Steelers suspend Rashard Mendenhall

350x-316.jpg

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has gone from the doghouse to the outhouse.

Mendenhall, recently demoted to third string, has been suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. The one-game ban will cost Mendenhall more than $41,000.

He has been replaced by Baron Batch, a practice-squad player who was on the roster for the team’s first 10 games of 2012.

The move further confirms that Mendenhall won’t be back with the team in 2013. He arrived in Pittsburgh in 2008, as a first-round draft pick.

==========

Mendenhall didn’t show up for Sunday’s game

mendenhall.jpg

Plenty of times, players are accused of not showing up for a given game. In most cases, the player was physically present.

As to Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, he literally didn’t show up for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mendenhall was a no-show for the game, failing to arrive after being told he wouldn’t be on the active game-day roster.

As a result, Mendenhall will not appeal the suspension, which will cost him more than $41,000 in lost pay.

“What’s happened, happened,” agent Mike McCartney told Bouchette. “When I spoke to Rashard, I know he is very excited next Monday to rejoin his teammates. He’s going to come back with great energy to do everything he can to help the Pittsburgh Steelers win football games.”

Mendenhall also needs to help himself. In March, he’ll be a free agent, hitting a market that has gone soft when it comes to running back.Though it may not be too late for Mendenhall to help the Steelers, it’s probably too late for him to boost his own chances to get anything more than a one-year, low-money deal.

Kevin Colbert promises changes in Pittsburgh

300x-44.jpg

The Steelers have had plenty of success over the course of their history, but that doesn’t make them any different from anyone else when they miss the playoffs.

Changes come when teams fall short of the postseason and that’s just what General Manager Kevin Colbert says is coming to Pittsburgh this offseason. Colbert suggested that some of the changes could have been made in past years, but that this season’s results meant they have to be made now.

“When you’re 12-4 and a playoff team, sometimes you get mesmerized by your success and you get a little reluctant to change,” Colbert said, via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If we don’t change a roster that produced 8-8, we’d be silly to expect a better result.”

Colbert said he didn’t expect to use the franchise tag this year and suggested that the team would wait to see what the market dictated before re-signing any of their own free agents. Wide receiver Mike Wallace, cornerback Keenan Lewis and running back Rashard Mendenhall are some of the Steelers set to become free agents after the season.

There weren’t many specifics about what kind of changes the Steelers might be making, although Colbert did single out the running game “didn’t produce the way we anticipated.” He also confirmed that Chris Rainey won’t be part of the solution that problem by saying that the decision to waive Rainey as soon as possible will not be reversed.

Colbert: Steelers assured of change

On a typically blustery mid-January day in Pittsburgh, very atypical winds of change were swirling around the Steelers‘ offices at 3400 South Water St. on the South Side.

Making two dozen references to an 8-8 record he called “unacceptable” and “disappointing,” general manager Kevin Colbert said the Steelers will rework some contracts and terminate others to create enough salary cap space to begin meaningful change.

“You make decisions to sustain or make decisions to change,” Colbert said Wednesday during a half-hour interview. “This year we have to make decisions to change.”

To not change, Colbert said, would be an open invitation to more mediocrity.

“When you‘re 12-4 and a playoff team, sometimes you get mesmerized by your success and are a little reluctant to change,” Colbert said. “If we don‘t change the roster that produced 8-8, we should expect the same. It would be silly to expect a better result with the same group of guys.”

Those changes began last week with the waiving of running back Chris Rainey after police in Florida said they charged him for slapping his girlfriend. The move doesn‘t become official until Feb. 4 but, Colbert said, was made because Rainey “has lost the trust of the organization.”

The Steelers also appear to have lost faith in a group of running backs — Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman, Rashard Mendenhall — that produced the franchise‘s second-worst rushing yardage since 1978.

Mendenhall, who skipped a December game after being told he wouldn‘t play, is all but certain to leave as a free agent. Colbert called Mendenhall‘s decision to skip a game “unacceptable.”

As for the others, Colbert said, “Where we were in the running game was indicative of the talent at the position. They‘re part of the 8-8. ... That group of players didn‘t produce like we anticipated.”

The Steelers apparently won‘t try to re-sign their unrestricted free agents — including Mike Wallace, Keenan Lewis, Max Starks, Casey Hampton, Larry Foote and Ramon Foster — until their value has been established on the open market in mid-March.

