Pies look at own stadium

Soccer clubs in europe have their own ground because some play up to thirty games in winter, they like a very smooth pitch for top class soccer and dont even train on the field to protect it. Thats why man u and the like have maybe nine pitches in their training facility. Abd its why they are reluctant to share

We just dont have those issues

Yeah the "smooth pitch" is the reason why clubs have their own stadium. This is definitely not a reason and you'll find the vast majority of pitches in the top European league all are "smooth."

I think maximising revenue would be more of a reason mate.

Because they want to build their own facility they said that when the brought the club. As I said the owners have more dollars than sense

They wouldn't want an oval though - soccer hates oval configurations.

are you kidding? WAFC just made a number of redundancies and are now hitting up the WAFL clubs for 50k each to pay channel 7 to broadcast the WAFL. its not in good shape

many WAFL clubs are posting big losses. for instance south freo posted a 500k+ loss. basically all wafl clubs bar 1 or 2 post losses each year

If a local footy club is losing $500k there's some serious mismanagement going on.

Why don't they put some of the profits into footy programs (boys and girls) in Collingwood schools? Sure, they won't get any benefit out of it - but it would be a good thing to do.
Richmond could lead the way with this and if it works then I hope Collingwood copies it.
Start demanding the RFC do this immediately.

If they have so much money they could do what Barca used to do, forgo a major sponsorship and donate the space on their jumper to charity?

Some good ideas here

This is simply Eddie pre-positioning on one potential scenario, should the AFL ever seriously embark on building a new stadium in Melbourne, Collingwood are pitching the tent at the head of the box office line long before the tickets officially go on sale.

That way they can become the new stadium anchor tenant to an AFL funded venture and Eddie can strike a lucrative stadium deal.

Its fair to say real estate is not what we do best

Not sure how many houses they bought around Vic Park during maggie land, but if they managed to hold on to them, they would be worth a squillion by now.

Seems to be a lot of moern units around there now.

And of course the pubs fiasco, which has actually turned out alright.

There is no parking almost impossible to get to on public transport and the stands are s**t

I hear different people saying different things about getting to and from there, stands can be fixed if the will is there.

parking smarking

It was horrible to get to. I used to have to drive in, and missed multiple Carlton vs Richmond games because the game had sold out or there was no parking available (and I'm talking an hour before the game)

Melbourne doesnt need a third stadium.Theres no reason why the small games cant be played at Docklands

And if we did have a third ground it should be in Geelong (by another team sharing the Cattery for a few games per year) or Ballarat (Dogs to partly relocate there)
Melbourne does need another ground, ground sharing is no good better off having our own ground. Why should Melbourne clubs play home games outside the city and alienate our fans

It is part of the reason. A smooth pitch is important to protect the investment in players. No use paying top dollar for players if the ball plays unpredictably on the pitch. Conversely, poor pitches is a big reason why top teams often struggle away at minnow clubs in the FA Cup. Silky smooth ball play doesn't work too well on mud.

Owning the dirt is the only way to control it. Our multi use/ground share models perform terribly in Australia. Grounds like Newcastle rarely produce a decent pitch for the a-league.

who pays the half a billion plus?

ELP grounds are significantly subsidized by the massive TV money their game gets. Ours gets nothing near that

A third stadium also just makes the viability of Etihad even more precarious

To get enough games to make it viable IMO the Pies would need to play ALL 11 there, but that would mean half there members no longer getting access to home games, and losing the marquee event on ANZAC Day

Why would we lose the ANZAC day game just need a big stadium, even if we did lose the ANZAC game we would still make more money at our own venue. TV money is only going to increase would like it if clubs could negotiate their own deals like in the US.

you think the AFL would really schedule one of its marquee games at a 30-40k venue?

you also think the AFL is going to release its grips on the media rights to the clubs individually?

both are even more unrealistic than the notion of the Pies building their own stadium for their home games

Things change all the time why would we build a stadium of only 30k would be at least 60k if we built one. You need to look at the long game we are contracted to play our home games at the MCG for another 22 seasons so 2038 is the earliest we could have our own ground. 22 years ago no one would have believed you if you told them that in 20 year they will be paying North of 1 billion dollars for the tv rights
