Plibersek - Opposition arse clown

1) Scott Morrison should be given an extension to his portfolio by implementing measures to contain the Ebola virus. His advice on TV today was very sound, saying that all incomers from Africa should be isolated and quarantined, which sounds good to me. Do you realise how devastating it would be if Australia was hit with an Ebola epidemic? It just needs one or two undiagnosed people with Ebola infecting those around them with the disease, to make its spread inevitable. Historically the outbreak of viral diseases have been traced back to one event, such as an infected ship’s arrival or one ill person, precipitating plagues that resulted in thousands of deaths.

2) Was offered a lucrative job in Guinea earlier this year (based out of London). I agonised over the offer for perhaps 1 second before refusing, there isn't a dollar amount printed that would get me there (and this was pre-Ebola)
So are you saying quarantine anyone from anywhere in Africa?

This is the same Scott Morrison who LITERALLY BELIEVES IN:

a.) The ability of his pastor to channel the "power of God" to enable a "faith healing".

b.) Speaks in tongues and believes that this is an expression of the "holy spirit" working through him

c.) Miracles

d.) Angels

e.) all sorts of other weird, evangelical bullshit

THAT Scott Morrison??

Zero surprise there as you are so obviously frightened of anything, or anyone, different.

Just for you...here is the experience from someone who actually knows the area better than your mate Scott and obviously better than you...

Yep, one of the leading causes attributable to the rapid spread of HIV was truck drivers and itinerant workers.

My direct experiences in Africa (living, working for several years and on many other business trips at various times over the last few decades) is predominantly eastern and southern Africa, though I spent many years as an expat-kid growing up in west Africa (mainly in Monrovia, Liberia pre civil war). China (and others) have made significant investments (infrastructure roads etc as well as some "ego" constructions for some governments (stadiums etc)) in return for certain mineral and other rights. Have seen so many major road constructions (increasingly in recent times) and with the massive increase in transportation vehicles, times are changing significantly from the majority travel by foot and bike.

One thing that really perplexes me about the current Ebola situation in West Africa is we know very VERY little about the situation in the direct neighboring countries (Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkino Faso, Ghana and others adjacent), as though they are immune to it and it does not exist - I can only presume we are not getting full facts. There are significant ebola numbers experienced near some of these borders, and it is coming to the end of certain growing seasons. In West Africa there are significant movements of people (itinerant workers) between countries and it IS impossible to lock down borders (borders are meaningless to much trade, movement and culture - many borders are meaningless and purely a result of colonialism). The Sierra Leone numbers also make little sense when you look at deaths and infections elsewhere - but they did have lockdowns and perhaps their medical actions, knowledge and also general health of those infected may have significantly improved their numbers. People with better immune systems and that keep hydrated well have a greater recovery rate.

Looking at the statistics and daily growth rates in the Wiki page (data from WHO) it appears the last 3 weeks have started to turn the situation a little - there is hope we are starting to make progress in the infection rates.

Quarantine that!!

Whenever I see Tanya Plibersek on TV she looks so sad and I want to tell her to get out of politics and be a home mum for a few years. Heard Lisa Wilkinson recently say that at the peak of her career in magazine publishing she realised that it was time to have a break and do the “home” thing. Tanya should talk to Lisa.

The best way to stop a disease is to get it early where ever it is. Dont confuse 'outbreak' with 'spread' of a disease. You may think it sound to seal the borders but the economic damage from not stopping it in the initial stages could be massive. Let alone if it does spread to us 'smart clean whiteys'.
Imagine if our next bird flu outbreak from China gets hold & becomes a pandemic, so we just close out borders?. Look at the damage & cost of that.
Sorry, but it is just one planet. We cannot just isolate ourselves. It aint that simple. Not like some people seem to be.