“We aren‘t down the road with any of our guys,” he said, adding, “We aren‘t married to any of these guys.”

They also won‘t employ a franchise or transition tag as an expensive way to assure a player‘s return. Franchising Lewis, for example, would cost $10.66 million.

“In my mind, when you‘re 8-8, I don‘t think you have too many franchise players,” Colbert said.

While the Steelers are an estimated $12 million over the projected $121 million salary cap, Colbert calls the situation “doable” and not that much different from any other offseason.

“But if you terminate someone, you‘d better have a replacement,” he said. “If you extend someone, you have to have confidence that player will see it out. If you restructure, you‘d better be careful going forward you don‘t hurt yourself cap-wise just borrowing against a credit card.”

Colbert also said:

• The Steelers will explore drafting a quarterback above the late rounds to provide a younger backup to Ben Roethlisberger.

• He saw no signs of disagreement between Roethlisberger and offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

• The Steelers aren‘t close to the remaining playoff teams, even the Ravens, with whom they played a pair of 3-point games. “We haven‘t played since the first week of January, and they‘re still playing.”

• The conservative approach to free agency is something that won‘t change. “We have to be open to that, but at what cost?” he said. “If we need this player to win, is it then going to cost us these two?”

• He wouldn‘t theorize why outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley‘s play fell off. He wouldn‘t blame weight, saying Woodley has been big — and productive — since high school.

Note: The Steelers signed cornerback Justin King to a one-year contract. The former Gateway High and Penn State star was on the 53-man roster for the final two games but did not play. He was cut by the Colts earlier in the season. He played his first three seasons with the Rams, starting 19 games.

2013NFLSteelersschedule_zps57f0f1ee.jpg

Like any given season... there are enough games / opponents capable of beating with a half a chance to win the division but strangely enough... I'm feeling that the glass is half empty with not much scope for a serious tilt of getting to the Big Dance.

EDIT: Expanding from the above:

steelers2013schedule.jpg

Four noted prime time games.. :thumbsu:

SCHEDULE LOWDOWN: MY take..

Tricky season opener.. won three of the last four against Titans including the season opener in 2009 which was edge of seat stuff with turnovers near goal-line and OT. Last time Steelers lost @ home was 2003. Since then 4-2 Steelers. Polamalu has been a playmaker in many Titans games.
Hopefully Troy is healthy come Week 1.

Cinci are the AFC dark horses IMHO. I won a slab from Chism last season because I was adamant Cinci would go back-to-back play-offs last year. Interesting to see an early homecoming for James Harrison who will be lining up for the Bengals on MNF. Smart scheduling.

Last time Steelers played @ Soldier Field... Cutler played LIGHTS OUT .. Steelers blew limited chances and that was the game in the wet for an early season 17-14 loss. Need to beat the likes of the Bears who are seemingly a bogey team (17-7-1 in the series) although the Steelers strung three in a row before the loss in 2009.

The Steelers first trip to London.. (as a road team) could be to the Steelers advantage with the grass surface. Looking to stretch the winning streak to four as the Vikings last tasted success in the '95 campaign when an infuriated Bill Cowher was too busy running on the field shoving the '12 men on the field screen scan' in the ref's top pocket. No wonder the Vikes put up 44 points. Cheated. ;)

Last time the Steelers tasted success @ the Meadowlands vs the Jets.. the Twin Towers were still standing.. that has to change if the Steelers want to press for their second division title in five seasons.

The annual grudge 'smashmouth' stoush vs the Ravens will keep living up to the highly anticipated hype.. No fear playing in Baltimore as the Steelers are 3-2 in last five road trips to the Ratbirds nest.

DANGER GAME... bloody Raiders have tripped the Steelers up in three of the last four including last season's unimpressive CHOKE where the Steelers D allowed too many points after the Steelers led by 10 at the last change. Last time Steelers won in the Black Hole.. the year Bill Cowher was a SB coach. Stop snickering Raider fans. We're gonna chew you up this season and spit you out!!

The Steelers play-off nemesis, Patriots, are definitely a play-off defying match up rehearsal opponent. Steelers yet to defeat Tom Brady behind centre when on the road. Brady is 7-2 vs Steelers. Last played Patriots in 2011 in da 'Burgh in which the Steelers D showed up to smother Brady in a rare loss to the Steelers. MASSIVE TEST.

