I'll elaborate further then - Carlton put Jeffy on the trade table because Mick didn't want to play him because Jeffy wasn't playing well, hence Jeffy was happy to go.

In other words, it wasn't solely Jeffy's decision to go.

Better?

Dear Jeffy,
Sad to see u go. Didn't wanna see u go. Understand why ur going. Purely mutual decision. Hope all sorts itself for u personally. U gave us awesome moments and based on 2014, showed us footballers are people too. Dunno what u r going thru off-field, but it looks to have effected u on-field. All the best at the Dee's, just not against us.
Get urself right and you'll be alright.
Good luck, goodbye and thank you.
Go Blues!

Not really. Mick is right not to play him if he wasn't playing well. That's not Micks fault if Jeffy was out of form.

Fwiw, I actually think Jeffy asked for the change of scenery. He nominated Melbourne and we facilitated the trade as easily as we could for him. He never wanted to stay at Carlton next season.

As you say, different opinions and all that.

Mick played him nine times, for very little return and more than a few embarrassing displays. He can't complain we didn't support him professionally - not to mention monetarily. Not many other players would get that many chances to regain form. Even at VFL level he was crap.

He actually deserved to be kicking the Saturday morning dew off Preston Oval he was that bad.

I don't know how he thinks changing clubs will improve his life. He's starting from scratch with a new club and no credit in the bank. He won't get nine games to find touch even at Melbourne. Roos isn't any softer than Mick.

I hope we keep Mitch - especially after the Jeffy fire sale. He's more passion than talent, but passion's something we could use more of.

Right on Alec. My sentiments too. For all his faults, Robbo gives us what a good percentage the rest of team can't.....good ol' MONGREL. Also known as 'campaign'.
I hope we keep Mitch. Give him 1 more year, heavily incentive based.
"Smithers, release the Mitch!"

This thread is hilarious...but it's probably something that's missing from TC - so I'll give it a go...

Dear David Honybun,

Like most supporters - your name stood out before your strapping 196cm frame did. I'll never forget the morning in 1983 when I turned the page of the newspaper to see the headline 'Coleambally Giant off to Carlton'. I had no idea where Coleamabally was...so I asked my Dad and he had no idea either. My oldest sister had received an A in Geography so surely she would know...wearing leg-warmers, fingerless gloves and a pink feather in her hair - I interrupted her Jazz dancing to Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' to enquire about the whereabout of one 'Coleambally'... 'Get out of my room you little s**t!' came the reply which was the most she had spoken to me in 3 months. It was a good day. However no matter how hard I looked at my Readers Digest World Atlas, Coleambally didn't appear.

But there were giants in Coleambally - and one was coming to Carlton.

I watched you in the reserves, running straight at the ball at centre bounces...a sight to behold. Wearing number 31 it was surely only a matter of time before a senior call-up. Then 1984 arrived. With the retirement of one Michael Clifford Fitzpatrick the club had bestowed the number 3 to you. An outstanding pre-season saw you rewarded with a game against North Melbourne in Round 1. You swapped the ruck duties with Justin Madden in perfect tandem and were both named in the best in a 137-point thumping of the insipid Kangaroos. Named in the best the following week against Fitzroy - you kept Wow Jones and Scott Howell firmly entrenched in the magoos. Then you were badly outpointed by Geelong's John Mossop in Round 3...a loss to the Cats and it was back to the reserves. Even when Madden received a 2 week ban in Round 5 - Jones and Howell were given the nod in preference.

Recalled for the Round 7 game against the Dees, you broke even with Peter Moore in the ruck. Significantly, you rucked alone for most of the day and Moore would bizarrely receive 2 Brownlow votes go on to win the 1984 Brownlow Medal. Out of the side again in Round 8 with injury - you would return in Round 9 only to be smashed by Simon Madden, Paul Salmon and Roger Merrett to the tune of 47 points at Windy Hill. At that was it. That was your career at Carlton. Plenty of good games in the reserves in 1985 - but you never broke into the line-up again. Madden had a stellar year and new kid on the block Rhett Baynes was thought to be more useful...my dreams of you rucking for the Blues for a decade were dashed and at the end of 1985 you were shipped off to Arden St...and but for a brief moment of sadness - once gone - you were forgetten. Put into the pile of 'couldabeen'

With Carlton achieving some success - 'Honybun' didn't enter the vernacular. Indeed, I hadn't given much though to the Coleambally Giant until you popped up playing for Richmond at the end of the 80's. David Cloke and General Mark Lee were nearing the end and it seemed a good fit for you.

But then Round 10, 1990 came. David Cloke's 300th. Both teams were now on the slide. Jesaulenko vs Bartlett in coaches box...and winter had come early to the MCG. You played forward all day - and kept popping up - taking key marks, kicking straight, presenting well. David Kernahan had been moved off you early and Silvagni was no match for you either. You kicked 6 goals for the day.

We went down by 23 points. You broke my heart David...why...WHY?! Why hadn't we played you more in the 80's. Why didn't you tell Gavin Exell, Warren McKenzie and Darren Ogier to give you more space in the reserves forward line during 1984? You coulda been a contender. You coulda been somebody....

Awesome read Doc Sherrin, ******* awesome!!!

Every time I go to the hot bread shop on a Sunday morning i think of Honeybun!!

Love ya work Doc Sherrin!
It was a mystery to me back then why DH (unfortunate initials ) was not persisted with. You have brought it all back! Certainly the rise of Justin Madden wouldn't have helped, but there was plenty more latitude for keeping extra players on the list in those days than there is now. Besides, Honeybun was a ruckman/KP, while Harry was pretty much a specialist ruckman, so it's not as if they were competing for the same role.

Baynes of course - the player who supposedly supplanted him - didn't last long either, due to his mental issues which sadly proved fatal for him in the end.
A sad waste for both players - both big strong units who could have done well with more luck and had the club persisted with them.

Certainly from 1986, with the arrival of Sticks Kernahan and Jon Dorotich, we were well stocked in the KP department, so there were no real regrets for us at the time.

When did Perter Sartori start with the Blues??
