. prelim final 4th year, GF 5th, Flag 6th and 8th ( finals 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th)
Crows prelim final 3rd year, GF and Flag 7th and 8th (finals 3rd, 7th and 8th)
Port... prelim final 6th and 7th years, GF and Flag 8th [GF 11th] (finals 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th)
Freo.. prelim final in 12th and GF in 19th (finals in 9th and 12th)

1970's
4 teams won flags
Clt 70, 72, 79 (lost 73) won 1 flag in the 60's
Haw 71, 76, 78 (lost 75) won 1 flag in the 60's
Rich 73, 74 (lost 72) won 2 flags in the 60's
North 75, 77 (lost 74, 76, 78)
2 other teams lost GF with no flag
Coll 70, 77, 79
St K 71 won 1 flag in 60's

1980's
4 teams won flags
Rich 80 (lost 82) won 2 flags in the 70's
Clt 81, 82, 87 (lost 86) won 3 flags in the 70's
Haw 83, 86, 88, 89 (lost 84, 85, 87) won 3 flags in the 70's
Ess 84, 85 (lost 83)
3 other teams lost GF with no flag
Coll 80, 81
Mel 88
Gee 89

1990's
7 teams won flags
Coll 90
Haw 91 won 4 flags in the 80's
WCE 92, 94 (lost 91)
Ess 93 (lost 90) won 2 flags in the 80's
Clt 95 (lost 93, 99) won 2 flags in the 80's
NM 96, 99 (lost 98)
Adl 97, 98
3 other teams lost GF with no flag
Gee 92, 94, 95
Syd 96
St K 97

2000's
7 teams won flags
Ess 00 (lost 01) won 1 flag in the 90's
Bris 01, 02, 03 (lost 04)
PA 04 (lost 07)
Syd 05 (lost 06)
WCE 06 (lost 05) won 2 flags in the 90's
Gee 07,09 (lost 08)
Haw 08 won 1 flag in the 90's
3 other teams lost GF with no flag
Mel 00
Coll 02, 03
St K 09

2010's
4 teams have won flags
Coll 10 (lost 11)
Gee 11 won 2 flags in the 00's
Syd 12 (lost 14) won 1 flag in the 00's
Haw 13, 14 won (lost 12) won 1 flag in the 00's
2 other teams lost GF with no flag
St K 10
Freo 13

So given the patterns of the last 4 decades and half of this decade the likelihood this decade is that;
7 maybe 8 teams will win flags ie 3 or 4 more teams to go and
3 teams loose a GF without winning a flag ie 1 more to go and
That probably no more teams that won a flag in the 2000's will win a flag in the 2010's and
That at least 1 team and probably 2 will win multiple flags and one will lose multiple GF's.

......

Trying to get my head around that! ... Does that mean Port probably will not not win a flag?:(

A Roughhead injury would probably be the most serious for Hawthorn. We nearly certainly would have won the prelim but for Roughhead. Hodge also meant a lot to them but the loss of an elite midfielder can be minimized by a good team. The loss of a goalkicker is much more difficult to cover.

Any reason for highlighting 2001,6 & 8 in yellow REH?
The 3 superdrafts as the recruiting insiders have dubbed them and to highlight what each side has left from them.

It highlights how well Hawthorn have recruited from other clubs. 13 players over 9 years and all of them still on their list.

No its 11 players over 6 drafts ie 2009-14 in my chart. Frawley and O'Rouke shouldnt have been in brown in the section when drafted by other clubs and Im not sure if Anderson was a zone trade player from NT like Neade with the GWS in 2012 but he should be the 11th player in that section.

If you read my earlier posts thru this thread I break down where the 22 players of each of the Hawks last 3 premierships have made their way to the club. They have also done well out of rookies the last few years

If Roughhead gets injured and Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne fall away rapidly/retire they will be a very different team.
They only need a couple to drop away. The Hawks have good depth, which served them well last year, but they had their best team come finals. If you were a betting person it'd be smarter to put money on all those players not being available AND all the older ones not dropping off.

What's happened to Geelong's 3 flag's and 4 GF's dynasty, 4 years after their last flag and GF. Between 2007-2014 they finished top 4 in 7 of those 8 years and made 6 PFs with 5 consecutive between 2007-2011.

The Hawks who probably won a flag 2 years early but have had 4 great years and if they make the PF this year that's 5 consecutive years.

Whatever happened to Clinton Young? He went to Collingwood but that was at least 2 seasons ago.