A game that shouldn't be a foregone conclusion, Buffalo @ home.. last time the Steelers dodged two bullets vs Bills (2010) to squeak out a gritty OT win on the road. Steelers hope to extend the winning streak to five here. Bills haven't won in 'Burgh since 1992 which was Cowher's first campaign as HC (a gutting Divisional play-off loss).

The Lions have only won once in the last eight tries vs the Steelers...and that game they did, was the controversial bungled OT coin-toss game back in '98 in Detroit. I remember it well.
Steelers need to keep their foot on the opponents throat here to preserve the drought of where it's been 57 years since the Lions haven't won in da 'Burgh.

I never take Browns games lightly. The Browns are tough customers. They bring out the laziness out and make the Steeler playmakers accountable. Under Mike Tomlin, the Browns have claimed two of 12 games but two of the last four have been @ the Dawg Pound. This GAME isn't for the faint hearted. I get nervous with the Browns. Why? Aside 2010.. there is one Browns game at least that the Steelers need to DIG DEEP to find that Houdini play to conjure a win. Last season, the Steelers were horrific with a soul destroying eight turnovers given up (No Big Ben) but man... even with #7 behind centre... the Browns can be exhaustingily ruff-ruff tough.

Ravens visit Pittsburgh.. They will try for three wins in a row. Flacco has won three of the last four games here so its not like the home field advantage plays any part. Gotta be hard-earned.

The homecoming for Mike Butterfingers Wallace. This will be a doozy. Why? It'll be December and Mike Wallace has gone on record in saying he didn't like the cold conditions. Steelers riding on a five game winning streak. It's been 22 years since the Fins tasted success in da 'Burgh.

Second Primetime game vs Cinci in the same season!! Goodell getting his s**t together. :p
Knows the Bungles & the Steelers will entertain the masses with James Harrison second homecoming and the likely chance that the winner gets their nose in front in the Divisional race.

The SB XLV loss still burns in many Steeler fans hearts. Beating the Packers on the road would be just the inspiring way to get a leg up to try make the play-offs (if possible) and/or tripping up the Packers play-off chances. Steelers have won three on the trot in regular season meetings.

This is like the fifth time in the last six seasons the Steelers meet the Browns in the season finale.. all blow-outs IIRC. Hopefully Tomlin's men continue knocking the stuffing out of those pesky Browns.

R6 PICK #206 LB VINCE WILLIAMS / FLORIDA STATE

R7 PICK #206 DE NICHOLAS WILLIAMS / SAMFORD
* Acquired 14th pick (111th overall) in the fourth round via a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers traded their 2014 third-round selection in return for the 111th
overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Alot of good talk about the the Steelers late draft pick Vince Williams.
Admittedly I should watch more College regardless how lacklustre it can get at times.

 Emry Hunt pisses on the Landry Jones pick!!

Emory Hunt is an idiot. Landry Jones is an excellent QB prospect.

:D I'm a fan already. Emory probably did a Chism when he watched Landry Jones as what Chism did when he slagged the beejeezus outta Cam Newton (poor Bowl game) and I believe you weren't sold on Cam either. ;)

I wasnt sold on Newton or Griffin....but Jones is an excellent drop back passer, in a league where drop back passers are going to continue to be the type of QB to offer a franchise the best opportunity at winning a championship.

I recall reading up on Big Ben when the Steelers drafted him and all the reviews were 'Jim Kelly' kinda QB talk which was fine with me.. just never really was a Jim Kelly fan until the end when you of course start appreciating veteran players a whole lot more but when Ray Lewis broken Tommy Maddox arm in the season opener of 2004 that forced Bill Cowher to throw Big Ben into the deep end.. was quite a surreal ride for Steeler Nation. To win his next first 13 starts and claim the NFL record for a rookie just sounds crazy looking back. Who knows, Jones could well be forced to be the next deer in headlights before too long.

Everybody loves NFL throwback uniforms, but some are more divisive than others. The Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, unveiled the beauties depicted above last season to commemorate the franchise's 80th anniversary. They wore them in two games against the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens and, for better or worse, it was quite a sight to behold.

The Steelers are bringing the bumblebee uniforms back this season, too, though it will be for just one game -- against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 7. The uniforms allegedly date back to 1934, though there is no confirmation whether or not they were stolen from a prison chain gang

Steelers face irrelevance in Pittsburgh

350x-6.jpg

The Steelers will be out of sight until October 13. Given the rest of the sports landscape in Pittsburgh, they’ll also be out of mind.