I just had a horrible thought. A future glimpse of what it would be like to have Plibersek as either a opposition leader or (horror) PM. Tanya with her partner flies overseas and like any entrant, fills in the entry visa which asks the very simple question: Have you ever been convicted on any drug trafficking charges? Her husband would have to answer “yes” and subsequently he will be put on the first plane back to Australia, embarrassing us over and over and over. Diplomacy ALP style

Classic was her was telling pensioners in NSW, that they should support the then ALP's governments Carbon Tax, because if they didnt their homes would be flooded from rising sea levels. Those pensioners were actually living about 200km from the coast and when Ray Hadley called her on it, or maybe it was Alan Jones, she denied she was doing it and that it was nothing but a smear campaign by right wing radio shock jocks. That is ofcourse until the transcript from the public forum was pulled out, it was at that point Plibersek went totally silent and hung up the phone.

You are so enlightened xeey. Carry on.
Anyway the funny thing is Tone would get straight into any country-go figure-if only we could stop him getting out of Australia and making a tots goose of himself in front of everyone. What about how he feels like Steven Harper is almost his bruvva? Tone -you aren't at a barbie old chap. Lift your game.;)

Well you haven't provided a link but it sounds like she may have been taken out of context.
Jones and Hadley lol

Labor's foreign affairs spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek is also concerned that Australia has not yet acted on formal requests for practical help.

"I think it's very significant that we've had the prime minister of the United Kingdom and the president of the United States make formal requests of our Government for extra Australian commitment to fight Ebola in West Africa, and those requests haven't been met," she told ABC News.

Way to look like a goose Tone.

Those countries have asked for help, but they haven't offered to help treat any Australians who become infected.

That has always been the sticking point, as I understand it.

Chocked on my coffee when I heard him say that, how many times has he met him 4,5, 6?

Just how hard are we trying for this though?

For a country that now proclaims to "stand up to Putin's Russia (LOL)" and has a place on the Security Council, we seem to be finding it awfully difficult to secure a possible hospital bed or two in Europe.

Don't forget that we are also looking for a place on the Human Rights Council. Bit of a joke I think.

I can't imagine that it would be easy for countries to sell to their voters.

Sending off people to help? Great.

Bringing them back with Ebola? Not so great, and will provoke anxiety, but at least it can be sold as a patriotic and responsible duty.

Bringing in infected people of other nations? Why should we, the ill-informed voters, be at risk for them? Why can't country X do it instead? And, on the flip-side, if you take Australia's nationals, why won't you take such-and-such nationals?

There's a reason Germany back-flipped on their offer to treat any international aid workers.

I can see your point and recognise that you have been all over this outbreak since before it became newsworthy.

What excuse has the UK given for not aiding us in this capacity? They seem the logical destination.

Would it really? Given that it isn't transmissible before people become symptomatic, and that it is people with late-stage cases who are the most infectious (ie. those who ain't going to be wandering around), it's hard to imagine it being "devastating" in a country which doesn't have pitifully weak healthcare systems and cultural practices which involve hand-washing corpses.

We've seen Nigeria and Senegal contain it, we've seen the quite ill Sawyer hop on a plane and infect zero people on the plane and airport, and we've seen the symptomatic Duncan spend several days with his family without infecting any of them.

The people at risk are those caring for patients, particularly those in late stages. In West Africa, that's mostly family members. Here, that's doctors and nurses, in a situation where people are going to be alert for any symptoms (with more than a dozen suspected cases already dealt with).

Doesn't really point to devastating spread.

Good question. Unfortunately whatever negotiations have taken place have been kept private; the only public comment on them has been from Australia, and that's merely to the extent that they have been happening.

It may be that they are simply preserving their capacity for their own personnel. They have a fairly sizable contingent over there already, and they have just one specialised unit for dealing with such patients, which has already been used to treat one British nurse.

See, this is where stuff doesn't add up for me.

Say, for example, we had an epidemic of a new contagion in SE Asia, that required a similar global response from capable nations.

It stands to reason that Australia would be the destination point for any potential, high level emergency evacuation procedures needed for foreign personnel working in the area.

This is far from an unrealistic scenario.

Something stinks, and it seems very much like paranoia from an ill-informed government for mine.
