Most overrated player (right now and all time)

Are we talking 'overrated' or 'overhyped'?

The football media make up a small selection of the AFL watching public, and they ultimately are about entertainment over substance, which we all understand.

When Cyril Rioli gets lauded for playing the "best 12 possession game of all time" by a few media types, that's clear over-hype. But, when the average football follower thinks that Rioli is nothing more than a flash in the pan, streaky small forward, that makes him underrated.

I could say the same for a certain other player, but I'd rather not open that can of dreadlocks again, for fear of upsetting the remaining zealots who haven't accepted reality yet.

Just to mention my own team, Andrew Gaff is overrated. Elliot Yeo is overrated as well, mainly due to potential over substance.

Right now:

Luke Hodge - loose half back flanker and a thug sniper, not even in the same class as Voss, Hird Buckley, Judd
Sam Mitchell - slow, can't handle a tag, can't tackle, can't kick goals, thug sniper
Cyril Rioli - flashy excitement machine who produces one or two highlights and nothing else
Jarryd Roughead - flat track bully
Josh Gibson - loose back man & handy role player who gets destroyed in the one on ones
Jordan Lewis - sniping thug s**t truck of a midfielder
Grant Birchall - loose chip scab half back, looks good in a top side, but wouldn't be as effective for a bottom 4 team
Jack Gunston - average forward who would be s**t in a bottom 8 side
Shaun Burgoyne - too old, doesn't do much, he is being carried in a good team
Luke Breust - soft chip scab half forward who doesn't do much
Ben McEvoy - s**t truck
Paul Puopololol - a hack who would be exposed in a bottom team
Liam Shiels - a hack who will be exposed once Mitchell, Burgoyne, Lewis and Hodge retire
Isaac Smith - a soft chip scab receiver who only looks good playing alongside Lewis, Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne, etc
Ben Stratton - average backman who has benefitted from playing in a good backline alongside Lake, Frawley and Gibson
James Frawley - a hack, not worth $600k a year or the #3 draft pick Melbourne got, not even the best defender for his own team
Bradley Hill - a soft, pea-hearted chip scab who doesn't win his own ball and can't kick
Taylor Duryea - a journeyman hack who is lucky to get a game
Matt Suckling - a journeyman hack with a good left foot who is lucky to get a game
Ryan Schoenmakers - if he played for any other club, he would be delisted, only stays on Hawthorn's because of the good players around him
David Hale - retired, but he was a useless s**t truck of a ruckman and not much good up forward either
Brian Lake - retired, but he was washed-up thug who was protected at FB by Gibson, Frawley, Stratton, Birchall and Burgoyne

The past three premierships have caused all of these guys to be massively overrated. They've collectively benefitted from playing in a weakened AFL competition and receive a massive home ground advantage in September. They would all be exposed as thug snipers and hacks if they played for a bottom team and weren't looked after by the AFL and umpires.

All time:

Leigh Matthews - glorified thug sniper, handy goal sneak, not good for much else
Peter Hudson - soft, pea-hearted chip scab of a full forward
Michael Tuck - the only reason people think he was good was because he played 426 games (longevity =/= quality)
Jason Dunstall - a plodder FF who only looked good because he received silver service from the Hawthorn midfield
Dermott Brereton - glorified thug sniper who only looked good because he played for a top side
Robert DiPierdomenico - glorified thug sniper, worst Brownlow Medallist ever
Peter Knights - flashy excitement machine who took a few speckies and didn't do much else
Don Scott - he was a plodding s**t truck of a ruckman and glorified thug sniper who carried a leather purse
Shane Crawford - flashy girly receiver who is only rated because of his work for Channel 9 & The Footy Show
John Platten - average rover (with s**t hair), only looked good because he played in a top side, 2nd worst Brownlow Medallist ever
Buddy Franklin - inconsistent, selfish flashy cherry picker forward who couldn't mark and was a ticking time bomb drug addict
Brad Sewell - s**t truck journeyman who couldn't kick
Terry Wallace - s**t truck journeyman who couldn't kick
Gary Buckenara - soft chip scab half forward who didn't do much
Gary Ayres - a sniping thug who benefitted from playing alongside Langford, Mew, Collins and Tuck
Chris Mew - a journeyman defender who benefitted from playing alongside Langford, Ayres, Collins and Tuck
Chris Langford - a journeyman defender who benefitted from playing alongside Mew, Ayres, Collins and Tuck
Trent Croad - useless s**t truck of a defender
Mark Williams - soft, pea-hearted chip scab of a forward pocket, only noticed because of his stupid goal celebrations
Paul Salmon - soft, pea-hearted ruckman who was alright at Essendon
Darren Jarman - lazy, selfish half forward who became a good player at Adelaide

I'm sure there is one out there but can't find it atm. Interested to see what people think!

Clearly right now it's Trent Cotchin.

All time would have to be Chris Grant.
You can't have seen Chris Grant play. Superstar.

Taylor is a strange nomination. Absolute star. Quintessential swingman.

Star defender for me, but his forward prowess is overrated. Kicked a couple of bags against s**t teams a couple years back, now a 'quintessential' swingman?
Besides the point anyway, he's a good enough defender to make it as 'not overrated' regardless of other positions.

If anyone rated Carlisle (which I don't think they do) he would have to be the most overrated player right now. Was no way worth a first round draft pick. Essendon robbed the saints on that one.

Don't think they paid a first rounder for Carlisle the forward. They paid a first rounder for Carlisle the defender who showed oodles of talent as a youngster a couple of years back. If he's used as a forward then yeah that's ridiculous considering Riewoldt + Bruce + McCartin.

Oh poor Hawks so persecuted such hatred etc.

Also, Suckling is a soft hack and Hill is a soft squibb.

From Carlton fans
Current: Dylan Buckley - always mentioned as a future star but he's a long way behind other players his age throughout the league
Former: Kouta - no denying his talent, but his output is overrated. Didn't dominate the comp for years like you'd think according to some fans.

For me throughout the league
Current: Charlie Dixon (pretty much any traded player as they are all hailed the new messiah)
Past: Garry Hocking (edit: maybe I'll have to go with Timmy from Thomastown and say Wayne Campbell too)

Disagree. All time surely it is Jack Dyer. His name was big but I never heard any players from distant past rate him with the likes of Bob Pratt, Laurie Nash, Dick Reynolds or Haydn Bunton. He was big in name from being a tv personality and radio caller on 3KZ for games. He was a very entertaining caller back in his day. "If you don't mind umpire"
I famously remember him calling Peter Bosustow just a good ordinary player on debut...lol.
Won goal and mark of year in same year and played in back to back premierships soon after.

I will give you present of the where is Trent guy.