After the first 0-4 start since 1968, the year before Chuck Noll became the team’s head coach (the franchise has had only two others since then), the Steelers face the rare reality of being irrelevant in their home city.

In recent years, the Pirates had been the local oddity. With the Steelers and Penguins consistently contending, folks in Pittsburgh tolerated the long-struggling Pirates, often viewing their games as simply part of the ambiance at one of the best stadiums in any sport.

But now that the Pirates are back to the postseason for the first time since Bill Cowher’s first year as Steelers coach and have won the wild-card game against the Reds with a raucous record crowd, the Pirates take center stage during the Steelers’ bye week.

It culminates, coincidentally, on Sunday in Pittsburgh, when Game Three of the best-of-five with the Cardinals will be played at PNC Park. If the Pirates can win the first two games in St. Louis, it could end up being the biggest non-Steelers Sunday in Pittsburgh since May 26, 1991, when the city welcomed the Penguins back to town after winning their first Stanley Cup in Minnesota.

The Steelers have now returned from London after losing to Minnesota in a rematch of the first Super Bowl the Steelers ever won. This time, the Steelers lost, plunging to 0-4.

The situation surely is contributing to the pressure the Steelers are facing, even as they try to downplay it. Owner Art Rooney II, who is dealing with first real crisis of his tenure as the man in charge of the team, declined a request to be interviewed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Instead, Rooney issued a statement through the team.

“In a football season you can’t worry about your last game, or your last four games,” Rooney said. “The team has to focus on the next opponent and do what is necessary to improve each week of the season. If we continue to work hard and play with intensity, good things will come.”

Plenty of folks in Pittsburgh don’t believe it. Even more troubling is the reality that plenty of folks in Pittsburgh currently don’t care.

So the Pirates finally make a post-season in the MLB.. after a loooooooong barren run of outs.. (pun intended).. bandwagon city :p

But really, dropping game #1 vs one of the POWER HOUSE Baseball teams isn't a surprise... 9-1 slapping... however a 7-1 stunning win in Game 2 is the eye opener!! The fifth game will be played in St Louis mind you.. Good on the hardcore Pirate fans who have been rewarded but I'm still not SOLD that the Steelers are irrelevant just yet. I like what Rooney stated.. not to panic and realise that 'good teams rebound in the face of adversity' (seriously don't think we're playing all that bad as the 0-4 record says.. just turnover issue that can be anomaly). 4-4 record after week 9 is very much a big chance IMHO.

What happens if a city is so crappy that everyone leaves that city yet continues to root for the same awful team even after they've left?

You have the Pittsburgh Steelers fan base.

Steelers fans are everywhere. Not because their fan base is so large, but because the city of Pittsburgh is such a dump that if these fans had stayed in Pittsburgh they'd all be unemployed, homeless, and using their terrible towels to help stay warm while sleeping on top of a street vent.

Steeler Nation?

Please.

That isn't a nation, it's just a collection of people who didn't want to be homeless and decided to move to your city instead of staying in Pittsburgh and freezing to death.

So now that the 2014 Draft is done & dusted..

Let's delve into what Colbert and the Rooney's did:

IMMEDIATE NEEDS: CB : OLB : DL : WR

R 1 pick: Ryan Shazier OLB Ohio State

ohio-st-ryan-shazier-010514.jpg

Fills the void left by LaMarr Woodley and somewhat James Harrison from 12 months ago with some urgently needed Pass rush.
Is noted to be exceptionally quick and can be flexible to play both Strong Safety position along with stuffing the run. Liking this pick exceptionally because he is a playmaker rather than a stay at home shutdown defender like Dennard who most Steeler fans highly anticipated in being the pick at #15. Colbert wasn't buying into that 'tunnel vision philosophy' and took the player the Dallas Cowboys were right on the cusp of selecting with pick #16. Will wear #50.

Elephant stamp. :thumbsu:

R2 pick: Stephon Tuitt DT/DE Notre Dame

stephon-tuitt-msu.jpg

Got off to a slow start in 2013 after offseason surgery for a sports hernia, but had 49 tackles and 7.5 sacks and finishes his career with 126 tackles and 21.5 sacks, leaving him tied for third on Notre Dame's sack list. A surprise injury which the medical staffs found at the NFL Combine meaning he didn't participate as he rehabs from left foot surgery but is noted to be rather nimble yet tough for such a massive 6' 5" stature. Sound character may have won him over with the Steelers front office.

