Ashman with Sexton a close second and Vinny English running third for me! Loved the little goal sneak Ashman who from memory could also take a decent mark for his size. Loved Sexton through the 90's and he was as consistent as they came.

Not an overly successful number for the Blues and surprised to see Ashman and Sexton never won a B&F?

Rod Ashman.
What a great little rover this bloke was. Tough as nails, knew where the goals were, and one of the few blokes who wore a helmet.

I think it was 1980 he won every newspaper award but came only second in the Brownlow. He was the leader of the famed "mosquito squad" which propelled us to flags in 1979, 81 and 82. It is to be remembered that the mosquito squad itself was so strong that a dual Brownlow medallist was unable to clinch a spot in the team and had to go elsewhere to get a game. Fortunately diesel returned to win us another flag. That is how great a champion Rod Ashman was.

I loved Sexton too. When he started he was a fringe player. But with each new season his game went up a notch such that by mid-career he had become a very dependable defender. Good as he was and as much fun as it was to watch him grow, he has to come second to Ashman.

Asho would be my all time favourite in this jumper. Adopted the helmet after concerns over the hits to the scone he was copping.

Ashman and Jimmy Buckley - those two goals in time on of the third quarter of the 1981 GF. Stopped Collingwood in their tracks, stole the momentum and prepared the way for us to steamroll the Pies in the final quarter!

Des English is surprised by this.

Ton of time for Sexton.

Always played above his weight/height, yet was a proto-type rebounder, terrific on the intercept, sure hands, him and SoS down back, with Ang, Mil, and even Manton floating back gave me confidence.

Rod Ashman was a gun, had little man syndrome, but his ball getting and balance (and how many goals did he dink from a forward pocket?) was fantastic. Reckon he was robbed in the '81 Brownlow, but he stands tall in the Pantheon of Carlton Legends.

I remember as a youngster, me and my brother were camping overnight in the line outside Princes Park for Grand Final tickets, and the Club invited quite a few of us into a room/bar in the Heatley where a bunch of blokes were watching Ashy go for the Brownlow. I reckon it was 81 or 82.

Did the overnight Princes Park sleep in 79, 81 and 82. All winning efforts with the mighty mosquito fleet of which Ashy was a leader.

You're right, 81. He came second (21 votes) to Barry Round & Bernie Quinlan (22 votes).

Remember that night well. We were the same queued for tickets and someone came out and asked us if we wanted to watch the Brownlow in the club.
Spending the night in Princes Park talking about the mighty Blues to strangers was great fun. Of course it helped having a realistic expectation of winning.
Ashman was unstoppable that year.