Blue collar worker who will hopefully stay healthy which is my only concern here.

R3 pick: Dri Archer RB/KR Kent State

1020_FOOTBALLHOME_BS010_INSIDE.JPG

A small framed Speed demon who will offer a change of pace in the backfield along with KR duties on special teams. Clocked a 4.16-second 40-yard dash in 18 steps on one official handheld combine watch, tying Calvin Johnson’s NFL Scouting Combine record for fewest steps. Will need to stay healthy as he injured his ankle last season.

Speed is all that matters here. Will need to be utilised correctly/ all about timing otherwise wasted pick as small framed bodies don't last long in this league. X Factor if he can break past the open lines and find daylight.

Glitter wish pick. :p

R4 pick: Martavis Bryant WR Clemson

hi-res-f7533bc7dbe049bb0f363b0a30fa8bb9_crop_exact.jpg

Played opposite Sammy Watkins (Bills pick 4) with Clemson. Superb body length with a long, rangy frame (6' 4"). Very good straight-line, separation speed being amongst the fastest in the WR class. Can drop his hips surprisingly well for as tall as he is and is fairly shifty after the catch. Good red-zone target -- effective making back-shoulder catches. Flashes the ability to climb the ladder and highpoint the ball. Has return experience.

Outstanding specimen with the ideal size and quite thrilled to see him available mid fourth round.

Elephant stamp pick. :thumbsu:

R5 A pick: Shaquille Richardson CB Arizona

L169_CIFR23d73032c27f808f93c0733cec4d5eae.jpg

Outstanding pro day workout, posting a 4.43-second 40, 38 1/2-inch vertical jump and 6.95-second three-cone drill time, indicating good speed, agility and explosion. Needs to be better against the run and reading the WR's movements in open field. But after watching his highlight reel, can clearly develop better as a strong safety as he possess an aggressive style of punishing his targets.

Project player selection at this stage but may work well in nickel situations to give starters a breather.

R5 B pick: Wesley Johnson OT from Vanderbilt

0ap2000000277470.jpg

Durable, versatile 51-game starter who has experience playing all across the line. Highly respected, passionate, no-nonsense vocal leader.
Depth player with leadership qualities should fit in nicely. May end up having a 10 year career as rotation opportunities are common in da 'Burgh.

Solid pick if he hangs around long enough to eventually evolve into a starter.

Pick 6 A Jordan Zumwalt ILB UCLA

zumwalt.jpeg

High-energy overachiever with a special-teams temperament. Stands out most for his competitiveness, effort, versatility and swagger. Brings the feisty type of attitude desired on a Jeff Fisher or Jim Schwartz defense. Will factor immediately on special teams and could work his way into a starting lineup.

As the picture depicts.. will know he has everything to lose if tackling technique lets him down. Special teams contributor at this stage.

Pick 6 B Daniel McCullers DT Tennessee

7764774.jpg

Big boned, short area plugger… rare size with vines for arms, an enormous wingspan and exceptional mass to occupy space and hold up multiple blockers -- has clear two-gap potential. Looks every bit the part with a relatively lean build for a 350-pounder -- carries his weight well with some muscle definition and good overall body thickness. Can overpower zone blockers with sheer size. Very durable and has not missed any games to injury throughout his career.

Will be quite influential in pass rush situations. Plenty to like about a powerful boulder on the D line.

R7 Pick Rob Branchflower TE Massachusetts

10502329275_25aede8179_b.jpg

Even though he possesses an average athletic ability he has outstanding size. Competitive run blocker -- drives his legs and works to finish. Tough. Functional pass protector. Lays out for the ball and will sell out his body to make difficult catches. Good career production -- exits school as career receiving leader for a tight end. Smart. Solid special-teams temperament. Respected leader and two-time team captain. Four-year starter.

Colbert has channelled maturity above everything else to allow this rookie to establish himself in the NFL over time.

Will be interesting to see the plan they have for Dri Archer going forward, I think I may have read he slotted into the receiving corps at times too? And had to double check that Martavis Bryant was 6'4" and not 5'4", hallelujah a 6ft+ receiver!! Pretty excited to see what that front 7 can do with the ins we got, hopefully the additions to the pass rush can help out the aging & young secondary we have.
